Two men were arrested on Tuesday for the robbery and attack on three fishermen, including former Springbok Gerrie Sonnekus, in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape police said.

“After following leads, Port Alfred detectives in collaboration with crime intelligence officers, arrested two men aged 34 in Nemato Township in the early hours of Tuesday morning,” police spokesperson Luvuyo Mjekula said.

“Police are looking to make more arrests as two more suspects are still at large.”

At 22:00 on Saturday night, four men entered the holiday home in Anglers Way through a sliding door.

They allegedly tied up Sonnekus, 61, Bernadus Lambertus Zaaiman, 63, and Andre Cleghorn, 60, and attacked them before fleeing with cellphones, alcohol, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The victims sustained physical injuries, including stab wounds,” said Mjekula.

Sonnekus and Zaaiman were taken to hospital but have been discharged, he said.

Free State native Sonnekus played 3 Tests for the Springboks (two at No 8 and one at scrumhalf) between 1974 and 1984, scoring one try.

I read about this elsewhere on the net yesterday, and whilst one has to have sympathy, one must also realise that the only reason this incident even made it onto any media forum is because of who was involved.

As a nation we have become desentsitised to crime, and even when it happens close to home it’s just another statistic.

    Unfortunate, but a fact.

Ek verwag dat dinge nog erger word.

Ek wil nie eers daar oor praat nie.

Genoeg misdaad and familie moorde gehad.

Beskerm wat jy het met enige bronne tot jou beskikking.

Dit is nie snaaks om n familie lid vermoor in hulle eie bed te kry.

Change coming on land reform – minister
    2014-06-24 22:31

Cape Town – Blacks had been “bending over backwards” on land reform and restitution, but no longer, Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti said on Tuesday.

“It is unsustainable. We cannot go on like this,” he told MPs in the National Assembly.

Nkwinti recently tabled land reform proposals which, if enacted, would see farmers giving half their land to their workers
