Deon Stegmann

Deon Stegmann

BullsDeon Stegmann may make his long-awaited return to action when the Vodacom Bulls head for Windhoek for a friendly match against the Namibian national team this weekend.

While Stegmann was only expected to make a return to Currie Cup action later, his inclusion in a team for the breakaway trip may well mean that he will get some game time. It also means he could be back for the last few games in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby series.

The Bulls have not named a captain but the logical candidate is Akona Ndungane. He has served as the vice-captain for two seasons now and any other candidate will raise eyebrows if Ndungane isn’t given the job.

Without their Springbok and SA Under 20 representatives, there is still a lot of talent. Springboks Piet van Zyl, Bjorn Basson, Akona Ndungane, Bandise Maku and Werner Kruger are all in the touring squad.

Rising stars such as Jacques du Plessis, Marvin Orie, Bongi Mbonambi and Paul Willemse are also there while William Small-Smith may get a full run at outside centre.

Tuks’ Roelof Smit, a classic opensider, is also in the team and it will be interesting to follow his progress on the trip.

Interestingly the Bulls are really enjoying this breakaway. Head coach Frans Ludeke heads up a big 16 man management team along with the 28 players as one of four specialist coaches.

Bulls Touring team:

Backs: Akona Ndungane, Bjorn Basson, Burger Odendaal, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Jurgen Visser, Piet van Zyl, Rudy Paige, Ryan Nell, Sampie Mastriet, Travis Ismaiel, Ulrich Beyers, William Small-Smith.

Forwards: Bandise Maku, Basil Short, Bongi Mbonambi, Christiaan de Bruin, Clayde Davids, Dean Greyling, Deon Stegmann, Grant Hattingh, Jacques du Plessis, Jacques Engelbrecht, Jono Ross, Marvin Orie, Morné Mellet, Paul Willemse, Roelof Smit, Werner Kruger.

Good to see Deon Stegmann back in the squad, and good to see Marvin Orie there too from the little I saw of Orie he looked like he had a lot of potential, although it was Varsity Cup so it will be great to see hims step up at the higher levels.

A bit odd though that there is this game on Saturday against Namibia and Bulls game on Friday night against EP Kings. With so many players with the U20s in New Zealand and some with the Boks, nevermind the injured ones, surely this is stretching the resources to far.

Priority must have been given to the game against Namibia if you see the squad that is going to PE:

Backs: Jacques Rossouw, Kefense Mahlo, Jade Stigling, Leighton van Wyk, Marquite September, Kobus Marais, Carlo Engelbrecht (o/k), Andrè Warner, Joshua Stander, Ganfried May.

Forwards: Ruan Steenkamp (c), Corne Cooper, Chris Massyn, Irne Herbst, Schalk van Heerden, Neetling Fouchè, Jan Enslin, Justin Forwood, Sidney Tobias, Andrew Beerwinkel, Johan Bannink, Jason Jenkins, Carel Swart.

Yeah, virtually an unknown C or D side to play against the EP Kings, so one can take no value whatsoever out of a result in that game.

Strong looking squad going to Namibia though… and good to see Stegmann is on the mend.
