    @ robzim:
    how many have they produced in the last 20 years?

  • 242

    @ MacroBull:

    Gunther used to call Bishops called the “Eton lite” 🙂

  • 243

    @ MacroBull:

    I will have to google it but certainly not as many as they used to… last one’s I can remember on the top of my head were Robbie Fleck, Peter Whipp… I think Dave van Doesselin ( spelling) also went there..

    @ robzim:
    the thing about cape town is that at least you can still be seen at a “lesser” school, Grey College and Paul roos produced more springboks but they fees are much more affordable, especially grey, there is a bigger net.

    The whole arguement in Natal is that the net only gets cast on these “elite” schools, if you are not in there you have almost no chance, unless you are truly exceptional, or a development player, but usually they work those guys into these elite schools with bursaries that they spot in primary school.

  • 245

    @ robzim:
    So they have produces many boks of which nearly half came before 1906, where most people could not afford to send their kids to school even.

  • 246

    Thats why Marcel Coetzee’s story is so remarkable.

  • 247

    Then again Maercel could have been on the radar, but they had to make room for someone with “connections”

  • 248

    @ MacroBull:

    I forgot about Francois Louw and Selborne Boome.

    Nizaan Carr might soon become a bok too.

    Daniel Vickerman went to play for Aus

    Nic Koster could have become a great player if it was not for injuries while the jury is still out on Swiel etc..

    Bishops have a different rugby philosophy to Schools like Paarl Gym, Paul Roos etc in the sense that they play a certain brand of attacking rugby at all costs… as a result they often come short against teams who play more “clinical” and have had less success on the scoreboard since rugby became more professional ( even at schoos level).

    @ robzim:
    percy went to SACS riight?

  • 250

    @ MacroBull:

    Yip… all the way from Walvis Bay to SACS… Peter Kirsten also went there, but Gary went to Rondebosch.

  • 251

    @MB
    In 2011 Sarel Cilliers drew with Maritzburg 20-20.
    @Rob
    Many more players not on that list that made Springbok team that went to normal schools

  • 252

    I don’t count SACS, Bishops, Gimmies, Boys High etc as such fancy schools.
    We knew, in our days that the Southern suburb schools players would make the WP Craven Week side, it was a given.
    It’s only been these last few years that the players from the Northern suburbs started making it into WP.
    That was just the way it was

  • 253

    @ nortierd:
    Exactly, at least other people get a change or at least a shot at making the craven week team.

  • 254

    gosh hockeyball into the face on SS4

  • 255

    I still rate Hershell Gibbs as the best schoolboy 10 I have ever watched live. Pity he chose cricket, jeez, he was good as a kid rugby player.

  • 256

    @ nortierd:

    I don’t think its really Northern suburbs schools but mainly Paarl and Sbosch schools.

    The only two players from Northern suburbs schools who I am aware of that went right to the top are Eben Etsebeth ( Tygerberg) and Werner Greef ( DF Malan).

    Damian de Allende ( Milnerton) might soon follow. although he never played craven week like Eben and Werner did.

    Herch was untouchable as a flyhalf… even better than Peter Kirsten.

  • 258

    George North is so strong

  • 259

    @ robzim:
    what about PSDT, Aplon, JDJ

  • 260

    @Rob
    You are forgetting about the new breed of players like Cheslin and the guys from the Parow/Bellville South area.
    They are coming through now, and are getting opportunities and taking it.

  • 261

    @ nortierd:
    Nortie, but to be brutally honest, in the past these players would never have got a look in for obvious reasons.

  • 262

    @Rob
    Let me rephrase, I’m referring to WP seniors as well.
    Most of these kids might not make Craven Week

  • 263

    Lets just say white players not in those schools wont get somewhere easily, unless they are beasts like Eben

    Yes, but not just for the obvious reasons, we never got a look in either, because we were from Northern Suburb schools.
    If you didn’t attend Bishops, Sacs, Wynberg, Paarl Gim or Paarl Boys High you could forget it.
    We from JJ Du Preez, Tygerberg, President, Durbanville ( they were still new then ) and other schools from the Bellville, Parow area weren’t even looked at.
    It was just the way it was

  • 265

    Yes, Cheslin is northern suburbs, I forgot about him

    PSDT, Aplon and du Jongh are country boys ( Wellington, Hawston, Moorreesburg) and not Northern suburbs.

    Bolla Conradie ( Bellville South) was also northern suburbs….

  • 266

    Alex Goode is having a very tidy game at full back in this final so far

  • 267

    I see Brendan Venter next to the field, so he is still involved with Sarries?

  • 268

    @ nortierd:

    Yes, very much so…still in the same position than before… only difference is that he does most of the analyzing etc in the Strand and not in London..

  • 269

    @267
    Amazing man, manages to run a medical practice, get the Sharks a CC trophy and assists at Sarries, all during the same time.
    Talk about multi tasking

    I remember Gibbs at the Cravens final against Boland in Bloemfontein, he was absolutely brilliant! He played against Gaffie that day and WP narrowly won, if memory serves.

    But so was Kirsten…saw him against Natal for WP at Newlands and then again for the Kwaggas vs Lions at Ellis, Park, and on both occasions he was the play make/destroyer, he reminded me a bit of the French flyhalf Guy Camberabero.
    If it wasn’t for Ian Gourly ( that infamous Natal ref of the 80s) awarding the Lions a dubious penalty in injury time, the Kwaggas would have won, think they lost something like 22-23….
    Sadly Jan Ellis ended Kirsten’s rugby career by busting his knee with his huge orange Adidas boot (WP vs Tvl).
    Disapproval
