Victor MatfieldSchalk BurgerCornal HendricksSibusiso SitholeLodewyk De JagerTeboho MahojeHeinrich BrussowSouth AfricaWorld champion Springboks Victor Matfield and Schalk Burger as well as two former Blitzbok stars, Cornal Hendricks and S’bura Sithole, are included in a 36-man squad to attend a national training camp in Durban from 25 to 28 May, the South African Rugby Union announced on Monday.

Cell C Sharks back Sithole and Hendricks, the SA Sevens Player of the Year in 2013, are two of eight uncapped players in the squad. The others are the Toyota Cheetahs duo of Lood de Jager (lock) and Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje (loose forward); Marcel van der Merwe (prop) and Jacques du Plessis (flank/lock) of the Vodacom Bulls; Marnitz Boshoff (flyhalf) of the Lions and the DHL Stormers’ Damian De Allende (centre/wing).

They will join Matfield, Burger and Toyota Cheetahs flanker Heinrich Brüssow – who are back in the national set up for the first time since the last Rugby World Cup in 2011 – in a training squad that is missing a number of players due to injury.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said he was happy with the form of a number of the country’s top players and the uncapped players who have grabbed their chance this season, as well as the re-appearance from retirement and long-term injury of Matfield and Burger.

“Victor and Schalk have been out of rugby for a long time. They’ve really been in great form recently and the fact that they have not been with the Boks for more than two years, has made them hungry for Test rugby yet again,” said Meyer.

“It’s great to welcome them back into the Springbok fold and I know both of them can still add a lot of value to the team with the Rugby World Cup in 2015 looming.

“I’m also looking forward to working with Heinrich for the first time. He’s been playing very well for the Toyota Cheetahs since returning from injury and brings a lot of experience.

“However, the message to every player in this training squad is clear – everyone must accelerate in each area from the first moment we are together as a team and that inclusion in this squad is no guarantee of selection.”

Meyer said that injuries had been a concern but they had allowed other players to press their claims. A number of players in the squad are still nursing niggles or recently returned from long-term injuries.

“It looks like most of the guys are improving weekly and a few new players have put up their hands, which is good to see with the first match of the season, against the World XV in Cape Town, only a few weeks away.” said Meyer.

“It’s also very encouraging to see a bunch of new players emerging from Vodacom Super Rugby. This camp will provide us with a great opportunity to work with these players before the squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series is finalised. I am looking forward to work with these players for the first time.

“This is a very big year for us and the players know they will have to step up a gear, be sharp and focused from the moment we get going in Durban. We have 14 very challenging matches ahead in 2014 and it’s imperative that we build on what was a good season last year.

“It’s important that we start building continuity because there are just 18 matches left until the Rugby World Cup starts. But it’s just as important to recognise continuous good form. We also have a number of players struggling with injury niggles or returning from injury which we have to assess.”

Players based in France, England and Ireland were not considered for this camp as most of them are still playing for their respective clubs.

However, the experienced Fourie du Preez, who played for the Springboks in 2013, has been invited to the camp in Durban as he is available for the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Wales and Scotland as well as against the Samsung-sponsored World XV.

The players invited to the training camp will assemble in Durban on Sunday morning and will return to their franchises on Wednesday morning.

“We have a good working relationship with our local franchises and we have to thank them, as well as Suntory in Japan, for allowing their players to attend this camp,” said Meyer.

Players who were involved with the Springboks last year, but were not considered for selection because of medium to long-term injuries, are Scarra Ntubeni (foot), Chiliboy Ralepelle (knee), Frik Kirsten (neck), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee), Franco van der Merwe (ankle), Arno Botha (knee), Pierre Spies (bicep), Louis Schreuder (hand), Pat Lambie (bicep), Gio Aplon (elbow) and Jaque Fourie, who could potentially miss the entire Test season because of an ankle injury.

I can’t fault Heyneke Meyer’s selections, apart from Johan Goosen & Teboho Mahoje perhaps.

Phillip van der Walt & Lappies Labuschagne probably unlucky not to be in place of Mahoje and personally I need more than 1 good game of Johan Goosen for him to be included.

No overseas Bokke except Fourie du Preez included… and I can fully appreciate it…. but we are thin at flyhalf…

  • 2

Well done to the uncapped players! Well done to Meyer for giving Brüssow at least a shot at playing in green and gold again.

  • 3

    @ grootblousmile:
Agreed on Goosen. Used to be a fan, but he has done nothing this year to be selected. He is not even the best flyhalf at the Cheetahs.

  • 4

    3 @ kaksioek:
Yeah, I think Elgar Watts has been better at the Cheetahs than Johan Goosen.

I do not doubt Goosen’s potential, I doubt his form and propensity for injury at present.

  • 5

In a struggling Stormers side, I think Damian de Allende has done well and deserves his call-up.

  • 6

I think once the european players end their commitments, the squad could swell to 45. So many of these players will miss out, likely about 15 of them.

That said It is an exciting squad and these players will know they are on the raidar, so there will be communication with them on what is expected from each player if they want to be part of the springboks.

Give them a rest Heyneke! Lets see what these guys have.

Couldn’t agree more. The lad has potential.

    Fokol talent there?

  • 12

There will always be unlucky players, I feel bad for Whitely and Rayno Benjamin, can’t help but consider that Deysels name was also penciled in.

  • 13

    10 @ Scrumdown:
Strong bugger, good hands and good vision… versatile!

    and Japan

Serfontein and Engelbrecht didn’t do too much to warrent inclusion. Awful lot of centres in the mix. When it will be cut down, I suspect de Villiers and Steyn will be first choice and based on current form, de Allende and Sithole with de Jongh then the back ups?

  • 16

    12 @ MacroBull:
Yip, Benjamin has been good at No 12.

Think the depth is good all over, except at flyhalf.

He doesn’t fit the mould of the big bruising bash it up 8 that HM likes.

His skills lay in other areas.

He just messes a few tries a game because he don’t like to pass.

Problem with strong players, they try and break through every tackle and don’t let the ball do the work

  • 19

2 scrummies and 2 flyhalves. No Sias also? Would have included Jacques Potgieter as well – he is playing some blinders for the Waratahs.

  • 20

Mapoe looked good this season as well imo.

    Agree on Potgieter.

  • 22

Deysel moes ook daar gewees het, hy het die beste AFTRAP van al die spelers in aksie die naweek. 😀

  • 23

    @ Scrumdown:
Meyer has selected Keegan in the past? I think even Kanko has been in the mix? @ Blue Traveller:
Serfontein will come right, JJ is lucky but so is players like JPPietersen, this is an extremely wide stretching squad, and I am sure they want to assess everyone who started recently. Except Piet an Zyl haha

  • 24

Sorry Kanko last played in 2009

  • 25

Good to see Schalk, Vic and Heinrich back in the mix… all playing good rugby…

Please for Cornal Hendricks… he is so much of a better player than Rhule… I can’t understand why he plays second fiddle in Naka se Orkes… Elgar Watts too… although Goosen had a good game on Saturday… most of the Cheetahs better performances have come with Elgar playing…
I also like Oupa Mohoje… he’s a very intelligent kid… and really engages the refs well… possible future Cheetahs captaincy in line for him…?

And really great to see Damien there too… his call up is so well deserved… been the stand out Stormer all season IMO… and the stand out 12 in SA… IMO… although I’m sure many won’t agree… Hehehe

And a big well-done to Heyneke too… he has obviously rewarded good form in SuperRugby… and what more can we ask for…

But Heyneke… please please please… This is the year to slay the Kiwi…!!! This losing to them is getting so old already…!! 😆

  • 26

As players gets older they are more prone to injuries and consitent form is not always a given.

Will HM risk grooming youngsters like PSDT, Paul Willemse, Kolisi, Marcell Coetsee, Arno Botha, Jacques Du Plessis etc for Schalk and Vic in the RWC next year.

Didn’t work for the Aussies in 1995 and definitely not for the Boks in 2011. England was an exception to the rule though in 2007

  • 27

Talking about missing squad members… I think Paul Willemse, Bulls lock, is unlucky not to be in the training squad!

  • 28

Last year Goosen was going to slay the Ab’s on his own, now your fans are dumping him. That squad isn’t good enough to beat the Ab’s, more pain for Meyer this year it’ll be 0 from 6.

  • 29

    28 @ NZINCHINA:
Is that confidence OR arrogance speaking?

Reads a lot like arrogance to me!

  • 30

    @ grootblousmile:

We leave the arrogance for KEO, you are weak at ten and have been for years. When the game opens up you won’t be able to live with the Barretts, Saveas, Ben Smiths’s etc The Bokke will be very pyhsical for most of the game but don’t have the conditioning or skill level to go for the full 80 minutes against Hansens men, he knows that and prepares accordingly.
