HSBC Sevens World SeriesThe final round of this season’s HSBC Sevens World Series took place in London. The London leg of the series took place during Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 of May.

Before this tournament New Zealand topped the World Series table and were hot favourites to add yet another trophy to their sevens cabinet, which they comfortably did by winning this leg of the HSBS Sevens World Series in Londom too.

Prior to the tournament they were already 19 points ahead of their nearest rivals, South Africa, on the overall standings table.

New Zealand, South Africa and Fiji notched up big wins in their first games on Day 1 against Argentina, Portugal and Spain respectively.  South Africa then remained unbeaten through Day 1 while Fiji lost one game, to Australia and New Zealand also lost one game, being narrowly defeated in the final game of Day 1 by England.  All three these teams competed in the quarter finals of the Cup section on Day 2 where they were joined by England, Australia, Samoa, Kenya and France.

The BlitzBokke’s ‘reward’ for topping their pool is a Cup quarter final against New Zealand, but New Zealand comfortably dispatched the Blitzbokke by 32 / 5 in their quarter final.

The Results were periodically updated here on Rugby-Talk.

    @ nortierd:

lol, I don’t follow it are there plenty of SAFFA’s on show for the final?

  • 73

    72 @ NZINCHINA:
Its Toulon v Saffacens (Saracens 🙂 ) so plenty of South African’s will be playing there, just shows what good quality players SA produces Star Struck just a pity some of them not in line to play for the Boks anymore

  • 74

I see Castres ended Clermont’s home winning streak of 77 matches at home… That is unbelievable.

  • 75

The winning streak at home stretches 8 years back, and comes as the coach is leaing to club to go help Scotland.

    75 @ MacroBull:
Hi MacroBull yes that was an amazing record, Vern Cotter has done really well with Clermont so look forward to see what he can do as Scotland coach. With Clermont now out of TOP14 and also out of Heineken Cup he can probably focus on the his Scotland job a few weeks earlier than he would have if they were in the TOP 14 final on 31 May. If they made it to that final then Cotter would have had about a week I think with Scotland before the first tour test. Only thing with Glasgow in the semi-final of the PRO12 this week one hopes we can get to the PRO12 final on 31 May but that will then give the Scotland players from Glasgow less time with the international team – Glasgow should provide a lot of the tour players again. But there is talk this side of there being two touring squads for Scotland this year with some players probably in both, the test against Boks is outside international window so don’t think Scotland players based outside Scotland would be available for that one.

    75 @ MacroBull:
Cotter must be a top coach but the only thing that concerns me is that he won’t be coming over after bowing out on a high with Clermont this season by missing out on TOP14 and Heineken Cup finals but hopefully this won’t be a mind issue that will affect him.

    @ Bullscot:
Mornig Scottie, how are you doing?

Yes he left the club on a low, but as you say, it has more benefits to Sctoland than negatives. How do you mean Scotland will hae two squads? where else would they be going? It must be difficult to financially support two tours and a new coach who likely came at a price. Where are Scotland going in June?

    78 @ Bullscot:
That is an insane squad, it is easy to say we judge our teams past and present on how they fare against the All Blacks, but this team is simply unbelievable compared to the past. We are playing the “world xv” in cape town, but we play the true world x twice this year, home and away.

Politicians on both sides of the Tasman Sea have put aside parochialism this week,
to suggest The Commonwealth of Australia, and The Dominion of NZ, cease to exist for the period leading up to, and for the duration of the Rio Olympics.
    .
And for both to become……………”The Federation of ANZACistan”.
The sole purpose of this “Federation” would be to help ensure a Gold in the Rugby 7’s at Rio.
    .
    .
Immediately after “The Gold”, NZ would sever the arrangement by passing an Act of Parliament, in what would be the NZ Autonomous Regional Assembly.

True this could invoke civil war or some such thing.

But hey…………………………………..it could be worth it.

    😉

still a glaring weakness at hooker, and feel our prop stocks arent great, Crockett? meh, Toomaga Allen might have been a better investment imo but our locking stocks (Tuiputo an exciting prospect), loosies and HB positions have some great depth coming through. Bryn hall another good halfback. Backline is as expected, quality throughout, and good to see Fekitoa there, hope he soaks up as much of Conrads knowledge as he can possibly glean. Hoping Cruden gets a game or two before the series, not sure when he’s back. But would not be unhappy with barrett starting.

cant wait for this series, should be a cracker.
