No 8 Duane Vermeulen will captain the DHL Stormers in their Vodacom Super Rugby, Round Eight encounter against the Waratahs at DHL Newlands on Saturday night (kick-off 19:10).
The DHL Stormers are back at DHL Newlands for the first time since the end of February and Vermeulen will skipper a team showing four changes from last weekend’s five-point defeat in Brisbane.
Regular captain Jean de Villiers will sit out this week with a meniscal cyst, with Damian de Allende starting in his place at inside centre.
Kobus van Wyk will take De Allende’s place in the No 14 jersey, with Jaco Taute starting at fullback in place of the injured Gio Aplon and Michael van der Spuy moving onto the bench, having last featured against the Lions in February.
Up front, meanwhile, the fit-again Ruan Botha (ankle) takes the place of Jurie van Vuuren at No.4 lock in the only change to the pack this week, with Tazz Fuzani (on the bench) the only uncapped member of the DHL Stormers 23.
DHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee told www.iamastormer.com: “Depth is crucial in this competition. Having Juan de Jongh back to full fitness, following his comeback from a pre-season knee injury, means that we can still field a formidable centre combination – with Juan and Damian – in Jean’s absence.
“Jean and other players will benefit from this two-week rest period, with next week being a bye, and more players will be returning after the brief break. Players like Scarra Ntubeni, Pat Cilliers, Schalk Burger and Cheslin Kolbe will all hopefully come into contention for selection (after the bye).”
Coetzee also paid tribute to incoming skipper Duane Vermeulen, who was a consistent performer for the team on their four-match tour of New Zealand and Australia
“It’s scary to think that Duane is just 27 years old, yet he has already played 68 matches for the DHL Stormers and he continues to get better as a player and a leader,” he said.
“Players like Duane are the future of this union and it’s an exciting opportunity for him to lead the team as we look to get back to winning ways now that we’re back at home at DHL Newlands.”
The DHL Stormers and Waratahs have met on eight previous occasions at DHL Newlands, with the Stormers winning five times and the ‘Tahs winning twice. One match has been drawn (in 2008).
Tickets for this weekend can be bought online at TicketPros, or from selected Spar stores or PostNet outlets. Ticket prices start at R50 for standing and R80 for seating.

New captain, new DOR, new outcome?
1 @ Scrumdown:
Just saw who’s playing hooker, so NO, same outcome.
>5 skew line outs, and another bonus point loss methinks.
Also not too sure about Vermeulen’s communication skills with the ref’.
as an aside, I actually rate Jackson as a ref’.
Unfortunately with Deon at 2 we will be fighting an uphill battle on first phase possession.
Newlands will make a difference but will it be enough?

The difference will be that the wind blows Fourie’s throw’s even further away from the “centre line” of the line out.
Oooooo flok, these Stormers certainly do not learn, with Deon Fourie at hooker!
Genade Toetie, did you not see the kakkas last week??

Ja I hear you.
Hard to remain optimistic these days.
Still, I remain a supporter and will back them this weekend.
Re Fourie’s selection;…. when I saw the article, it I thought it’s a (late) April’s fool joke.
When Deon left the field after 70 minutes last Sat he was not only dazed and confused but also mentally broken after having produced the worst display of lineout throwing in the history of superrugby breaking the previous record ( of which he was also the holder) in the process.
Vlok Gert, how can you allow this torture to continue?

Flok Gert, waar’s my perd!
Hahaha

Super attitude.
One that I’ve had to carry with the Lions for more than a decade.
7 @ robzim:
The crowd might help him out who knows. Then like GBS said on another thread Coetzee should have started.
I think like many others Deon’s best and only position is at openside. There he is actually very good.
@ robzim:
Eish ja. More wailing and gnashing of teeth to come this Saturday.

Gert hasn’t felt any of the pain, yet!
Waratahs to take this.
Nama and Robzim and Stormersboy to be out out of their misery.
AC to join jobseekers.
@ gunther:
The Stormers will be boosted at home, the backline won’t matter at all for them as it is a pathetic backline, the only way the Stormers can win is to starve NSW of the ball and hope Folau does not play.

I am now too despondent to respond to any posts re the continued selection of Deon at no 2 🙂
Stormers will have a solid midfield defensively, but out wide, there is a wing playign out of position and a wing that takes 3 seconds to change his running angle.

Fourie at 2 again, seriously? I checked, but there isn’t an appropriate smiley for this selection.

You can… it’s the Display Name which needs to change (after you have changed the Nickname), not the Username…
But beware, to curb the problems Voldy used to have, regarding Nick Stealing and shit… you need my permission to change your Display Name…
I would not have minded, if you had asked me to do it for a while.. would actually have been bloody funny!
Check, ek gaan gou maak of ek Romain Poite is…
@ grootblousmile:
didn’t we do something like that last year with springbok jan something??
Hello Rugby-Talkers,
I am so sorry I did wrong against Bismarck du Plessis and the Springboks.
But the money offer was irresitible!
A good enough team to win but eish… Fourie at hooker.
Maybe replace him in the 2nd half with Coetzee and move him to 6 to play his fetcher role.
