The Lions will be holding thumbs that their winger Courtnall Skosan is cleared to play ahead of their crucial Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Cell C Sharks on Saturday.

Skosan failed a concussion test on Monday and has been sent for further tests, with the medical team deciding on Tuesday whether or not he will play, but coach Johan Ackermann is hoping the nippy wing will be cleared to take his place for the last home game before the Lions go on tour.

Thankfully for the Lions, that seems to be the extent of the injury list, with the good news being that injured players such as Derick Minnie, Coenie van Wyk and Robbie Coetzee can all be considered for action this weekend, and just in time for the tour.

In addition to this, Ackermann will also consider the likes of Anthony Volminck and Alwyn Hollenbach, both who played at Vodacom Cup level this past week.

Volminck is favourite to replace Skosan if he is ruled out, but Coetzee and Minnie could both return to the side, with Coetzee likely to return to the starting line-up.

After Willie Britz’ performance it is unlikely that he will be dropped easily, and Minnie may well return to the bench alongside Van Wyk, the latter who will cover fullback and wing for the Lions.

Ackermann isn’t likely to drop Marnitz Boshoff, even though the flyhalf had a horrid time against the Crusaders.

“No I think if we were going to blame players for a bad game, then there would be half the team that can take the blame. I would never hold it against one or two players,” Ackermann said.

“We evaluate every position and the changes that need to take place will take place.”
