South AfricaGio AplonKeegan DanielJean DeyselCharl McLeodWhen the next 4 Springboks who are due to head overseas to earn their keep in Euro and Yen depart, it will be the first time since the inception of professional rugby that more Springboks will be playing rugby overseas than in South Africa, it was reported on the weekend.

Sport24

The departure of Gio Aplon, Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel and Charl McLeod will bring the total number of Springboks playing overseas to 49.

There are currently 57 players in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby and Vodacom Cup groups who are current or former Springboks.

But this will drop to 48 after this year’s Super Rugby when players like JP Pietersen, Heinrich Brussow, Peter Grant, Ryan Kanowski and Dewald Potgieter return to Japan.

This brings the scorecard to: Overseas Springboks 49 / 48 Home.

Jurie Roux, SA Rugby Union executive head, said overseas markets have been offering attractive pay with low tax to top players in the southern hemisphere since 1996.

Given the absolute cr@p level of skills shown in the 2 local derbies this weekend, we have to ask what is being done to develop the skills levels at Primary Schools level.

A blogger on another website posted this link: http://www.nzrugby.co.nz/small_blacks

As was stated on the “other” website, nowhere on the SARU website is there any indication that there is a unified approach to ANY schoolboy coaching in SA.

Small wonder that more than 20 years after the “unification” of Rugby in SA we are still are still lagging SOOOOOO far behind in terms of individual ball handling skills.

Not to worry though. Brute Force and Ignorance will carry the day I’m sure.

    Sad but true mate.

    @ grootblousmile:
For sure boet, it is only going to get worse as the quota screams grow from the likes of our clown minister of sport.

    I quote a comments seen on Sport24.

“Love the way it mentions all these so called Springboks playing abroad, that haven’t played for the boks for several years. The whole damn forward pack play in SA apart from Louw at flank! Du Preez was chosen ahead of Van Zyl at 9, Morne and Habana play in France, all the rest play of the starting 15 play in SA!”

Some of these Boks have only a few games in Bok colors, some are never going to play again.

If one breaks down the figures it does not look that bad.

“97 Springboks?!?!? How big is the squad? Rather compare active Springboks only and then look at the numbers”

    @Superbul
True, it’s the same when they say the Bulls or Stormers etc have 12 Boks in their team, but of the 12 only 2 or 3 are really active Boks.
