Hi Folks,
I am happy to report that the recent changes to Rugby-Talk (and by that I mean the new design and look and feel as well as the coding in the background and new additions of the website) is performing exceptionally well, in fact much better than expected or anticipated, keeping our use nicely within bounds on the web host server.
From a performance perspective, this has indeed been a massive step up from what we had previously… and the person who did the design certainly knows what he’s doing…. cough, cough, couch… it’s me of course, and I have to beat my own chest sometimes!!
I am a very practical person and most of the design is geared towards accommodating those needs, but at the same time I would be the first to admit that I am not artistically inclined… and I suppose each person has his or her own ideas about what the website should or could look like, so I would even be happy to listen to reason on some elements of the website and / or supply reasons why certain elements appear the way they do.
Consider for a moment that this website already consists of 9 052 Rugby Articles Plus 206 other Web Pages (all still accessible), with 323 866 Comments by subscribers and you will understand the magnitude of the website and the volume of data already stored and generated. In a month or less we will go over 10 Million Page Impressions on the website, that in itself an incredulous figure to comprehend fully!
I am also happy that it appears that ALL of you LIKE the NEW DESIGN and the NEW LOOK & FEEL of the website. Well, let’s put it this way, there has been no complaints.
Kindly tell us if you have also found LOAD SPEEDS better than ever and whether my summary above is indeed correct.
I’d also like some feedback from RECENTLY REGISTERED SUBSCRIBERS, whether Rugby-Talk has given you joy and also given you the rugby news and experience you desire? Have you found Rugby-Talk welcoming and have you settled in nicely at your new rugby home?
Feedback (both ways), I feel is important and one has to keep in good touch with the needs of your readership and the community you have built in the proces.
We strive to be approachable and for Rugby-Talk to be a comfortable place where we enjoy the sport we love so much!
It grinds my gut each time I have to play policeman on the website. Luckily bad behaviour is very rare and I thank each and every one of you, the subscribers, for the manner in which you have approached the website and comments here on Rugby-Talk.
Any suggestions, ideas and any contributions to the contents / news at Rugby-Talk will always be appreciated and welcomed.
Regards,
There ars still little elements I want to change… for instance:
1. The PARAGRAPH SPACING in the COMMENTS
2. COMMENT NUMBER STYLING
3. TABLE STYLING & BACKGROUND
@ grootblousmile:
The layout looks good. Thanks for all the hard work. Know this isn’t easy, but if there could be ONE change, I would have it be that the latest comments appear first. Hoop jy verstaan wat ek bedoel. Instead of running from 1, “down” the screen, the latest commments appear at the “top” of the comments section.
2 @ GoBokkeAndIreland:
That is very easy to achieve… will ponder on it for a while… and ask around what th others think about the idea.
@ grootblousmile:
Cool. When I asked the IT guys here at work to do it for our doc tacking system, they freaked the fuck out! Maar jy weet mos hoe werk staatsamptenare!
2 @ GoBokkeAndIreland:
But then it becomes difficult to follow a whole thread if “arriving late”, and wanting to catch up on the banter that has come to pass.
Or isn’t that important to most people?
@ Scrumdown:
Good point! Personally, I want to see the most recent comments first. Think it’s just personal preferance (or just me being full of shit!) Sure Rudi will apply his mind to this!
6 @ GoBokkeAndIreland:
I’ve asked on the Live Game Article whether the folks minded if we tried it quickly…
@ grootblousmile:
Cool – I’m following that thread. Scrumdown did make a good point – see 5 above.
There you have it, Newer Comments on TOP!
@ GoBokkeAndIreland:
dont you mean 5 beeeeloooow?
8 @ GoBokkeAndIreland:
Having the Newer Comments on TOP, has the consequence that you have to Scroll right back up and then down to comment.. not going to work!!
Normal it is….
@ MacroBull:
Yes, No, Maybe . . . 😉
Grootblou – you have done a fantastic job with your site. Wel gedaan, my maat.
I don’t mean to place a downer on anything, but viewing your site on my Blackberry 10 is cumbersome. I have to scroll through a lot of ads and images to get to the articles. Probably just my useless BlackBerry but that is my struggle.
Lekker naweek, ou grote.
14 @ kwas:
Kwasse,
I need to still develop the MOBILE SITE, have only concentrated on the Regular Site, to Iron out the stuff, get the bugs out the system… ect.
How do they say, Rome was’nt buitl in a Day!
Dankie dat jy my DAARAAN herinner het!
Die werk raak nie klaar nie, die man raak klaar!
Hahaha
@ grootblousmile:
Dankie, ou grote.
Just one suggestion GBS if I may…?
Could you please insert a paragraph space in the comments, the same as you have in the articles?
I know most comments are only 1 or 2 lines… but if someone makes 2 or 3 points… or if previous comments are quoted several times… they all appear as if in one paragraph… and become difficult to differentiate which came from who…
Sorting out the paragraph spacing will make those longer comments much easier to read…
Cheers
17 @ ufo:
Check Comment No 1
18 @ grootblousmile:
Sheesh… 😳
Apologies bud… I put it down to multi-tasking…!!
Although others may put it down… very low down… to IQ…! 😉
19 @ ufo:
No problem, seems we are thinking the same way!
20 @ grootblousmile:
Cool GBS… Indeed…
Outta here for now…
Cheers
