Varsity CupWith the play-offs on the horizon, Round Six of the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International will have a major bearing on which teams make the knock-outs.

The penultimate round of the league phase of the competition has served up some intriguing clashes, and with seven of the eight sides still in the running for the semi-finals there will be no shortage of intensity on Monday night.

The only team without a chance of making the semi-finals is winless FNB Wits who face another major challenge as they travel to Potchefstroom to take on log-leaders FNB NWU-Pukke in the first match to be televised live on SuperSport 1.

NWU-Pukke are coming off consecutive away wins against FNB NMMU and defending champions FNB UP-Tuks, so they will be aiming for a bonus-point victory in front of their home crowd to extend their lead at the top of the standings.

Down in Cape Town the third-placed FNB Ikey Tigers will be looking for their first home win of the season when they look to tame both the fourth-placed FNB UFS-Shimlas and the notorious wind on the Green Mile.

The Ikeys are unbeaten on the road this season but have not had as much success at home, and they will be tested once again by a UFS-Shimlas team that held FNB Maties to a draw in a windy Stellenbosch last week.

Maties have been very erratic this year and find themselves down in sixth position, but well within striking distance of the top four, and they are up against a desperate UJ side who have just one win to show for their efforts this season.

Despite their troubles this year, UJ’s hopes of making the semi-finals are not over so expect them to have a full go in front of their home crowd with their campaign effectively on the line.

UP-Tuks will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season to NWU-Pukke last week when they host the NMMU Madibaz in Pretoria.

The Madibaz find themselves in fifth place after their tough win over Wits last week, and they face another difficult assignment against a UP-Tuks team determined to bounce back from a defeat at home.

In the Varsity Shield FNB Fort Hare will be looking to do a rare season double over two-time champions FNB CUT. The Eastern Cape side handed CUT their first defeat since 2012 earlier this season, so the Ixias will be out for revenge when they meet in Alice.

The bottom two sides in the competition – FNB TUT and FNB UWC – will be looking to make a late charge up the standings when they meet in Pretoria. Peter de Villiers’ UWC edged FNB UKZN last week, and they will be hoping to back that up against a TUT Vikings side that is low on confidence after three consecutive defeats.

Double Varsity Young Guns champions UP-Tuks will be out to extend their remarkable unbeaten record when they host NWU-Pukke in Pretoria. NWU-Pukke won their only previous game against Wits, but face the true test of their play-off credentials from the big UP-Tuks outfit.

Over in Johannesburg it will be a battle between two unbeaten teams when UJ host the Steinhoff Junior Maties in a match that is likely to decide who finishes top of their pool.

There are three matches to look forward to in the Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships as competition heats up ahead of the play-off stage of the season. On the Green Mile the Steinhoff Cobras will host Steinhoff Heimat from UFS in a curtain-raiser to the main Varsity Cup game.

In Pretoria both Steinhoff Onderstepoort and Steinhoff Oppidani will be looking for their first wins of the season, whilst Steinhoff Patria and Steinhoff Medies will face each other with top spot in their pool on the line.

Hi everyone, hope there is someone watching Varsity cup today.

  • 2

GBS is cut of from the outside world. His Electricity bill ran too high and he was disconnected from the grid. That is why we still have power.

    Weary

No on a serious note his whole Town or area is off. Something like the Sub station blew up. The truth wont come out of Eskom,s mouths.
The fact is we wont have Game threads because this happened early today and indications are that the power will only be restored later tonight.

PS. Now GBS is on top of his roof working a bit. He is cleaning the roof.

Hoping for a good Pukke win

  • 6

No power here in the Panne since 04:00 this morning, will see if we can get SuperBul to do the live games for you.

Apparently still going to be off for another 6 hours!

    This is sooooo frustrating!

    See laters…..

    Amazed

  • 7

SuperBul, doen die 2 Live game threads man!

  • 8

Terrible weather, sloppy play from Pukke, skew line outs, needless penalties.
Wits hanging in and if Pukke don’t get things right it might be much closer than they would have expected or anticipated
    Still 0-0 after 16 minutes

  • 9

Crawling over the tryline from the Pukke wing?

  • 10

    @ grootblousmile:
Kyk of die tweede een darem amper reg is , die een gaan ek nie maak nie , sorry. Ek kry boonop baie eie besigheids oproepe. moet nog dinge reel vir more se trip Tzaneen toe

  • 11

So many movements in going over the line, it looked like that dance move they call the worm or something

    Overjoy

  • 12

Still 0-0 at the 20 minute mark

  • 13

Looks like Pukke is the only team worse than the Stormers when it comes to line out feeding

  • 14

Pukke hooker makes up for the line outs by scoring
8-0 to Pukke, pink ball try as well

  • 15

Yellow card against Wits center, spear tackle

  • 16

    @ nortierd:
Dankie dat jy uit help. Toe bars die ark oop van 4 uur, oproep na oproep. Wat de hel, almal wou gou hul Maandag produktief laat lyk van 4 uur af.

  • 17

Pukke keep opting for the 5m line out penalty and keep losing the line out and 1 player advantage

Hierdie is so n morsige wedstryd, ek twyfel of enige mense kyk
Worst line outs I’ve seen since watching Deon Fourie’s ” coaching for hookers ” DVD
    Wink

  • 19

Wits getting close, no try awarded, TMO decision.

  • 20

Wits make another schoolboy error by dropping the ball from a quick tap penalty 5m out from Pukke tryline.
Really horrible weather, rain and wind, but the mistakes are worse from both sides

  • 21

Wits knock on again while on attack.
They look slightly better than the log leaders today, even though they are propping up the bottom of the log
Half time, still 8-0 to Pukke

  • 22

    10 @ superBul:
Is jy uit Edit op die 2de ene, moet hom regmaak en Sticky maak.

  • 23

UCT 18-0 Shimlas down in Cape Town
Maybe Ikeys get their first home win today?

  • 24

    @ nortierd:

Lol.. Wait till you see the new hooker Stephen Coetzee who is flying out to join the Stormers in NZ.

He is also a graduate (cum laude) of the Deon Fourie’s School of line-out throwing … his throwing into the lineouts was the only real weakness in an excellent WP under 21 team last year.

  • 25

Wits squander yet another attack on the Pukke tryline
Pukke must be very close to a yellow card now

    Howzit Rob
Lol, why am I not surprised
What is CharlesM doing down there? Ha ha

  • 27

18-0 for Ikeys over Shimlas at half time

  • 28

Looks like many predictions in this Pukke game will be too high, the weather is definitely not conducive to points being scored
    Still only 8-0 to Pukke
    Anyone’s games here
    30 minutes to go

  • 29

Another 5m line out by Pukke, another skew throw

  • 30

    @ nortierd:

They way they apply logic down here CharlesM has probably been tasked to coach the placekickers and not the hookers.

I shudder at the thought of Deon again having to take the lineout throws when Liebenberg breaks down specially now that they have only one healthy lock left.

The only good thing that can perhaps come out of a disastrous tour down under is it might forces Thelo and co to make some changes to the coaching staff… maybe bring Gert Smal in as Director of Rugby…
