Pieter-Steph du ToitCell C SharksPieter-Steph du Toit underwent a scan to his knee yesterday with the disappointing news that he sustained an ACL injury and will be out for the remainder of the year.

Sharks website release

The young lock sustained the injury to his anterior cruciate ligament at training on Thursday and the bad news was confirmed when he went for a scan later in the day to determine the extent of that injury to the knee ligaments.

His place in the starting line-up was confirmed yesterday, Stephan Lewies shifts from the bench to take over from du Toit, while his replacement on the bench has not been confirmed as yet.

    @ robzim:
Or like Jannie Engelbrecht scoring two WP tries against NTvl with a broken collar bone in a CC final at Loftus!
Still don’t understand why they called ‘Bang Jannie’ at Maties, though…

    @ Pietman:
haha yes but a lot of Jakes success in the first year was partly because Jaco was excellent, he just fell off the wagon spectacularly.

Pierre went on to win the Super rugby a couple of times after that though, might have been the coach? 😛

Lewies done the lineout calls playing u21 he can do it no problems. Right now it will be Kanko as he was superb doing that for us when we beat your Stormers in the 2012 SR semi final…

    Playing U21 for which province?
Surely you don’t have a home bred player who came through the KZN junior ranks in your team?

    @ MacroBull:
Jaco nearly fell of the poles at Kings Park also, Puma pelting him with left over bunny chow from the stands, most probably…. Overjoy

    @Pietman
Wearing his What would Jaco Do bracelet

  • 37

    @ nortierd:
Jaco played for Sharks as well, btw…

  • 38

haha ou jaco, he was such a good player that fell so dramatically, I will always remember that game vs the aussies where he knocked the ball and claimed the drop goal Overjoy

    37 @ Pietman:
Jaco van der Westhuizen grew up and went to school in Witbank (Mordor) at a stage in his high school career… that’s where he got his brain damage from… hehehehe

  • 40

  • 41

    @ grootblousmile:
Or maybe when he went to play for the sharks

  • 42

    @ Pietman:
Flok, delete first sentence please…dit kom daarvan as jy vir Puma spot, tik jy later ook nes hy!

  • 43

Ek gaan nou eers n ‘power nap’ vat, al die rugby put my uit…soos Nortier se, ons jonger generasie kan nie die ‘punch’ vat soos daaaai tyd se spelers nie… !
    Tjeers, sien more vroeg weer.

  • 44

    41 @ MacroBull:
No, he went to go play for the Sharks because he had brain damage, and thus could not make an intelligent choice at the time… hehehe

His choice to go play at the Bulls was made FOR him, by someone else.

    Overjoy

I always remember this one try of Jaco van der Westhuizen it was in the reds game in 2007, I just watched the highlights again and it is amazing how good our forwards handling skills were.

Also It got me thinking, I wish Ludeke could lure Derrick kuun out of retirement to fill the hooker roll again.

  • 46

Ja, the guys are soft. Even not so long ago, Juba playing in the 95 WC final with a coke bottle as his wrist guard for his broken wrist.

  • 47

    @ MacroBull:
Kuun yes, great player, the Bulls’ own Deon Fourie.

  • 48

En NOU moet ek regtig maak soos Roggof…of Fern, sien later.

  • 49

In the old days a serious knee injury was the end of a player’s career.

Tough luck PietStef…! A blow to the Sharks and the Boks…

Speaking of so many young guys who are injured so often…?

I’m no expert… but I spoke to a biokineticist about a month ago… He is not a huge rugby fan but players at school and junior levels make up quite a percentage of his business…
He said we should expect lots of injuries… to the younger guys especially… he says a lot of his time is spent trying to convince these guys to build up slowly through plain old hard work… but they all have big ambitions and want to play for a SR side or the Boks “now”…
He explained very clearly to me how “physique enhancers” are very effective at building and strengthening muscles… but do absolutely nothing for the tendons and ligaments…
The end result being you have muscles that are too strong for the tendons that attach them to the bones…
He said it does not take much to put tendons under more pressure than they are designed or trained to cope with… he reckoned they would not even need to be playing a match to exert the sort of pressure that could pop a tendon or ligament… “they could even do it at training or just fooling around”…

Now I’m not accusing PietStef, Arno or anyone else of anything… but we all know that steroids is a massive problem in schools rugby… Goosen was busted while still at school…
But we need to ask ourselves honestly… why are so many young guys popping ligaments and tendons so often…?
Surely SARU has to step in, investigate and come up with some sort of strategy to sort out what is obviously becoming a big problem…?

    @ dWeePer:
good point, there rarely was a come back.

  • 54

    @ ufo:

Well written and food for thought as per usual.

Some people are very quick to accuse competitors in sports like cycling of doping but imo if rugby players are subjected to the same stringent testing they (the accusers) will jump off their high horses very soon.

Consistent and rigorous- including out of season- testing is the only way to go…. if Armstrong had to open his house at 2 o clock in the morning to get a blood sample taken why can a rugby player not do the same.

    Not true
We accuse dopers of getting on bicycles and blocking the road
    Wink

    @ nortierd:

You should have been in Cape Town last Sunday when nearly 35 000 dopers (including wannabees) did the blocking.

He was after all once beaten by a cyclist in a race between Buckingham palace and Heathrow during peak hours while he was driving a Ferrari or something Pleasure
