StormersAllister CoetzeeDHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee was again left lamenting crucial mistakes after his team’s 17-22 loss to the Reds in Brisbane on Saturday, but he was proud of the effort that his players put into their final tour match.

The DHL Stormers will fly back home to South Africa on Sunday after four narrow tour losses in Australasia, but Coetzee told his team’s official website: “We played so well at times (against the Reds)… only for crucial mistakes to cost us again.

“I still believe that we have the ability to beat any team (we play against), unfortunately we’re still making the same mistakes at crucial moments. It’s been our trend, but it’s something that we can rectify.

“Our line-out let us down today and we made a few mistakes in trying to run the ball back from deep in the second half, but I cannot fault the players’ effort… the effort is there!

“Not many teams can come back from 10-22 down against a Reds team in Brisbane and very nearly come away with a victory. We picked up two losing bonus points on this tour, which shows how close we’ve been on two occasions and, of course, we conceded late tries against the Chiefs and Brumbies to lose out on bonus points.”

The DHL Stormers have 10 league matches to come, seven of which are at home between now and mid-July.

“We’ve played at home just once this year, in six games,” Coetzee told www.iamastormer.com.

“Yes, it’s been a tough tour and, yes, we were unable to come away with a win on tour, but we’re all looking forward to getting home to our families, seeing familiar faces and building some momentum back at home at DHL Newlands.”

Unfortunately, experienced backline star Gio Aplon will be out of action for some time with a dislocated elbow, having left the field in the 23rd minute after falling awkwardly in a tackle.

“Gio dislocated his left elbow and, at this stage, it seems that he will be out of action for six to eight weeks,” said Coetzee. “It’s obviously a blow to lose someone of his ability and experience, but one bit of solace is that it’s not a fracture.

“(Lock) Jurie van Vuuren also fell awkwardly on his shoulder and had to come off, but he should be good to go for the Waratahs game.”

The DHL Stormers will land in Cape Town on Sunday evening and will resume training on Tuesday.

And so are the losses. What more could anyone want?

  • 2

Show us the results, Toetie. We know “the effort is there.”

Why is it that everybody know that everybody knows that Deon Fourie cannot throw a straight ball in the line out to save his life, yet you started with him at hooker? Did we not win more line out ball on our OWN throw when the Coetzee laaitie came on? Why didn’t he start?

Fourie must play at 6 and if he does not want to play there, kick him to the curb. He may be able to hook a ball, but he can’t throw a ball straight.

  • 3

Agreed Clovis and this is not something new to Fourie’s play. It freaks me out that we cannot get our primary phases like line-outs 100% accurate. They are professionals for crying out loud.

If the coach cannot see this then we need a new coach. Simple.

The Stormers played themselves into winning positions in all 4 matches on tour, and each time an attacking move was cut short due to stupid errors that a team in the professional era should not make. Knock-ons in contact, poor line-outs, penalty kicks not finding touch or kickable points going begging.

We had the chance to win at least 2, if not 4 of these games on tour, but they have no one else to blame but themselves.

That pisses me off more than anything.

I see on News24 they have an article that Frans Steyn has been cited for his tackle on Beale, but no mention of Horne’s swinging arm on Steyn, and on SuperSport’s website they have an article that Horne has been cited for the swinging arm, but no mention of Steyn’s citing.
It would seem like both have been cited, but difficult to confirm

  • 5

    @4
Report on ESPN.scrum confirms both were cited.
Reading this report it almost seems as if there was more action off the field between the coaches than on the field.
I didn’t see too much of the match with the cricket on, so I have no idea whether there is merit in some of the issues.

Wallabies winger Rob Horne and Springboks inside centre Francois Steyn are both facing possible suspensions following the New South Wales Waratahs’ spiteful 32-10 Super Rugby loss to the ladder-leading Sharks in Durban.

Horne has been charged by the citing commissioner with striking after setting the tone for the fiery encounter when he caught Steyn high with a swinging arm in the 16th minute, initially escaping with just a warning from referee Mike Fraser. Steyn is charged with a dangerous tackle after backslamming Waratahs centre Kurtley Beale eight minutes later, forcing him off the field for a short time for a concussion test.

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika was left mystified by a match-turning decision by Fraser to sin-bin Tahs captain Dave Dennis for a push at a scrum in the 48th minute of a match featuring plenty of niggle. The Sharks took immediate advantage of the extra man to score through hooker Bismarck du Plessis and put the match virtually out of reach at 19-3.

Cheika was struggling to explain how his team ended up on the end of a 20-9 penalty count – and were punished so heavily in the scrum – when asked if Fraser failed to keep a lid on rising tensions.

“With everything that went on we had a player sent to the sin-bin for pushing. You can make what you want of that,” Cheika told AAP. “It’s obvious. You can’t give away 22 penalties and win a game away from home. It’s impossible.”

Cheika acknowledged his side’s inability to build pressure as well as two missed penalty kicks in the first half, also cost them any chance of pulling off a major scalp on the road and returning to the top of the Australian Conference.

When told of Cheika’s thoughts on the crippling penalty count that went against the visitors, former Brumbies coach White continued a feud by baiting his NSW counterpart.

“Whatever Michael Cheika says, we believe, don’t we?” said White, lighting the fuse should the two heavyweight sides meet again come finals time. “There had been a lot of talk in the media about [going] toe to toe and intensity and aggression, so I suppose I must thank Mike [Cheika] for making my team talk easier. I just put it all on the board.”

White also couldn’t resist poking fun at Cheika over breaking a glass pane at Canberra Stadium two weeks ago. “I just want to see if our coaches’ box is still alright, because I have to get (chief executive John Smit) to get some insurance for it,” he said.

Israel Folau’s absence at the back was telling as the Waratahs failed to make the most of some prime first-half chances, but Cheika is confident the star fullback will recover from a throat injury in time to lead NSW into battle against the Stormers in Cape Town next week.

During the match, Sharks skipper du Plessis asked the referees to watch for Waratahs players punching in the tackle, while NSW’s South African-born lock Jacques Potgieter was warned for the manner in which he was cannoning into the ruck. In the end it was the slightest push from Dennis to Jannie du Plessis at a scrum which brought about the first and only yellow card – even though the Sharks prop retaliated with an even firmer shove.

With Dennis off the field, Cheika stormed down from his box to the sideline to deliver a direct message to defensive coach Nathan Grey, but denied claims made in television commentary that he also exchanged words with the assistant referees. Cheika gave full marks to his side for their intensity but said the Waratahs must get better at delivering under pressure.

“When the level goes up we’ve got to make sure we bring our accuracy as well as our intensity,” he said. “It’s just a learning curve for us.”

Coetzee – ‘The effort is there’

The most important effort that is needed is a vigorous effort to get rid of Coetzee.

  • 7

There are no medals for effort, only winning counts. The effort is not good enough.

    @ Stormersboy@3:
I agree 100%. But it’s not just the Stormers that makes errors at crucial times. The Bulls also suffer from this disease. They setup perfect opportunity just to spoil it with a handling error. It seems like SA players doesn’t train high intensity ball handling.

  • 8

Cool heads should prevail among the Stormers supporters, former Nama1 included!
    😉
The Stormers put together a respectable 4 away games, should have won the Saders and the Brumbies’ encounters and were close enough to win the other 2 matches, while suffering more than their fair share of injuries,
    Gentlemen, PLEASE!
    About Fourie:
    1. Simmons and Horwill are Aus 1st choice pair of locks and
remember; a line out is a CONTEST
    2. The Sormers had their locks in a specialist Flank (Rhodes) and a no name Lobbert who seemed to suffer from astigmatism, he clearly can’t project the ball’s trajectory
    3. Fourie IMO is a way better thrower that that pathetic ‘Scarra’ 😉

  • 9

Well they get paid shitloads of money, you kind of expect them to make an effort.

  • 10

We need a new coach plain and simple rugby got so bad that i rather watch cricket instead of rugby these days. Cry

For the money these guys are getting i will also make an effort no excuse, in sport to secure your job is to get results and clearly we are not getting them.

Somebody need to tell the coaching staff that the game plan is out of date. Yes we had a couple of close calls but the close calls do not give any points on the log and that is where you see if the season is a success or fail and @ the moment the Stormers FAIL we need results to show everybody can see the effort is there!!!

  • 11

It’s a sad day when I end up enjoying the Liverpool game more than the Stormers game.

    Ai tog.

  • 12

    @ Stormersboy:
It’s a sad day when you rather go and do your monthly shopping than sit and watch the Stormers game.

  • 13

    @ Stormersboy:

Hey, that is fine… if it was a Manchester United game that you enjoyed so much I would have been very worried though 🙂

  • 14

    @ robzim:
    YNWA boet.

Plus it was a great game.

    lol.

  • 15

  • 18

    @ Stormersboy:

    @14

Indeed… to see Luis Suarez in full flight is a sight to behold… and i am not referring to his Hollywood standard acting skills that comes with the package 🙂

    @ Ashley:

    @16

hahaha…. en verder sal hy dalk byvoeg: ” En dit sluit jou ook in Deon, jy is my groot staatmakker, dis nie jou skuld dat jy so kak ingegooi het nie”

  • 19

    @ robzim:
Yes, we could have put a few more past them too.

If AC can’t see that Deon isn’t a 2 then I don’t know. Although who are we kidding, he can’t.

  • 20

en vorie game issit seker: “kom, kom manne, maak ñ kringetjie! geo sal jy vi ons insit?” aplon: “ja oom toetie”

I have just been invited to the press conference at Newlands at 14h00 later today. I won’t make it obviously, but I expect that there will be a press release posted shortly thereafter, which I will post, if Rudi doesn’t do it before me.

Gert to be appointed, coaches to remain?

  • 24

    @ nortierd:
    I guess we’ll find out.

Hope not personally, hope it’s a clean sweep. But won’t happen.

  • 25

    stormers @ 24
hoping for the same, but agree, don’t think it will happen!

  • 26

I believe there is a clause in the coaching staff contract that says they can be fired without expensive payouts if the Stormers finish outside the top 6?

    Is that now a certainty?

  • 27

    WPRU to pay out MIIILIOOOOONNNS

  • 28

    @ Stormersboy:
    @ Ashley:

    yep… gert is a big man… let’s hope he carries a big broom…

i just hope they don’t go into this half-baked… there either needs to be complete change or no change and back the current crew again…
it would be more of a hindrance trying to put new structures and gameplans in place with people still around responsible for the current situation…
let’s hope sanity prevails and they do sweep clean…

  • 29

    macrobull @ 27
toetie hou v groot wings. miskien kan ons hom daai samoan geskenk gee? Conceited

  • 30

    @ Ashley:
Dalk like hy net die oorsese spelers?

Dalk is dit in sy onderbewussyn dat hy will gaan travel, al wat hy soek is ‘n vliegtuig kaartjie en dan n klomp no. 10 truie wat proudfoot by die voorspelers in sy toekomstige clubspan kan uitdeel en fleckie kort… um ek weet nie, dalk n foon dat hy ook die agterlyn kan join by die oefeninge.
