Marnitz BoshoffWillie Le RouxSuper RugbySouth African franchises won two of the four matches they were involved in in round-five of the Super Rugby competition over the past weekend.

Cheetahs fullback Willie le Roux and Lions flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff continue to make major contributions for their respective teams, as is evident from statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby Stats App.

Sport24

Dead-eye Boshoff was once again the leading points-scorer this weekend as he contributed 24 of his side’s points with three conversions, four penalties and two drop goals.

He was the only player that has scored points through drop goals in the fifth round as the Lions edged the Blues 39-36 at Ellis Park.

Boshoff is only two penalty conversions away from reaching 100 points in only six Vodacom Super Rugby matches.

Boshoff is the leading points machine – scoring at an average of 18.8 points per match – with Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen 40 points behind him in second spot.

Meanwhile, the fleet-footed Le Roux has been in superb form for the Cheetahs, despite his side struggling to hit their straps in their first five matches of the season.

Le Roux made 18 carries – the most over the past weekend – in the Cheetahs’ 60-27 defeat to the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday.

He is followed by Beauden Barrett, who was the Hurricanes’ star-performer against the Cheetahs, and is level on 15 carries with Luke Braid (Blues), Sarel Pretorius (Cheetahs), while Ben Smith (Highlanders) made 14.

Le Roux is the leading the overall carries from all five rounds with 53, and also shares the top spot in the offloads category with Blues fullback Benji Marshall with five apiece in their respective matches this weekend.

The stats from the Cheetahs’ match against the Hurricanes paint a picture of tireless tackling by the South African franchise. The Free State side made a whopping 170 tackles compared to the 112 by the Hurricanes, and it is not surprising that Cheetahs players top the tackles made category from round five.

Cheetahs forwards Boom Prinsloo (24 tackles), Lood de Jager (17) and Phillip van der Walt (17) made the most tackles of the weekend.  They were followed by Lions captain Warren Whiteley (17) and the Western Force’s Matt Hodgson.

A lot of interesting info here thanks and we could spend ages dissecting and talking about all the various numbers. I know it must be quite a comprehensive data base so maybe not practitcal to list all the various stats and expanding on them, for example metres gained from all the kicking tackle success percentage wise, and also that the context of the article is highlighting the contributions Boshoff and Le Roux are making for their teams, but still for me the most important numbers are missing – detail about tries scored.

What is the defintion of “offload” as quoted here, it surely can’t merely be passing as you would think scrumhalf and flyhalf would be leading this not a fullback, do they maybe when getting the pass away once in full flight and have gained certain ground?

  • 3

    @ Bullscot:
I think offload refers to a player passing the ball as he gets tackled

    @ Bullscot:

If you thought you were goign to spend ages disecting the stats in this articles you are going to spends a thousand years disecting the stats of 350+ players

    @ MacroBull:
Thanks for that help regarding offloads defintion MacroBull. Will have a look and see if its a free App may be worth downloading although would it work over here or just on SA, Aus, NZ phones? Yeah you are right it would take forever to get through that all, detail on more than 350 players is a lot, stuff in percentages and also grouped by teams is also what I find interesting and a much smaller amount of info to take into account, for example try assists, time spent in opposition half versus tries scored, tackle success rate of the team… could go on for a long time. From the detail you gave me it seems our SA flyhalfs kick a lot, even Lambie playing in a team that is scoring lots of tries kicks quite a bit, almost twice as often as Cruden.

    @ MacroBull:
While not showing up as much of a running, passing flyhalf, Boshoff’s stats show he is a really valuable player, apart from the obvious ability with the boot and being well in front as top scorer, I see he has had to make quite a lot of tackles in that channel and is succesful just more than 80% of the time with his tackling (so maybe could up that a bit), but also does quite a lot of ‘covering’ work for a flyhalf – quite a good number of kicks caught and loose balls collected says he is really valuable in his defensive effort to me, only 1 try assist though so hopefully he will increase that, will be interested to see how far back in a try scoring move do they go to decide ‘try assist’, surely it can’t be given to the one providing the final pass, what credit is given to all the forwards for example involved in multiple phase play and retention in the lead up to the try… PHEW too much information, time to go Tired

  • 10

    9 @ Bullscot:
should be surely can’t ONLY be given to the one providing the final pass.

It tells me one thing for sure, Willie le Roux gets a shitload of ball – most kicks and meters made – interesting reading
Getting stats on most tackles missed would be interesting as well

All these stats(remember i loved my stats) must be seen in a result context

like WleR doing whatever but look at his TEAM. What is it worth? Losing cant be blamed on him but his team might build far too much around his brilliance. are the not getting to predictable? CHEETAHS lost 4 out of 5.

The Lions results are looking greater with 3 wins out of 5 games. They play more as a team? Playing his position well in a TEAM context makes his stats more valuable.

2 years back Elton Jantjes had a lot of high counts but his individual tricks did not work for the Team.

    Willie 12 tackles
    10 missed tackles!

    8 @ Bullscot:
It is a free app and there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work in Blighty.

Vodacom have spent a kakhuis vol amount of money promoting the app with the media contingent at SR games with give aways and competitions, as well as on DSTV advertising.

If it’s not on your phone’s app shop, you can download it from Vodacom’s website.

I have no problem with drop goals only that if you miss and the ball goes dead the ball is taken back to the kick.
This eliminates a pot shot and then a 22 kick to give them back possession.
