Wiehahn Herbst came through the Sharks Academy and made his Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup debuts in 2009. The 25-year-old from Klerksdorp, South Africa played his first Super Rugby game for the Sharks in the 2009/10 season and has gone on to make 37 appearances in the competition.

Herbst has represented South Africa at Schools and Under-19 levels and was part of the South African squad at the 2007 Under-19 World Championship in Ireland where he played at Ravenhill.

He also represented South Africa at the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales in 2008.

Speaking about his decision to join Ulster, Herbst said: “Ulster Rugby is a province on the up and for me it was just a great opportunity to develop my career and to take it to the next level.

“The team is doing extremely well at the moment and with the stadium being redeveloped there is a great set-up at Ravenhill – it will be exciting to be part of.”

Ulster’s director of rugby David Humphreys added: “I am delighted that Wiehahn has decided to join Ulster. He is a highly talented young player with a proven track record in a specialist position.

“I have no doubt that he will be a huge success at the province and that he will follow in the footsteps of the other overseas players that have come to Ravenhill in making a major contribution to the success of Ulster Rugby.”

Carl Bezuidenhout scored 11 points (1 conversion and 3 penalties) for Alan Solomons’ Edinburgh but it wasn’t enough to prevent the loss against Treviso who are coached by former Blue Bull Marius Goosen. Halftime – Treviso 3/9 Edinburgh. Edinburgh’s other points came from a late try by former Kings loose forward Cornell du Preez which gave Edinburgh the loosing bonus point, but du Preez probably cost Edinburgh a try by trying to go for the line on his own in the first half when he should have passed with a 3 on 2 overlap.
Tobias Botes scored 10 points for Treviso – 2 conversions and 2 penalties.

A good win and a bit of a surprise win for Cardiff Blues against Ulster, this after Cardiff Blues were hammered last week by Ospreys. Gareth Davies scored 23 points with 1 conversion and 7 penalties for Cardiff, while Ulster’s kicker Paddy Jackson scored 18 points – 6 penalties. Ruan Pienaar didn’t play for Ulster.

Not been a good sevens for South Africa who also lost in their pool game to Australia yesterday, would have faced Canada in the quarter final if they won that game.
