Wiehahn HerbstUlsterSharks tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst will join Ulster this summer on a three-year deal, it has been confirmed.

irishrugby

Wiehahn Herbst came through the Sharks Academy and made his Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup debuts in 2009. The 25-year-old from Klerksdorp, South Africa played his first Super Rugby game for the Sharks in the 2009/10 season and has gone on to make 37 appearances in the competition.

Herbst has represented South Africa at Schools and Under-19 levels and was part of the South African squad at the 2007 Under-19 World Championship in Ireland where he played at Ravenhill.

He also represented South Africa at the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales in 2008.

Speaking about his decision to join Ulster, Herbst said: “Ulster Rugby is a province on the up and for me it was just a great opportunity to develop my career and to take it to the next level.

“The team is doing extremely well at the moment and with the stadium being redeveloped there is a great set-up at Ravenhill – it will be exciting to be part of.”

Ulster’s director of rugby David Humphreys added: “I am delighted that Wiehahn has decided to join Ulster. He is a highly talented young player with a proven track record in a specialist position.

“I have no doubt that he will be a huge success at the province and that he will follow in the footsteps of the other overseas players that have come to Ravenhill in making a major contribution to the success of Ulster Rugby.”

    Sunday: Scarlets v Connacht

Latest score: Glasgow Warriors 0/0 Ospreys; GO GLASGOW!

  • 3

Latest score: Glasgow 0/3 Ospreys, penalty in 20th min by Dan Biggar

  • 4

Lol @ the Tjarks… Let me tell you your future, there is no squad system for the epic depth…

Come the Currie cup when arguably most of the players get called up into the bok squad, who is going to stay? who is going to stay there next year after the world cup? and what will you guys be doing when Jake also leaves, and throw his arms in the air saying, ekwarrinie?

    Golden era se poepol.

  • 5

Scrum Glasgow a few metres into Ospreys half just about half time

  • 6

Interesting passage of play prior to the scrum for Glasgow with Glasgow continually recycling the ball deep in their territory before Cusiter launched an up and under that Ospreys fullback knocked on

  • 7

Glasgow got their ball from the scrum but looked under a bit of pressure, Glasgow concede a penalty but the clock shows 41 minutes so surely its halftime

  • 8

Biggar just hoofs into touch direct from where he was standing for the teams to go in for half time, the penalty was advanced 10m but was still too far out for a shot at posts.

  • 9

Half time – Glasgow Warriors 0/3 Ospreys, Glasgow should be playing with the wind in second half so hopefully that helps

    @MacroBull
I may be way off target, but I get the impression Jake is only back to ruffle feathers and show up HM.
His initial comments about Lambie being the best 10 and that he will play every minute of every game smacked of an in your face dig to HM and his preference of Morne and Goosen over Lambie. That comment has already backfired because of a tick ( seriously Delighted )
    and the Bulls.
His decision to give Bismarck the captaincy is also a way of countering Strauss as the second choice ( sometimes first ) Bok hooker, but popular franchise captain.
Lastly, these positional changes of his and the comment about Mvovo all of a sudden being good enough to play 15 for the Boks and being in the same class as Percy is just idiotic, and seems to be a ploy to score brownie points with the politicians. I can imagine Fikile kak king HM out about why must Willie play 15 when Mvovo is good enough to represent the Boks there.

    @ nortierd:
Look, Jake does not feel a hoot for the Sharks, he wants to coach the Boks… England, or Australia.

I think the Mvovu thing was just sensationalist reporting, I think Jake said something along the lines of he should be good enough there even for the Boks, we will have to see though.

Jake is there with a short term gameplan to try and take over the boks after 2015, everything he is saying and doing is directed to that goal alone.

    @ Bullscot:
Herbst, was punted for higher honours one or two years ago, he is pretty good, he has fallen down the order with the acquisition of Adriaanse, but Adriaanse has not had the impact people had hoped for IMO, he has been pretty poor after his epic year with the Cheetahs last year, so this is a big loss for the Tjarks, because I highly doubt the current Tjark bok frontrow will remain after 2015.

    @ nortierd:
I regret to say but I have agree with you on Jake, there is something different about him since his sojourn in Oz, and I think you have hit it on the nail. The man is obviously still trying to be part of the international scene as Macrobul says, and he will use the Sharks coaching job merely as an intermediate to make that step. He apparently has no loyalty to any team in the SA conference, he regards himself as ‘outside specialist’. And yes Nortie, his comments about Vic Matfield is a direct challenge to Heyneke, who still rates Vic as a world beater and part of his world cup plans.
The Sharks may just be Jake’s last stand, though. But don’t be surprised if Hoskins and some other sport politicians start singing his praises soon….

  • 18

    15 @ MacroBull:
Thanks MacroBull thought that he may be quite good having represented SA at junior level, but then again wasn’t sure as not all the juniors shine at senior level. He would be quite experienced by now making his debut way back in 2009 as it says in Super rugby and the 37 games they say he played I guess would be roughly half the Sharks games in that time although possibly many of those would have been from the bench? But at 25 he still has lots of time on his side, for a prop, so as you rate him good then looks like its been a good bit of business for Ulster, and not being first second pick, if you know what I mean, behind Jannie and now Adrianse one can understand him looking for work elsewhere especially as he has been with them for quite a long time.

  • 19

    10 @ nortierd:
My word now there is conspiracy theory and a half, it did seem ‘odd’ that Jake White came back so suddenly to the Sharks I thought he was settled at the Brumbies and would be there for a while until an international job came up so thanks for your explanation Amazed Come on though seriously you can’t think someone would take a job just to undermine someone else, or maybe what you are suggesting about showing up Mr Meyer is part of a process to try and get into the SA international set up? But surely he would have been approached by John Smit as the Sharks boss in the first place so do we now assume the John Smit is a baddy looking to help someone ‘show up’ the national coach Pondering Agree that Bismarck should not be captain, he is a fine player but for me not one to lead as he can be quite a dirty player, but for a long time he played second fiddle to Smit when all and sundry though he should be the Boks first choice, so I would think Bismarck must be first choice in almost anyone’s books whether he is captain or not, if anything I think being made captain has put an extra burden on du Plessis so if anything would work against him just concentrating on his own form.
Don’t agree with Jake White shifting Mvovo onto fullback and especially what you have said White’s opinion has been given regarding him being a Bok, but after Le Roux the cupboard seems bare so who knows this may turn out to be good and offer the Boks another option if Mvovo masters the position.

    10 @ nortierd:
Also there was a time, especially the season before last when almost all non Bull supporters would have agreed that Lambie should be chosen ahead of Morne Steyn, were they also just trying to undermine Mr Meyer… anyway can’t understand all this loving from the Cape for Mr Meyer now or is it just complete disdain for a World Cup winning coach Happy-Grin

Jake the Snake. His real colours coming out now. I dont like the man and he tries to alienate the rest of us. I was so against the posibility ofhim coming to the Bulls. Thank heavens that never happend.

Pietman the day he coaches the Bulls i might do a Pietman/Luke thing.

  • 22

    @Bullscott
    Morning
Jake is a very astute coach and his strongest point is knowing his own weaknesses and not being afraid to get experts in to address those.
I actually like the guy, he did win us a WC, and that is good enough in my books.
It’s as Pietman said, almost like he has changed a bit after the Aussie job and not getting the Australian coaching job.
The manner of some of his comments seems to be in direct contrast to what HM believes in, and that is the issue.
People will start playing the two off against each other, and then comparisons will be made.
Like MacroBull also said, he doesn’t give a hoot about the Sharks, he is merely using them as a vehicle to get to his main goal, which is to a National side coach again.
Make no mistake, he seriously needs the Sharks to do very well to gain leverage over the other coaches, so he will want them to win the SR.
There are just too many direct contradictions to the doctrine of HM coming from him at in opportune times and he knows the political landscape of SA very well and any coach who can appease the politicians has a leg in the door already.

Final score in last night’s PRO12 game: Glasgow Warriors 11/9 Ospreys, was a great last quarter of the game, very tense so glad Glasgow managed to come back from behind and then hold on, pity a try of Glasgow was disallowed near the end so Ospreys got a losing bonus point.

Careful bru, I also thought it improbable that Luke would captain my beloved Stormers, and look what my stupidity cost me by betting against those odds… Tears

  • 26

    @ Bullscot:
There is just something fishy about Jake, not sure how long his contract at the Sharks is, but I think he would drop them at a moments notice, I think John Smiths intentions to get Jake was pure, Jake is a very good motivator, as we can see with Mvovu, but it is all the additional extras that makes me suspicious, he must think he must he is extremely talented with mind games.

He makes it no secret he wants to coach the Springboks after 2015, he would sacrifice the sharks and the springboks pre 2015 for that, hell I bet he truly believes that the he will coach the Boks at the world cup next year.

Then there is also the Brendan Venter issue.

  • 27

    22 @ nortierd:
All interesting points nortierd guess we will just have to ‘watch this space’, one thing surely it should be in our best interest to have someone who’s coaching ability you rate contributing by coaching a South African team rather than helping, as he did, another country’s game, and a big rival one at that. Hey man must dash have a good one cheers for now

Jake was coming to the Bulls? that is some malicious rumours!

  • 30

When Jake leaves the Sharks after pursuing his short term goals they will be a mess. I think he has received too much credit in the recent acquisitions at the Sharks, people underestimate John Smith, their supporters should rely entirely in John to lead them to the “golden era”.
