181 @ Sharks_forever:
Phweeeew, 207 short… Aus could enforce the follow on but I do not think they would now.
All Aus need to win is stack up a quick 200 or little more runs, declare and have quite a bit more than a day and a session to bowl the Blomme moertoe.
@ grootblousmile:
Yup they are sitting pretty, but hey we have come out of a situation like this before, pity Steyn is injured, that alone will be a huge loss for us.
What I find in this series is how patient Aussie have been and also how well they left the ball where needed.
Ozzmob certainly in a hurry to get runs on the board…
16 / 0 after 3 overs
Well only one team in it,
Morkel has again showed he is easy to get runs against and keeps releasing any pressure the Aussies might feel,
Aus 27 / 0 after 6 overs – Stumps Day 3
Farewell Graeme Smith been a fine captain for South Africa for a long time. Hopefully he will play one last good knock to at least save this match.
There we have it, proof tha Smith reads blogs, so many people asked for him to be dropped, he did the honorable thing and retired.
Those that felt he was undeserving of his starting place, let’s see how things transpire in the next 12-18 months and if we still remain nr 1 in the world.
I guess AB will take over the captaincy, but I can’t help thinking that they must somehow bring De Kock in permanently now.
We have lost an icon at 1 and in the middle order in the space of 2 series, both players that were more revered and respected in the opposition countries and teams’ than with their own countries supporters.
Good luck Biff, most of us saw you go from a brash youngster to an astute leader and one of the world’s best openers.
I thought Abbott was supposed to have some pace?
When was the last time a team declared twice in on test match?
in one*
Wow Australia are flying – 142/1 in just the 31st over, 349 runs ahead with at least 73 overs left today plus whole day tomorrow.
At least it looks as if the scoring rate has slowed down a bit, noted the last 10 overs they have only scored 24 runs.
192 @ MacroBull:
That is a good question MacroBull
Wonder how far ahead Australia want to be before they declare, would guess at least 400, but with lots of time left wonder if they will opt for around a 450 lead before declaring.
Four from last delivery of Duminy over spoiled what had been a scoreless over till then – Aus 151/2
@ Bullscot:
They’ll declare at lunch I think.
Aus 170/1, 377 runs ahead
Lunch on day 4 at Newlands: Australia 180/1 after 43 overs, 387 runs ahead with at least 61 overs left in the day.
Warner on 92 and Doolan 36 will resume batting after the break (unless of course there is declaration – but surely that is highly unlikely)
Am guessing Aus will come out and bat for about an hour after lunch and then look to declare, taking away the time for innings change that would give them around 40 overs to bowl to SA today, plus the 90 tomorrow, surely more than enough time to take the wickets required, if Proteas do get the draw from here it will be a job well done, and the win well that would be a supreme performance simply unthinkable.
While taking wickets would have been ideal at least the bowlers have done a good job of slowing done the scoring rate as the morning went on. The last 10 overs prior to lunch only went for 26 runs, possibly frustrating Australia a bit.
The longer Proteas can keep Warner from getting his hundred the better, although wonder if Clarke will instruct them to come out all guns blazing, regardless of Warner being in the 90s.
He should give Warner the opportunity to get a 100 in both innings, shouldn’t declare before then
Thank you Graeme for the wonderful leadership over the past decade. There have been many great moments in your career as well. To lose two great cricketers in one year is going to be difficult for the team. You were never intimidated by anyone and that is a great aspect of your leadership. You always took accountability, in a country where the leadership loves passing the buck… Your form has been up and down, but then so has most of the top order as pointed out yesterday by another blogger. The journey is going to be a tough one. No one really stands out as the next in line. I think Faf would make an exceptional leader, but his form is too up and down at the moment as well. No real standout leader in the team at the moment…
With regards to today… well the less said the better. You would think they have been playing on two different pitches… Let’s hope Biff can close his career on a game saving innings… Enough runs already, but he will bat for another hour or so…
