BullsStormersVictor Matfield made his return to the playing field, but it was not enough to prevent the Stormers recording an impressive 26-19 win at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The Super Rugby pre-season outing in Polokwane was a double blow for the Bulls, who will also be concerned about another knee injury suffered by star loose forward Arno Botha, the extent of which is knot known at this juncture, although it seemed  a serious injury.

It was a strong second half performance and a late try that secured the win for the Stormers, who outscored the Bulls by four tries to three.

Matfield, who made his first appearance on the playing field since the 2011 World Cup, only played the last 20 minutes.

Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis, who scored one of their tries, also converted three of the Stormers’ five-pointers to leave his mark on the game.

Flank Siya Kolisi scored two tries – both from mauls – either side of half-time, as the Stormers clawed their way back from a 5-12 deficit at the half-time break to come away with the win in front of a vociferous Polokwane crowd.

Kolisi’s second try, in the 44th minute, saw the scores draw level at 12-12, before the home side led by 19-12 going into the final quarter.

However, Catrakilis’ try – from a powerful Stormers scrum – saw the visitors draw level yet again before new boy Scott van Breda (who came on as a replacement) scored in the corner with two minutes left on the clock.

Catrakilis converted from out wide to give his team a seven-point buffer as the clock wound down and it proved enough in the end for the Men from Cape Town.

The Stormers will travel to Port Elizabeth next Friday to take on the Kings, before wrapping up their pre-season preparations with matches against Boland in Wellington on Saturday, February 15.

The Bulls, who play the Sharks in Round One of the competition, only have this one pre-season outing.

10 Responses to Super Rugby warm-up: Bulls pipped by Stormers in Polokwane, Blue Bulls pipped by Golden Lions

I don’t read much in warm-up games at all… but what is worrying is that the Bulls apparently strugled in the set pices (scrum penalties and lost a few lineouts before Matfield came on).

They also seemed to run out of steam towards the end of both games, losing both in the last few minutes, so are they fit enough and conditioned enough?

Arno Botha’s knee injury is not good news at all!

Victor Matfield says he feels wonderful, and is as fit as ever, without the aches and pains of a sore back and knees.

Reports would indicate he was’nt in peak form yesterday and even a bit “lazy” at time, but he managed to steal a vital lineout ball when the Bulls were under pressure in their own 22.

As a Sharks supporter,I really respect the Stormers

  • 4

I have said for years now that the Bulls two props are dog shit, now the Stormers have affirmed it.

  • 5

Bulls going into this comp with one warm up game, that is just stupid
and so sad about Arno Botha 🙁
Love it when they say the Stormers tight five is soft, bring it on

to be honest none of the articles I have read regarding this game really give a good indication. how the stormers won and the bulls lost is inconsequential.

how didnthe flyhalf go? did the hulls make 10 substitutions after half time? or did the stormers? how was hougaards seervice. how was tye bulls flyhalf? did de jongh pass once? who was winning the battle at the breakdown? did deon fourie come on ajd make a difference?

only thing we have “learnt” is that greyling and kruger does not cut the cheese. like it was some secret no one knew. and that matfield is a good lineout jumper.

    @ MacroBull:
Good point. The props struggling is something we have gotten used to over the past couple of years. And was predicted for this game. Just wonder how the props did against the Lions’.

There should be more news today on how the match unfolded and how the different players and aspects went on Saturday.

More injury clarity should also emerge on Arno Botha, saw him Tweet on the weekend that it was good to be back on the field and that he leaves recovery in the hands from above.

    @ grootblousmile:
    Thanks.
It would be truly sad if he’s going to be out of the game for another extended period. Was looking forward to seeing him play again.

Botha is an excellent player, I just hope that he isn’t the new Joe Van Niekerk or Werner Greef.
