StormersSailosi TagicakibauFormer Chiefs wing Sailosi Tagicakibau is set to join the Stormers on the Australasian leg of their Super Rugby tour.

The 31-year-old Samoan international has played 24 Tests (21 for Samoa and three for the Pacific Islanders) and has played in the last three World Cups.

The Stormers have been on the hunt for a big wing to add depth to their backline and seems to have found their man.

Tagicakibau, who is 1.93m tall and weighs 100kg, has played for London Irish in the English Premiership since 2005. He played eight Super Rugby games for the Chiefs back in 2005.

Earlier attempts by the Stormers to attain the services of  Tongan utility back Fraser Anderson, who plays for the Kobelco Steelers in Japan, proved unsuccessful.

The Stormers host the Hurricanes at Newlands on Friday (19:10 kick-off), before embarking on a tough tour where they will face the Crusaders, Chiefs, Brumbies and Reds.

Probably a good signing for Stormers.

Stormers play some very tough teams on the road this year, that will be tough for sure for them.

Can’t they find any South African players? Can’t see why they sign overseas based players.

  • 3

My guess is that he is counted toward the Quota number of 4 on the field?
See no other explanation, the Stormers’ Midget Brigade is depleted

The Stormers have been on the lookout for a large outside back for some time now, to replace both Gerhard Van der Heever and Bryan Habana.

They have approached quite a few players, both locally and overseas, but have failed to secure a signing until now.

I think it’s an excellent signing.

The guy is devastating with ball in hand and an excellent defender.

Not sure how good his hands are though, but I expect we’ll find out.

He’s not great at turning around and fielding kicks behind him though… like most islanders.

If Jaco Taute works out (big if) then we will have good cover in the outside are, with 4 good players in Taute, Aplon, Tagicakibau and the new Jason Robinson.

Acceptable if not as good as I’d like.

    @ grootblousmile:
True, it would be good to have a guy like Gio covering behind him then.

    @ Stormersboy:
Habana isn’t exactly ‘large’ while Vd Heever spent most of his Stormers’ tenure on the bench 😉
I guess he is alright for the position though, ticks several boxes?
    🙂

    @ Stormersboy:

He could be just what the doctor ordered.

Nakalavuki the second… lets hope he is not so lazy Wink

    @ Hondo:

Habana might not have a large frame but as a player he is massive.

Arguably the best bok back in the history of the game.

Irreplaceable, but at least this is an attempt..

He would have to learn quick, because thats the only ball he is going to get. Wink

Or tackles players in the air.

AC looked a bit gaunt on Boots and All.

Just hope Stormers don’t loose Pat Howard, everyone seems to get a chance but him
