Well done Jake’s Sharks. Never thought at the start we would finish with a bonus point in those conditions so to come away with the bonus was superb very happy with my team. Excellent start this year Sharks.
Thought our backs were superb last night. Also pleased to see a great crowd at the game.

Howzit bud,
How you doing? Hope well.
Don’t worry too much about Ben he is always like that though a harmless chap. Normally has a good sense of humour but always complains about the ref that is normal from Ben. He is a okay chap once you get to know him.
You pleased with our Sharks? We made some errors but all in all that was a great start to our SR season this year. Really chuffed we got the bonus point at the end.
Morning all. Good game by the Sharks, two great moves to see the first 2tries over. Some slick handling exposing the Bulls defence there, and a deserved win.
It’s the first game, so there will be some kinks to be worked out still, and credit to the teams on the day. The Bulls will have some concerns, as is mentioned above. At this stage I’s also have either JLP or Pollard before LF. I’d also start with Piet Van Zyl, he made a difference when he came on. Hougaard back to wing. It’s his best position.
The two Bulls centers have been struggling defensively for a while now, and continue to worry. This will be something that the opposing teams will target this year. JJ’s defensive lines are wrong and he still tackles like a wing. Jan still only makes 50-60% of his first time tackles, something a 2 cannot afford to do.
Still the Bulls will be back.
The Sharks will want lots of improvement still, a 60% Bulls team were withing shouting distance up until injury time.
*something a 12 cannot afford to do.
@ Puma:Hi pal.
Not overly impressed by Jannie Dup work rate.
Have a great day.
@ grumpy:
And you would of course be spot on there. I see that this match they subbed him at the 55 minute mark, normally he plays at least 57.
All of last year they kept talking about how “overplayed” he was but yet he never finished more that 60 minutes of a match. Doesn’t make sense, especially given his workrate during those 55 – 57 minutes.
He’s an OK scrummager, who has as many good games as bad, both for the Sharks and Boks, and brings nothing to the rest of the game.
Anyway last year he was the Stormers best player on the field in the league games between us and the Sharks, so I’m not really complaining on a Super Rugby level. On a Bok level he freaks me out though.
335 @ grumpy:
Adriaanse make a huge impact when he came on though. So we do have a very good tighthead on the bench who at some stage might start.
Our backline was superb I thought.

make = made

Howzit bud how you doing? Hope well. You still up in Pretoria?
How you see your Stormers go next week against the Lions at Ellis Park? Lions were better than most thought yesterday.
Is Taute still injured or what? Read he had picked up another injury. If so you think Aplon will go to Fullback?
Have to say Frans Steyn is looking incredible after losing so much weight. That is the best condition we have seen him in years. That is probably down to Jake for sure. Fransie was superb last night as well, totally outplayed Jan Serfontein and have to say Jordaan outplayed JJE as well, Lambie was excellent as well, just needs to work on his goal kicks other than that his over all play was out of the top draw. Mvovo had one of his best games yet as well. Odwa was solid and so was Marias. Our backline were superb.
Cobus too had a great game.
@ Puma:
Howzit mate. Yes now living up here on the highveld. It’s a great place (like anything, what you make of it lol). looking forward to seeing our guys run out against the Lions, after Saturday they won’t be taking anything for granted. We should have the goods on them though, if not then it’s going to be another long hard season. Still, I am hopeful, as every year.
Your team looked good. That backline is really gelling well. Very impressed. Frans and Paul could work out to be the combo of the tournament. Frans is good at holding up defenders and putting the players outside him in space, as we saw last night. Jordaan has the pace to exploit that. The other teams will have to be very careful against that setup. Mvovo as you say had an excellent game, one of his best and was for me the player of the day.
Lots to look forward to if you’re a Sharkie! Enjoy it!
Off to Durban for the week, back next weekend.
Cheers!
Lets be fair here:
Bulls props did well
Bulls hookers are shit
Bulls starting locks were good, Matfield was average
Bulls loosies were good, except for Spies who was dog shit
Hougaard was crap
The flyhalf was crap
The centres were crap
The wings were of ok
The fullback was crap
The Sharks props were ok
Bisamrk was quietish
Locks were good
Loosies were good, Coetzee was outstanding
The whole backline, including Fat Frans were good
And there it is.
Congrats Sharks, you took your chances and it paid of. The Bulls was better than what the score line suggests and I would be optimistic if I was a Bulls supporter, good things to come for them.
Thanks for the commentary you gave GBS, very neutral, I respect that. I thought the Ben character showed poor taste and 90% of his posts was about the ref. SWAK STYL BEN, JY MAAK EINTLIK NET JOU NAAM GAT.
Sharks second try imo should not have been given, but that is how it goes sometimes. A possible truck and trailer was also evident in the bulls try as two guys broke off the bunch and then bind again. As I said that is how it goes sometimes.
For those who said it was a sloppy game, guys if you have not experienced the humidity in Durban in February you really have no clue. It is like handling a ball smeared with grease. I thought for a Feb game it was quite good.
Lots of work for both teams ahead, it was not perfect.
Surprise of the night was the Sharks backline, they where superb.
I still think Jannie should join the stormers, he is a liability in the Sharks team.
The thing about Super Rugby is that you have to hit the deck running. The Bulls did not do that. The Sharks were the better team on the night and deserved to win. But the Bulls made the mistakes – throwing in at the lineouts, missed tackles in midfield, not scoring when in the red zone etc. The Bulls are a better side than that – and will come back.
As for the Cheetahs – they threw it away. They were the better side on the day. The Lions took their opportunities, converted them into points and were the hungrier side in the final 20 min utes. They will rue a loss at home.
I still think there is a long way in this tourney to go and still say that the team with the least injuries will reach the final. Injuries do play a huge roll as well as we saw last year with the Sharks and Stormers.
Okay on the wrong thread. Will repeat that on the Sharks/Bulls thread.
