The 33-year-old flanker, who is New Zealand’s most-capped player with 124 test appearances, will play at his fourth World Cup in Britain next year and said it was “reasonably unlikely” he would play beyond that tournament.

McCaw said the toll of professional rugby meant “just to play next year is not a given any more. I haven’t even considered beyond (2015) but I would say it is unlikely.”

He said he was also unlikely to sign a contract overseas because “if you have had enough of being bashed up in training and all those things, going over there just to earn some money doesn’t really appeal.”
