The Stormers have announced a 26-man squad which will travel up to Polokwane to face the Bulls in a Super Rugby warm-up fixture on the weekend.
In addition it appears that the Stormers are still open to contract a ‘Big Wing’ to alleviate their shortcomings and lack of size and stature of their current back three.
Stormers squad for Polokwane:
SuperSport reports that Rynhardt Elstadt will be making the switch back to the position where he first made his name for the Stormers when the Cape team plays the first Vodacom Super Rugby warm-up match of the season against the Bulls in Polokwane at the weekend.
With Andries Bekker having departed for Japan and Eben Etzebeth and De Kock Steenkamp both injured, Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has confirmed that he sees the burly Elstadt as a second row forward rather than a flanker at this stage of the build-up to Super Rugby.
A revelation in the Stormers second row in the 2011 season, when he built his reputation around several fired up showings in the No4 jersey, the emergence of Etzebeth in 2012 meant that Elstadt was first sidelined and then shifted to blindside flank. But Coetzee hasn’t forgotten his performances at lock, and is looking forward to seeing him start the new season in that position.
“Rynhardt was one of two players, the other being Pat Cilliers, that underwent an operation during the off-season, and if anything, he is a couple of weeks ahead of where he should have been in his recovery,” said Coetzee.
“I’ve been very impressed with how hard Rynhardt has trained and he is looking really strong and conditioned. He will have no problem switching back to lock and we will be looking to use him there against the Bulls.”
Also up for an appearance against the Bulls is young Ruan Botha, the young former Lions age-group player who was unable to play for the Stormers in his first season in the Cape because of a serious injury that required an operation.
“Ruan will probably start against the Bulls, and it will be a good baptism for him against a very strong Bulls lineout,” said Coetzee.
“He is a highly promising player and it was just unfortunate that for much of last year he was injured. Even when he did come back he was a bit overweight because of his lay-off, but he is looking great and in excellent condition as the new season approaches and this is his chance to show us what he can do.”
Botha, who was a member of the WP under-21 side that won the national age-group competition last season, will get his chance to play in Polokwane because big Argentinian Manuel Carizza, who has impressed the Stormers coaching staff in the pre-season, will be unavailable for the season pipe-opener.
“Carizza has a slight injury, just a bit of tightness, so we have decided it would be better not to play him this weekend,” said Coetzee.
The coach confirmed that while Carizza will be back in the thick of things shortly, the experienced Steenkamp will probably miss the opening Super Rugby fixture against the Lions in Johannesburg on 22 February.
“I doubt that De Kock will be back then. He is having a few more medical assessments done on the groin that has been bothering him since last season and we don’t where he stands at this stage.”
With so many locks missing, Coetzee said that Michael Rhodes, like Elstadt also a player who flits between second row and blindside flank, would also be seen as more of a lock for the time being.
Coetzee will name his team for the Polokwane clash on Wednesday but gave journalists who attended a press conference at Bellville on Monday the names of the 26 players who will make up the match day squad. All 26 players will be eligible to play in the game but there will be no rolling substitutions, meaning that once a player comes off he will not be able to return to the playing field.
Another player not available for Polokwane because of a slight injury is fullback Jaco Taute, with Ryno Eksteen, the talented former Bulls Schools flyhalf, being given an opportunity to prove that he qualifies as back-up in that position.
Stormers squad for Polokwane: Ryno Eksteen, Gio Aplon, Damian de Allende, Scott van Breda, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Kobus van Wyk, Gary van Aswegen, Demetri Catrakilis, Louis Schreuder, Nic Groom, Duane Vermeulen, Nizaam Carr, Siya Kolisi, Schalk Burger, Deon Fourie, Jean Kleyn, Ruan Botha, Michael Rhodes, Rynhardt Elstadt, Justin Ackermann, Ollie Kebble, Frans Malherbe, Steven Kitshoff, Scarra Ntubeni, Tiaan Liebenberg.
Big Wing sought:
The Super Rugby season kicks off in just a couple of weeks but that does not mean that the Stormers have given up hope of signing a quality wing to off-set the perceived lack of height and bulk in the back three, the supersport.com website reports.
The Stormers administration made it known last year that they were on the look-out for a player to bolster their resources at wing and/or fullback, but negotiations with a top Samoan wing broke down when he decided to head to the northern hemisphere instead. The lack of physical presence at the back has been a problem for the Stormers ever since the departure of the giant Fijian Sireli Naqelevuki in 2010.
Naqelevuki was not everyone’s favourite player and like a lot of players from the Pacific Islands he had weaknesses related to dropping back for kicks put in behind him. And he did make some glaring mistakes, including dropping a ball behind the tryline in a match against the Sharks that led to a try to the opposition team at a crucial stage which effectively ended his career in the Cape.
However, if you look back at videos of the Stormers games in those days, it would be noticeable that it was Naqelevuki who invariably got the Stormers across the advantage line, and it may be no coincidence that try scoring by the backline players has been a problem ever since the departure of a player who frequently engaged a couple of defenders when he had the ball.
It was for fear of the talented but much smaller players they had at the back being turned over out wide that the Stormers embarked on an ultra-conservative game-plan. The addition of some bulk at the back may well be a significant part of the secret to unlocking the Stormers’ attacking game.
Of course, the departure of Springbok Bryan Habana for overseas, followed by that of Gerhard van den Heever at the end of last year, has added to the urgency of the Stormers’ search. And the injury to Cheslin Kolbe, who although not big did gain experience in the last Currie Cup season, hasn’t helped matters either.
The return to fitness of fullback Jaco Taute, who is a strongly built human specimen, has eased some of the worry, but not totally.
“We are still looking for a wing. That search continues,” confirmed coach Allister Coetzee at a Stormers press conference.
“It is part of our culture to look for players from our own region first. We have done that, and we are hoping that someone like Pat Howard might come through this year. However, without having any names or specifics in mind at the moment, we are looking outside the region and will not stop our search for what we are looking for.”
One potential remedy to the problem, if the more obvious move of shifting skipper Jean de Villiers to the wing is not considered an option, is to move Damian de Allende there. The massively built former Milnerton High School pupil did make his debut for Western Province on the wing in 2012.
“Damian will be considered as a wing and we may well play him there against the Bulls at the weekend,” said Coetzee in reference to his selection for the first Super Rugby warm-up match in Polokwane.
“He will probably start on the wing. We will obviously still see him as an option at centre too after his strong season last year, so we may move him into the midfield later in the game.”
There is a perception that De Allende lacks the pace for the position – he has explosive pace over the first few metres but doesn’t sustain it – but Coetzee said that what was more important was that De Allende work on his positional play.
“That was the problem with him at wing in his first season. We also need to work on his fielding of the ball and his kicking, something that a wing has to do a lot,” he said.
Coetzee said he had been impressed with the strongly built utility back Scott van Breda since he came to the Stormers on trial from the Southern Kings, and said he would be keeping him in the squad for Super Rugby.
Meanwhile Taute is not available for the Polokwane match because of muscle tightness, so Coetzee is taking the opportunity to look at a left field option as potential fullback back-up. Ryno Eksteen, the former Bulls Schools flyhalf, has impressed Coetzee hugely during the pre-season and he is likely to get his chance in the last line of defence at some stage of the warm-up fixture.
“Ryno can play fullback, he has played there a lot in the past, and I am really excited about what he can offer and look forward to seeing his contribution,” said Coetzee.
Eksteen, secured on contract to WP even before it became clear two years ago that Handré Pollard had signed for the Bulls, was injured for most of his first season in the Cape but is now fully recovered and has worked hard during the preparation phase.
just use Brok Harris FFS
etter. maar ryno eksteen se naam steek uit soos n seer duim… die stormers se troef kaart?
kan iemand my meer vertel oor Eksteen? Geen idiee wie dit is nie? Wat is sy credentials?
3 @ Greenpoint-Gunner:
Hi Greenpoint Gunner, Ryno Eksteen is a young flyhalf from Pretoria that WP signed, former Affies (Pretoria) school boy who played in Craven week for Blue Bulls and was one of the stars in the 2012 Craven week. The Blue Bulls beat the Lions 47/0 in the final that year and if memory serves me right I heard he outplayed Handre Pollard in their game against WP at the tournament. He was top scorer in that Craven week too. As article says he was injured last year so it will interesting to see how he does and also that he seems to have been elevated straight into senior rugby with the Stormers.

4 @ Bullscot:
Greenpoint Gunner,
Ryno Eksteen is ‘n baie, baie belowende speler.
“Exchange students” it seems between WP and Bulle.
Don’t know this guy but looking forward to see him shine
So this Ryno Eksteen looks like he could also challenge for the SA no 10 spot in a few years, if he is as good as you guys make him out to be.
7 @ Lion4ever:
Proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof.
Ryno Eksteen certainly looked like a Springbok in the making in 2012, but then again so did Handré Pollard… and he’s battling to come through.
