Former Springbok lock Victor Matfield will make his return to the playing field for the Bulls in this year’s Super Rugby competition, a report indicates.
Die Burger newspaper was reliably informed by three credible sources that Matfield will play for the Bulls.
Sport24
Matfield was unable to grant an interview on Friday, but confirmed that the Bulls and the Springboks will release a join press release in due course.
Matfield, 36, retired from all forms of rugby after the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.
He was the Bulls’ lineout coach in recent years and has trained with the team in the last while.
He will use this year’s Super Rugby competition to try convince Bok coach Heyneke Meyer that he’s still good enough to play international rugby.
Matfield is eyeing the 2015 World Cup in England. He will by 38 years old by then.
Will be waiting for the official announcement but knew about this, also from the horse’s mouth (was told this was the case at the Bulls Media Year End Function in December).
Matfield wants a Bokke contract too, to make it worth his while…
Dumb move.

Well, I’m not so sure about Matfield’s return either, but if it works, then kudos to them and him.

My feeling is that once you go, GO!
He is / was the greatest 5 lock ever, why make a comeback and risk being schooled by a young PSDT or someone like that?
He is needed as the guys there is a bit green. If he lasts great, if he doesn’t he can teach them a lot on the field. I think this is limited to the Bulls set-up, he will not make it back at international level
If he wants to play again then fine. he MIGHT be able to offer some value. But its complete BS that he is insisting on a bok contract. Thats not cool Vicky.
Fully agree there – better that PsdT then yes.
He seems money hungry now
