All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, which is a separate issue from his Achilles injury.
rugby365
Carter limped from the field during New Zealand’s Test against England at Twickenham last month and All Blacks team doctor Tony Page said the 31-year-old was suffering wear and tear in his right Achilles tendon.
“Dan’s Achilles tendon has developed some wear and tear but it won’t require surgery which is good news.
“Separately from that, Dan has some bone spurs in the same ankle which need to be removed, so he will have an operation for that. This is similar to what he had done a few years ago,” Page said.
He partially ruptured his other Achilles tendon when playing for French Top 14 side Perpignan in 2009, but will have plenty of time to recover from his latest setback.
Carter has begun a six-month break from rugby and will not rejoin the Crusaders until July. He is guaranteed to be available for the seven-times Super Rugby champions after the All Blacks’ Test series against England in June.
“Once he has recovered from the bone spur operation, he will have a period of rest followed by gradual loading of the Achilles and calf to allow it to recover and repair ahead of his return to rugby,” Page said.
Funny old time for us here in the Southern Hemisphere… all we hear is about injuries, scheduled surgeries and some of our Southern Hemisphere players extending their rugby deals in Europe and the UK.
Dan Carter was always going to have a sabatical anyway in the first part of 2014… so he would not have played Super Rugby till July anyway.
He is really coming to the end of his illustrious career now, injuries happening more often and he seems to be injured and out more than actually playing.
Couple that to the continued rise of Aaron Cruden & Beauden Barrett (who I think is the best of the 3 at the moment) and one wonders if Carter will make it to the Rugby World Cup 2015.
Time to bid farewell to a wonderful player.Planned obsolescence playing it,s
part.

But I must say, I am freegin tired of this weather in Gauteng, that we’ve had for a month or so, raining every day
Hi All
I’m another defector from Keo.
I’m a staunch Bok, WP and Stormers supporter.
I don’t believe Morne is the answer at flyhalf but have no doubt HM knows what his doing.
12 @ Tuff Gong:
Welcome to Rugby-Talk, the Friendly Rugby Blog and web site.
2014 will be intersting, because we are bound to see the likes of Johan Goosen, Fred Zeilinga, Demetri Catrakilis, Pat Lambie & maybe a Lion or Bulls flyhalf sticking up their hands at flyhalf, amongst other positions.
My stance is that the Springboks have to start weaning themselves off their overseas contingent, because those players are not available for training camps and would join the Springboks just prior to Tests.
12 @ Tuff Gong:
We had an interesting discussion on the link: http://www.rugby-talk.com/2013/12/british-irish-lions-2013-squad-and-coach-gatland-honoured/
I got to hear about the Keo changes there, and there was some discussion on it.
@ grootblousmile:
Thanks.
I do feel Johan Goosen’s abilities have been romanticised, but I hope he gets through 2014 unscathed.
GBS, the jury is still out on the overseas vs local player.Habs and FDP are a must but the rest we can do without.
15 @ Tuff Gong:
Johan Goosen needs a year without injuries in 2014 in conjunction with stellar performances, I have started doubting him too.

Hello all and welcome aboard from me too, look forward to lots of comments from you folk sharing your rugby knowledge with us

Hey Tuff Gong you almost ruined it there saying you were a WP and Stormers supporter and that you didn’t think Mr Morne was the answer at flyhalf but redeemed yourself by saying at the end you have no doubt Mr Meyer knows what he is doing Jokes aside had the pleasure of meeting Mr Meyer when he was in Edinburgh the Friday before the Boks played Scotland and he was such a nice guy, so friendly and enthusiastic.
