Matt SextonThe exodus in Port Elizabeth continues with confirmation that Southern Kings coach Matt Sexton will leave the union and return to New Zealand this month.

Sexton, who joined the union in June 2012 to assist them in their preparations for their entry into Super Rugby, has decided to return home for personal reasons.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me, but due to personal reasons, I have had to make the difficult choice to return home to my family in New Zealand. The circumstances back home requires me to be there,” he said.

Sexton said that he was sad that his time with the union had come to an end.

“I have really enjoyed my stay in South Africa and working with the Southern and EP Kings over the past two years,” he said.

“There is definitely a wealth of talent in the region, and I am sure that EP Rugby will be making an impact on the world stage in the years to come,” he said.

Eastern Province Rugby Union CEO, Charl Crous, said that Sexton had been contracted with the union until the end of 2014, and had been looking to extend his contract through to 2015.

“Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, Matt’s time with EP Rugby has come to an early end, but we support him wholeheartedly with his move back to New Zealand.

“Matt has been a great asset to the union, and has brought a wealth of experience to the team.

“He has worked tirelessly over the past two years, and has managed to accomplish what few thought possible and played an integral part in the success of the Southern Kings in our debut season in Super Rugby,” said Crous.

Crous wished Sexton all of the best for his future, and was positive that he would be a great asset to any union who contracted him.

    4 & 5 @ grumpy:
Luke Watson to the Sharks… hell they have enough looseforwards and scrum inspectors as is!

Without Luke, let’s look at the Sharks situation…

Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel, Willem Alberts, Jean Deysel, Tera Mthembu and I think Ryan Kankowski probably too, plus some upcoming youngsters. That is already 6 plus some youngsters!

So where will Luke fit in and who would he be able to logically usurp or replace?

The regular loose trio would probably be Coetzee (openside), Alberts (blindside), Keegan Daniel (No 8), with Deysel on the bench and / or Tera on the bench.

If the Sharks are indeed looking at Luke, they are foolish!

Another thing… how injury prone has Watson become and how many games has he played in the last 3 seasons of rugby?

He is now a liability to have on your books, not an asset.
