Earl RoseForgotten Western Province and Lions utility back Earl Rose has been given another chance to resurrect his rugby career.

Rose, 29, has been out in the wilderness in recent years and currently plays for the Sir Lowrians Rugby Club near Somerset West.

His career has been blighted by off-field indiscretions, but he will now get another chance to impress on a big stage.

Rose will play for Western Province in next weekend’s Sevens Premier League in George.

WP’s sevens coach, Ricky Petersen, said Rose has enough talent to add value to the team but warned the player to keep his discipline off the field.

“Earl has a lot of experience. He’s lost 6kg in the two weeks he’s been here. He is ready to show that he still has a lot of rugby in him.

“I feel he needs another opportunity. (But) everything depends on his off-field discipline. So far it has been good. Sometimes players are just branded by bad characteristics and people don’t always know what good things they still have in them.”

Rose previously represented the Blitzbokke, WP, the Cats (in Super Rugby), Lions, Griquas and the Southern Kings.

He was also a Springbok squad member in 2008 and 2009 but never played a Test.

Meanwhile, WP are also hoping to utilise speedster player Cheslin Kolbe for the event but are still waiting for the go-ahead from the Springbok Sevens.

The tournament takes place at Outeniqua Park on 13 and 14 December.

Provisional WP squad: Ruan Mostert (captain), Clarence Hansen, Armien Bailey, Stefan de Villiers, André Smith, Iewan Bartels, Anthony Taylor, Rob Alers, Vivian Fredericks, Gerret Theron, Cheslin Kolbe, Earl Rose, Josh Bassingthwaighte.
