Lionel CronjéAnother South African is making his way accross to Australia to play Super Rugby! The Twitterverse reports that MTN Lions utility backline player, Lionel Cronjé, has signed and is is off to Canberra to join the Brumbies for next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Lionel Cronjé moved to the MTN Golden Lions with hopes of cracking the nod in the run-on side but has failed largely in 2013 to do just that, with Marnitz Boshoff and Elton Jantjies largely being preferred as starting options.

Cronjé, who mostly plays in the flyhalf berth is also at home at fullback and in the centres.

Lionel joined the Blue Bulls for the 2012 season from Western Province, then moved to the MTN Golden Lions for the 2013 season.

The 24-year old announced the news of his departure via his official Twitter account on Monday.

He tweeted:

(sic) Fotos done!sad to say cheers to all the lads today…as my stay at lions..is over..short lived but great experience!

Exciting new and exciting challenge..off to @s14_brumbies

Lionel never made it at WP, Blue Bulls and now also at the Golden Lions.

Do not think he can make a consumate flyhalf at the Brumbies either.

GBS, I think he started out at the Cheetahs no? Or at least, he was a FS schoolboy sensation.

Either way, I think he got too much attention when he first started, with SARugby Mag doing a cover story and what not. All that attention must have gone to his head.
He was even suspended by the ever-nice AC at the Stormers at a time when they were lacking talent at 10.

    That says a lot.

Conrad Hoffman has also signed for the Brumbies.

I think that both these are good players, Lionel Cronje and Conrad Hoffman. But they will never be great. They suffer a thing I call Willem de Waal syndrome. They will always be good and consistent but there will always be someone better than them.
