It is the small hours of the morning over here, and I am ready and waiting!
Reminds me of the time when my dad and I waited nervously in front of the old Pilot radio set at the kitchen table, trying to catch the 3rd test in the NZ 1965 series, while brewing coffee on the Aga in the kitchen.
I recall Gertjie Brynard scored two tries, and we won 19-16, having trailed 19-3 at half time. We woke up the neighbour, who dishearteningly went back to bed at the break, with our cheers at dawn!
Today’s forecast seems like a grim reminder of that that miserable, wet and cold day in 1965 when Tiny Naude kicked the winner with a muddy old leather ball that must have weighed something like 3 kgs, even hail predicted during the match.
It is going to be some of the same blood and mud stuff today,I fear…..but we have done it before, so GO BOKKE! Moer hulle!!!
It’s been like a couple of old heavyweights dealing with the patsies to set themselves up for the title fight.
You know the stakes are high when Dan Carter tells you it’s the biggest test since the world cup final – Conrad Smith, too.
These are level-headed veterans not in the habit of talking games up but they’ve been happy to attach extra significance to the year’s first meeting between the game’s superpowers.
If anything, the Springboks come in the most settled.
Coach Heyneke Meyer took a while to find his feet with this group but from about last year’s tour north, they appear to have found their rhythm.
The traditional virtues are still there – they hit hard up front, value their set pieces and fall back on the kick and chase game as their default setting – but there are signs of a greater desire, and, importantly, the skill, to play with ball in hand.
Jean de Villiers remains the glue of their backline but around him now are players such as Willie le Roux and JJ Englebrecht adding real cut and thrust.
The All Blacks have noticed.
From Stuff.conz
All week they’ve been talking about the “more well-rounded” Springbok game.
Adding to their anxiety is the absence of skipper Richie McCaw. His hard edge, if not his dynamic play, will be sorely missed.
It’s an All Black pack with some question marks hovering over it, which adds to the spice. Sam Cane deputises for McCaw – at 21 years old and 103kg, with just nine tests under his belt, it’s a serious step up in class for a guy who wasn’t even top choice for his Super franchise by season’s end.
Then there’s Hansen’s bold selection of Dane Coles at hooker.
Hansen has 184 tests of experience between Keven Mealamu and Andrew Hore but he gave the Wellingtonian the nod in what shapes as a pivotal outing.
You can be sure of one thing: the Boks will zero in on the greenhorn All Black forwards like a heat-seeking missile on its target.
“Both teams are playing pretty good rugby at the moment, and both camps have got a bit of confidence.
“As a team we know the challenge but we’re confident in our abilities and I think we can play a lot better than what we have done.”
The likelihood is that the All Blacks will have to.
The last time they ran out for a test of this magnitude at Eden Park, they were crowned world champions.
Tonight the reward will not be as lofty but equally hard-earned.
This is like a WC final, it is going to either free Heynecke Meyers hands or give the doomsayers a field day and a thousand questions. Hope we are sharp and accurate from the start.
@ superBul:
More, het jy my dankie-mail gekry op telkomsa, ook my boodskap op Cheetahs/Lions-garing?
@ Pietman:
Ja Dankie Pietman, kom jy terug SA toe?
Ek weet dit is nog rou en seer , as jy fotos wil he van ons trip in 2009 sal ek stuur, daar is so 4 of 5 mooi fotos
Het jy al iets van Deon gehoor?
The poor Aussies still hurts
Australian World Cup-winning captain Nick Farr-Jones says the Wallabies should be put on incentive contracts or take a 50 per cent pay cut if they deliver another ”debacle” on Saturday night.
One of Australia’s greatest halfbacks also backed the decision to dump Will Genia from the starting XV and hoped it would help the axed skipper ”snap out” of a form slump.
The Wallabies will attempt to end a four-game losing streak when they play Argentina in Perth. They have won only one of the past six Tests.
”Last Saturday [losing to South Africa 38-12] was an absolute debacle,” Farr-Jones said.\
”It’s a bit like our cricket team. We can play well for two-thirds of the game but in the one-third we play badly, it leaves us in a huge hole. For rugby to make money and be profitable right across the game you need the Wallabies to play well.
@ superBul:
Nog niks van Deon gehoor nie.
Ja, stuur fotos asb! Ek sal dit graag wil aanstuur huistoe en laat vergroot, hartlike dank ou maat.
Weet nie van teruggaan nie, enigste vlugte is more (vol) en Donderdag (te laat, begrafnis is Vrydag); werksituasie ook benard, so ek twyfel of ek sal wegkom.
Gelukkig was ek darem pas twee maande daar.
Morning everyone.
Are we all ready for the big game?
So nervous now hope we can win this one.
Good luck to Heyneke’s Springboks.
GO BOKKE GO!
Morning Pietman.
Condolences with regards to your Old Man!
@ superBul:

Ek wag vir McLook se update oor die weer.
@ Pietman:
“…MOET dit wen…”
I fear that we may be reading to much into one decent performance against a pretty shitty Aussie team.
When the Boks are talked up like this they often fail to deliver.
Keep it calm and keep it steady!
Go Springboks!
@ Loosehead:
Dankie Loskop, ek waardeer.
Hello all, hope the Boks pull off a good win here today, I guess any win be it by one point even will be great.
@ Puma:
History in the making bru, today is the faarkin day!!!!!!! GO BOKKE, take no prisoners, let’s go for it boys!!!!
It has been 76 years, enough, we say, go get them this time, moer hulle manne!!!!
@ Loosehead:
We MUST bore them into the mud up front, smother them…and tackle them backwards once they start running….. hard! Especially that mascara oke Nonu.
@ Pietman:

18 @ Pietman:
For sure boet. Just listening to Mallett, Mitchell, Owen, Naas and Ashwin in th studio. Have goosebumps before this game already… hahaha.
Nothing for me can compare to a Bok/Ab game. Just feels great to know this time round we can win it.
Piet I am feeling for you today boet. Just remember you have good friends here and we feel your pain. Time eventually will heal that pain. Takes a long time bru, I lost my pa when I was only 24. So understand how you feel.
Also the reason I am so passionate about the Boks/AB games. It was my pa that instilled the passion in me about these two great rivals. So I always think of him when our teams are about to go into battle.
@ Pietman:
Good morning Pietman, hope you are doing alright, really sorry to read of your loss, all the best take care ou maat.

@ Bullscot:
Thx bru, I tough one, I will miss my old ‘pal’ stacks, especially on rugby days, that’s all we talked about on days like these.
But he’ll be watching, I’m sure, he won’t miss this one even whilst in heaven!
13 @ Pietman:
They have had some rain on and off for much of the day in the Auckland area Pietman, probably frequent showers. At the moment it looks dry although am not sure exactly where the stadium is located but there are showers about at the moment just south of the city and various ones offshore so they may have a few of these sharp showers during the game. Temperature around 10 at the moment and a bit of a wind – 25 to 30 km/hr – which for us is nothing really but I guess it will be noticeable. Wind direction is from west or southwest, don’t know how exposed the ground is to wind from this direction.
More more!!!!!!!!!!
Kyk nou by my vensters uit. Lyk soos ‘n lekker dag vir boom klim en All Blacks breek.
Hey, ek het julle gegroet… donners…
@ Puma:
Yip, same here, my thoughts will be with him throughout the match, and therefore a win will be so much greater for me today.
@ grootblousmile:
Ons is besig, wag net bietjie…
