@117 superBul:
The answer is quite logical. WP has a very good defensive record this is true. Conceding minimal tries. But on the back of they, they almost never score more than 2 or 3 tries.
I recon a training week at WP is tackle training from Monday to Thursday. WP also never scores tries from set pieces. Most tries are individual brilliance. Aplon attacking from deep, Kolbe attacking from deep, JDV hitting a gap. Almost never a full backline move or set piece.
So due to the fact that they focus their game plan on defense their attack suffers due to this. If you can score 2 quick tries against WP/Stormers, you are likely to take a win, as they are unlikely to hit back so quickly as a team.
Take the Cheetahs for example. They have a relatively good defense. But they can also match any team try for try.
Take the Stormers in this years super rugby competition. 6 bonus points in total. None of them were for 4 tries. All of them were for losing by less than 7.
So all in all. When playing WP/Stormers, you will most likely not score 4 tries, but dont worry, they are also unlikely to score more than 3 tries against you.
FYI – I am a WP/Stormers supporter. So this has also been bugging me, as due to lack of bonus points we have suffered in the past. Same thing is happening now in the Curry cup. WP is on 24 log points. The Sharks on 19. If the Sharks win with a bonus point today they will be tied up with WP. The problem for WP in this scenario is that they are unbeaten, where the Sharks have already lost two games. So if WP do not score bonus points for 4 try wins, than they can be unbeaten in the Currie Cup and still find themselves in 3rd place, due to that bonus point scenario. Which WP have 0 bonus points in the Curry Cup this year.
WP = Marvelous defense – Poor attack.
The problem is, while JDJ and aplon score brilliant tries they throw away quite a few, aplon messed up a few tries in superrugby this year and last year with jdj because they are glory boys. Even last week vs the bulls, jdj had kolbe on the outside on the overlap… lets agree that equals a try… but no, jdj wants to sidestep everyone.
and then there is the forwards in the backline like bekker and Schalk the last few years, but they got replaced by Kitchoff, Elstadt and Fourie.
I am certain WP spend as much time on their attack as anyone in the competition.
Personally I think their forwards are great and their backline is great, it is just the combination of the two that is very painful too watch, last year they did well with a kick and chase plan where the speedy backline can chase and tackle.
When they get a good start where everything is working, then it all shifts, the forwards run in the backline and when the backline players get the ball then they don’t pass.
Was such a waste letting Marcel Brache go.
@ Timothy Bornman:
@125 Well said Tim, you hit the head on the nail, WP relying on ‘individual brilliance with almost no results (tries). Kolbe and Aplon need ‘linkmen’ to continue the moves. Every time they manage to link up with De Allende they are potent.
De Allende, now there is a prospect! Bliksem, daai ou is kookwater.
@ Pietman:
“,,,nail on the head”.
128 @ Pietman:
Howzit Piet,
Agree with you about De Allende. He is playing some terrific rugby.
