Cricket Scotland and the Scottish Rugby Union welcomed the Australian cricket team to Edinburgh on Tuesday ahead of the One Day International which is taking place at the Grange today.

Preston Mommsen (Scotland’s captain) said “It was great to have the SRU and the Hopetoun Cup at the Grange this morning, it’s a very impressive trophy! We are looking forward to welcoming the Australians here tomorrow and hopefully can emulate our rugby counterparts after they retained the cup in June 2012.
We wish them all the best at Murrayfield when the Australians come around on 29 November.”
Former Scotland stand-off Duncan Hodge was on hand with the Hopetoun Cup – which is presented to the winners between Scotland and Australia rugby matches – who also played cricket at under-19 international level for his country and was delighted to line up at the crease with cricket internationalists Preston Mommsen (Scotland, left) and Adam Voges (Australia, right).
Hodge said: “I absolutely love my cricket – with rugby I don’t get the time to play anymore but when I was younger I played as much cricket as rugby. I had to choose one and it happened to be rugby, when I was about 19.
“It’s great to see a team like Australia here in Scotland – I remember sitting here [The Grange] with my dad in 2005 and it tipped with rain the whole day so everyone’s just praying for a nice day tomorrow to get a full day’s cricket.
“I’m hoping to get down to the match tomorrow – I’ll be coaching most of the day but see if I can sneak down for half an hour!”

Scotland won the toss under cloudy skies and captain Momssen put Australia in to bat in what is now turning out to be a glorious early Autumn day in Edinburgh. Fawad Ahmed made his debut for Australia while Scotland’s Hamish Gardinder, who was born and went to school in Brisbane, got his first for Scotland.
It is currently the break between the two innings with the Australian batsmen having had merry and piled on the runs to set Scotland a daunting total. They ended their innings on 362/3 with Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh putting up the highest opening stand for Australia in this format of the game of 246. Finch scored 148 and Marsh 151 runs.
The only wicket takers for Scotland were Iain Wardlaw and Majid Haq, who both bowled their quota of 10 overs each and took 2/69 and 1/52 respectively.
View today from the Grange
Scotland
HJW Gardiner, FRJ Coleman, MW Machan, GD Drummond, RD Berrington, G Goudie, RM Haq, PL Mommsen (captain), CS MacLeod, D Murphy (wicket keeper), I Wardlaw.
Australia
AJ Finch, SE Marsh, SR Watson, MJ Clarke (captain), GJ Bailey, AC Voges, MS Wade (wicket keeper), Fawad Ahmed, MG Johnson, JP Faulkner, CJ McKay.
Its not going very for Scotland with their latest score 12/2 after 7 overs, they scored their first run in the 3rd over!
Coleman was the first to go for a duck lbw to Johnson and Gardiner the second for 1 lbw to McKay.
Its a pity Kyle Coetzer, Scotland’s regular captain, is not playing today because of a wrist injury. He must be Scotland’s premier batsman so would at least have helped Scotland to get a bit closer to Australia’s target.
A good decision for the crowd that Mommsen put Australia in to bat, because although it started cloudy and is now sunny – a good cricketing reason to want to bowl first, the game may have been finished a long time ago if Australia bowled first.
Meanwhile across the Irish Sea in Dublin Ireland put on a good score of 269/7 in their ODI against England. Porterfield top scored with 112, while the pick of ‘England’s’ bowlers was William (Boyd) Rankin who took 4/46 in 9 overs. Rankin born in Londonderry Northern Ireland used to play international cricket for Ireland.
Scotland 27/2 after 11 overs.
England are in trouble on 28/3 in the 11th over – was it such a good decision to rest so many top players…
Zimbabwean born Gary Balance was out for a duck, only faced two balls. Balance has been doing so well in county cricket and I had high hopes for him – so quite a disappointing start to his senior international career.
Ballance scored a century playing for the England Lions a few weeks ago.
Scotland 38/3 in 14th over, captain Mommsen latest wicket run out for 8.
@ Bullscot:
I see ireland made 269 vs england. a very competitive score and have england in early trouble.
Oh dear England 52/4 in the 16th over
Scotland 60/3 in the 19th over
Scotland 89/6 in the 22nd over
England 96/4 off 24 overs, need another 174 runs to win
England 126/4 after 29 overs, nice partnership now between Morgan and Bopara as fourth wicket fell on 48. 144 needed of 21 overs – looking far more attainable now – they should just treat it as a T20 game now.
Scotland 103/6 in the 33rd over
England 167/4 after 33 overs over need 103 to win
Scotland 112/7 after 36 overs
England 247/4 in 42nd over – 199 run partnership so far – England only need 23 runs to win
Australia beat Scotland by 200 runs. Scotland all out for 162 in the 44th over.
England beat Ireland by 6 wickets in the end got to 274/4 in the 44th over. Morgan 124 and Bopara 101 were not out
@ Bullscot:
thanks highlander
23 @ MacroBull:
Its a pleasure Macro, sorry I didn’t reply during the afternoon to your post about the England score, missed it somehow between updating the scores for both games. Glad we have another cricket fan on board.
22 @ Bullscot:
Morgan and Bopara put together a 5th wicket partnership of 226 unbeaten runs – this is the highest 5th wicket partnership in all ODIs!
Interesting to note that the two guys from Ireland and Northern Ireland were the best performers for England. Boyd Rankin getting his 4 wickets was top wicket taker for England and Eoin Morgan highest run scorer with his 124 runs.
