A host of players have signed with Griquas for the 2014 season, attracted by the lure of Super Rugby. The fact that relatively unknown players such as Lourens Adriaanse and Willie le Roux have experienced meteoric progress and been selected for the Springboks has enhanced the Griquas Union as a gateway to higher honours.
A Junior Springbok, a Varsity Cup star, three Blue Bull players and six other players have signed with Griquas. The signings are partly to offset the loss of Griquas stalwarts that have left for greener pastures, those being new Springbok Lourens Adriaanse, Edwin Hewitt and Justin Downey (all Sharks) and Willie le Roux (Cheetahs). Even though the replacements might not be high profile signings, they do add valuable depth to the Griquas squad.
The Junior Bok is the promising tighthead Nicolaas (Maks) van Dyk, the Varsity Cup star is the equally promising Tuks tighthead Stephan Pretorius. The Blue Bulls players on their way to Kimberly are Cornell Hess ( lock), Dustin Jinka and Ruan Snyman (both scrumhalves).
The other six players originate from Boland, Leopards, Pumas & EP Kings:
Boland – Jacquin Jansen (wing), Jonothan Francke (centre) and Ntando Kebe (scrumhalf).
Leopards – Danie Dames (fullback)
Pumas – Boela Serfontein (lock)
EP Kings – Wayne Stevens
Well done Griquas. Really impressed with their management.
@ MacroBull:
Got to applaud both Griquas and the Pumas for continually churning out competetive sides on shoestring budgets.
Lessons to be lerned there for some Unions methinks.
Nicely done Griquas!
… but flok, when will the player drainage stop at the Blue Bulls… enough is enough now!
No tight family unit anymore, something we were proud off
