Sharks Media Release

The Absa Currie Cup competition starts this Friday evening with The Sharks hosting Griquas at Growthpoint KINGS PARK in a Women’s Day spectacular for this opening clash.

Ladies receive free entrance tickets to the match (19:10 kick-off) as our way of saying ‘Thank You” for your wonderful support on this day commemorating the special efforts women make in the world today (tickets [scholars are also free] must be collected first, from The Sharks Ticket office or at Computicket outlets).

The Sharks team chosen for this opening clash is filled with household names, boasting plenty of experience at this level and higher, while Sizo Maseko, Marco Wentzel,  Edwin Hewitt and Rayno Gerber play their first Currie Cup matches in Sharks colours, with Hewitt having played a handful of Super Rugby matches and Maseko rewarded with his first senior cap.

Brynard Stander, a player in a similar mould to Marcell Coetzee, has been rewarded for impressing the coaches and he makes up a very effective loose-trio together with Jean Deysel and captain Keegan Daniel.

Butch James partners Charl McLeod and Tim Whitehead, a welcome returnee from injury will for a strong midfield duo along with Louis Ludik, with Odwa Ndungane completing a move to fullback where his experience, self-assured calmness and allround abilities of catching, kicking and running give The Sharks great impetus from the back.
