Hilton College confirmed the appointment on Twitter with a tweet reading: “Congrats to the 2 year former 1st XV coach and old boy Brad Macleod-Henderson (BMH) on his appointment as Sharks head coach for Currie Cup!”
Sharks CEO John Smit also commented on the appointment, tweeting a picture of himself and Hilton College headmaster PB Ducasse and saying: “Passed by Hilton College today to thank them for Brad, hopefully the start of good engagement with our Schools in KZN”
Macleod-Henderson takes over the reins from assistant coaches Hugh Reece-Edwards and Grant Bashford, who shared the head coaching responsibilities following John Plumtree’s controversial exit.
Sharks are taking a gamble, lets hope that it works out for them.
Unheard of, hope he is good for them. A bit like the Lions appointing Hans Coetzee after JW’s winning ways caused them to wield the axe a few seasons ago.
Here is a little more on the new Sharks Coaches.

Introducing the Coaches
With The Sharks players enjoying a brief respite from rugby, the new coaching staff are hard at work behind the scenes planning their Absa Currie Cup campaign which kicks off on 9 August.
CEO John Smit has introduced a completely new and innovative coaching set-up, opting to freshen up what happens at The Sharks in their bid to be the leaders and to enjoy on-going success.
He has appointed Brendan Venter as Director of Rugby and he will play a hands-on role, attending every practice and every match as he oversees the coaching of the team. Brad Macleod-Henderson has been appointed Forwards Coach and Sean Everitt Backline Coach.
Bulls Under 19 coach Paul Anthony – who has enjoyed great success in Pretoria – will join the Sharks’ coaching team at the end of 2013 for next year’s Super Rugby tournament.
Macleod-Henderson, the former Sharks loose-forward, coached College Rovers during a very successful period in their history between 2009 and 2011, before taking up a coaching position at Hilton College in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, together with Sean Everitt, he was involved in The Sharks Under 21 campaign.
“It’s a great opportunity, a great honour and something I’m really looking forward to,” Macleod-Henderson says.
With a new coaching set-up, some changes will be implemented, although a complete overall in playing style and preparation is certainly not on the cards.
“The game is always evolving, always changing, so it’s important to stay abreast of developments in the game,” he adds. “It’s also important to look at your personnel and get the best out of your players which is an eclectic mix of what you have and how you see the game going.
“We get going next week with the players, we will maintain things that have worked well, look to simplify things a bit and make sure that everyone understands one hundred percent what their roles and responsibilities are and create an environment where the players are happy and can play their best rugby.”
Backline coach, Sean Everitt, admits that he’s looking forward to the campaign ahead. “It’s a very exciting opportunity for me, it’s going to be challenging, but that’s what coaching is all about. Obviously it’s everyone’s ambition to get to the top and being involved with The Sharks now is a realisation of that goal. I’m looking forward to working with some of the guys I worked with in the past.”
Everitt has coached at Under 19, Under 21 and Vodacom Cup level at The Sharks for a number of years and was brought into the 2008 campaign that ended with a Currie Cup title for The Sharks.
“The Currie Cup has a lot of tradition and there is a plenty of pride at stake when teams play in this competition. There is a lot for The Sharks to gain in winning The Currie Cup. I was lucky to be involved in 2008 when The Sharks beat the Bulls in the final and I saw the effect it had on the city, so we’re under no illusions as to how important it is.”
He admits to being excited about the campaign ahead. The Sharks will have enjoyed a bigger break than last year, where they competed in the Super Rugby Final one week and the next were taking on Western Province in their opening Currie Cup match. Freshness is certain to count in their favour.
“The squad we have at our disposal is going to be good, it’s certainly strong enough to compete for a final berth at the end of the campaign. It’s a good mixture of youth – which obviously brings a lot of excitement – and experience.”
No surprise that Venter will be at all the practice games and have a more hands-on roll. Read that in the papers this past weekend. Also that BMC will the Forwards Coach and not the head coach as we all thought. Everitt the backline coach. Also the Bulls u19’s coach to join up with Sharks at the end if this year for the Super Rugby Season. Intersting that.
Just hope it all works out for my team. Really can not judge these coaches just yet, have to give them some time to see what they can deliver.
PSDT STAYS WITH THE SHARKS….. Punched my fists in the air when I read that….. Brilliant, brilliant news. Has signed another 2 years with Sharks.
Well done Smitty.
Now to get Bissie to sign as well. Think Ludik has already signed with a French club from what I have reat in articles in the papers from Greenaway. Really hope he is wrong and we can still get Ludik to sign with Sharks for next year. Or get Cheslin Kolbe Smitty. 🙂
