Go England
Ashton Agar may make his debut for Australia today – he is a 19 year old left arm ‘orthodox’ spinner who has been fast tracked through the system into the Ashes squad.
Ashton Agar has only played 10 first class games for Western Australia, taking 31 wickets at an average of 29.38, strike rate of 55.4 and economy rate of 3.18. He seems a useful option with the bat as well, with a top score of 71 not out and an average off 33.60. Obviously this is a lower level than international level but will be interesting to see if he is included how we gets on.
England have won the toss and chosen to bat with Alistair Cook and Joe Root in first. Wonder if this was such a good decision as may be tricky for a bit under the cloudy skies in Nottingham.
Ashton Agar is in the Australian team for this test. Congratulations on debut to him! He was handed his cap by Glen McGrath.
The teams for this test: England: A Cook (capt), J Root, J Trott, K Pietersen, I Bell, J Bairstow, M Prior, S Broad, G Swann, S Finn, J Anderson.
Australia: S Watson, C Rogers, E Cowan, M Clarke (capt), P Hughes, S Smith, B Haddin, P Siddle, J Pattinson, M Starc, A Agar.
So its Steven Finn instead of Tim Bresnan.
No David Warner for Australia
England being let off the hook a bit at the moment with some wayward bowling by Pattinson, wide first ball and bye second ball well down the leg side
England 2/0 after 1 and a half overs. Wild first over from Pattinson, batsmen only decided to put bat on ball 1 out of the 7 bowled. Seems like there is swing so Australia must bowl straighter and fuller, otherwise they are just giving England time to get their eye in…
England 6/0 after 2 overs Cook 4, Root 0
Much better, a maiden over for Pattinson, England 6/0 after 3 overs
England 16/0 after 5 overs and 1 ball, Cook 6, Root 8
England 69/1 after 19 and a half overs Root 26, Trott 24 at the crease
England lost some wickets latest score 148/4 in the 42nd over with Bell 12 and Bairstow 14 at the crease.
Batsmen out : Cook 13, Root 30, Trott 48, Pietersen 14.
Siddle has already taken 3 of the wickets with Pattinson getting the other
England all out for 215, not very good considering Cook won the toss and decided to bat
Top scorer for England was Jonathan Trott with 48, next best Jonny Bairstow 37. Best bowler Peter Siddle with 5/50 in 14 overs, Pattinson got 3/69 in 17.
First two wickets down, Australia 19/2 in 3 overs and for balls. Watson out for 13 and Cowan out for a golden duck. Finn on a hattrick!
From cricinfo : The crowd is jumping…here’s Finn
3.5 Finn to Clarke, no run, how close! Millimeteres from an Ashes hat-trick. Ideal delivery, pitched up on off stump, Clarke goes for the drive and it just misses the outside edge.
Australia 31/3, men at the crease Chris Rogers and Steven Smith both on 9. Captain Clarke out for a duck bowled Anderson, he faced 6 balls.
Australia consolidating a little, 53/3 in the 15th over
Another wicket in the cricket Rogers gone for 16. Australia 55/4 in 16th over now. Steven Smith 23 and Phillip Hughes 2 at the crease.
Australia 62/4 in the 17th over, minimum 12 overs left in the day after this one.
Australia 75/4 at close of play on end of day one in reply to Englands 215 all out
Strange day out there. I’ve missed all of it, unfortunately. I would have expected more from England. Was it the pitch? Were England too cocksure going into this one? I will hopefully be able to spend a bit more time with one eye on it tomorrow.
Thanks, Bully, for the updates
26 @ Just For Kicks:
Kickers… sorry my bloody Skype was offline… I have some time now… not tomorrow because the funeral is tomorrow…
… and I have the hard task to do the tribute speech as well as to thank everybody in church tomorrow. To speak in public is fine, I’m used to it, in fact I generally enjoy that type of thing, but to speak with a lump in your throat the size of a maxi-brick about someone you loved and respected is an honour… but a difficult honour…
26 @ Just For Kicks:
Pleasure JFK, didn’t get to see any of it just followed it. But it was a cloudy day so there was swing out there and some really good bowling especially by Siddle, but think some of the bowling was also quite wayward especially from Pattinson early on. You can see quite a few of the England guys got themselves in but then instead of pushing on went out, seems like many of them were not patient enough and played reckless shots, chasing bowls outside off that were swinging further away and getting edges etc.
27 @ grootblousmile:
Thinking of you all tomorrow ou pel, you hold your head high I’m sure you will do it justice.
Unfortunately won’t be able to update as much of the cricket tomorrow.
