SA RugbySpringbok coach Heyneke Meyer has announced his Springbok squad for the 2013 June Internationals.

The surprise inclusions are Lourens Adriaanse, Trevor Nyakane and Bjorn Basson.

The surprise omissions are Raymond Rhule, Robert Ebersohn, Ryan Kankowski and Elton Jantjies.

Nine uncapped players, six of whom have not been part of the national set-up before, have been included in a 34-man Springbok squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series involving Italy, Samoa and Scotland later this month.

The six newcomers are the GWK Griquas duo Lourens Adriaanse and Willie le Roux, Trevor Nyakane and Pieter “Lappies” Labuschagne of the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, and two members of last year’s Junior World Championship-winning SA Under-20 squad, Jan Serfontein (Vodacom Blue Bulls) and Pieter-Steph du Toit (The Sharks).

The three other uncapped players in the squad are Siya Kolisi (DHL Western Province), Arno Botha and Jano Vermaak (both Vodacom Blue Bulls). Two players who only featured in one Test in 2012, Gio Aplon (DHL Western Province) and JJ Engelbrecht (Vodacom Blue Bulls), are recalled following very good performances this year.

DHL Western Province midfielder Jean de Villiers, the most experienced member of the squad with 84 Test caps retains the captaincy.

Players who were part of Springbok squads in 2012, but were not considered for selection due to injury, are JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said the inclusion of the six newcomers was just reward for good performances in Vodacom Super Rugby this season. He also said he was happy to keep the core of the squad that did duty for South Africa in 2012.

“The Tests in June will be tough and we’ve been hit by a number of injuries, but I’m very happy with the squad we’ve selected,” said Meyer.

“It’s never easy selecting a squad such as this one, as there are always players who are unlucky to miss out, but there will always be an opportunity to reclaim your place, as Gio and JJ had shown this season.

“Despite not playing for one of the five big unions, Lourens and Willie have grabbed their opportunities when they got a chance to play Vodacom Super Rugby, while two of their team mates at the Toyota Cheetahs, Trevor and Lappies, have also done very well this year.

“It was also good to see Jan and Pieter-Steph make the step up from the junior levels. I’ve always rated them and they’ve shone this year for the Vodacom Bulls and The Sharks.

“To have 34 players available for this series will help a lot and I have a lot of appreciation to the leadership of SARU and the provincial CEOs for allowing us this number.”

The Springbok squad will assemble in Durban on Sunday. The first Test of the Castle Later Incoming Series is next Saturday at Growthpoint Kings Park against Italy.

Meyer has spread his net wide in an endeavour to use the series as an opportunity to fully assess his options ahead of the Rugby Championship that takes place later in the year by calling up 34 players for the three matches against Italy in Durban next Saturday, Scotland in Nelspruit the week after and one of those two or Samoa in Pretoria seven days after that.

He was initially expected to name only 30 or 32, but managed to get permission from the franchise chief executives to call up an additional two players, thus enabling him to use the series as a form of extended trial. However, he has the core of the team that played for him last season together again, so he has the comfort of being able to try newcomers around experienced players who are now used to playing his game.

As ek HM is, kies al die nuwe en jong spelers teen Italie, laat hul kan jol en ervaring optel in die groen trui.

  • 13

    12 Bulls – 5 forwards, 7 backs
    8 Sharks – 6 forwards, 2 backs
    6 Stormers – 2 Forwards, 4 backs
    6 Cheetahs (4 Free State Cheetahs, 2 Griquas) – 5 forwards, 1 back
    2 Overseas players – 1 forward, 1 back

    @ grootblousmile:
Hy was Varsity Cup speler van die jaar toe hy Matie-kaptein was, blykbaar moerse sterk, hy en sy broer beide, daar uit die N.Boland se wereld, die Adriaanses. @ smallies:

  • 15

Niks teen Adriaanse nie, net verbaas oor sy insluiting, het nie gedink hy was in HM se planne nie.

Werner en Kirsten het baie beter geskrum, Dean moet gebruik word as impakspeler.

An omission that might surprise some is that of Cheetahs centre Robert Ebersohn, but he probably lost out because incumbent outside centre Juan de Jongh was declared fit and Serfontein, who was in good form in Bloemfontein on Saturday, was preferred to him. De Jongh had been doubtful as he has been out injured recently.

  • 17

So, hoe gaan HM se span lyk teen Italie ?

  • 18

    @ Pietman:
kort bonkig en flokken sterk, soos n vaskop moet wees

  • 19

    @ Pietman:
Of nee jammer, anders om, sy broer Kobie was Varsity Cup/Maties.

  • 20

    @ Pietman:
lourens was maties cappie gewees voor hy griquas toe is

  • 21

    @ smallies:
Soos Rampie Stander, Hempies, Domkrag, Tommie, ja…

  • 22

    Nogal interessant… baie blerrie interessant….

  • 23

Ek het nie juis klagtes oor die squad nie…. Brussow was besonder stil vandag… en Francois Lous is daar as fetcher…

  • 25

    @ grootblousmile:
Weet ook nie van Pienaar nie. Kokkott tans hier tv vir Castre, speel baie goed daar.

  • 26

    @ ben-die-bul:
Ja, Werner, Dean en Kirsten beslis ongelukkig. HM was dalk bang vir te veel Bulle innie span, hehehe!

  • 27

Die beste 15 uit hierdie lot kan dalk soos volg lyk vir my (my keuses):

    15 Zane Kirchner
    14 Willie le Roux
13 Jean de Villiers / JJ Engelbrecht
    12 Jan Serfontein
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Morné Steyn
    9 Jano Vermaak
    8 Pierre Spies
    7 Arno Botha
    6 Francois Louw
    5 Juandré Kruger
    4 Eben Etzebeth
    3 Jannie du Plessis
    2 Adriaan Strauss
1 Coenie Oosthuizen / Beast Mtawarira
