There is a reason so many people were supporting Maties against Tuks, myself a UCT student fan and it was not a passion for that maroon jersey, believe me. It was because a victory for Maties would have meant a victory for the true values of the Varsity Cup, born out of pure passion for their University and a passion for their jersey. These were true Varsity heroes that would be back in lectures come Tuesday afternoon, not provincial players getting match practice ahead of their season.

    @ Bliksem:
    I agree 100%
I recall Jannie Engelbrecht in his maroon CV Valiant, all the way from the farm at Vredendal, three times a week for rugby practice and on match days.I don’t think he even knew where the lecture halls were! And Boland Coetzee, Piet du Plessis (lecturer) and a few others as well.
Ikeys were all bona fide students at that time, e.g. I remember Peter Whipp having to get special permission as an article clerk to play for Ikeys whilst doing his LLB part-time.
