Coach John Plumtree has opted for continuity and kept the exact same squad of 22 players for their encounter with the Stormers in Durban on Saturday. In the only change within that squad, strongman Jean Deysel will be starting this week with Jacques Botes moving to the bench.
The Sharks:
- 1. Tendai Mtawarira, 2. Craig Burden, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 4. Anton Bresler, 5. Franco van der Merwe, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 7. Jean Deysel, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 9. Cobus Reinach, 10. Patrick Lambie, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 12. Francois Steyn (Captain), 13. Paul Jordaan, 14. JP Pietersen, 15. Louis Ludik
- Replacements: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Wiehahn Herbst, 18. Pieter-Steph du Toit, 19. Jacques Botes, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Meyer Bosman, 22. Odwa Ndungane
Are the Sharks supporters going to count chickens again before they hatch… on another thread I see Sharkie_Fornever doing it already.
Hou die perde vas, die wa is nog nie mooi vas nie, boeties!
Good side, great depth though….
Where is puma when I need him
Starting to look forward to this match, sinse so many of the Sharks is so cock sure of the outcome, like last year
Good to see Plum keeping consistency here, though I am not sure of leaving Botes on the bench. He played really well last week. Though I rate Deysel plenty more like a Alberts player so probably with Vermeulen and Elstadt in the Stormers loosies Plum wanted to go with a bigger ball carrier here.
See Odwa on the bench again, now truly hope that Mvovo can play the full 80min on Saturday he was really good against the Cheetahs and once he came off that is when we fell back with Odwa there. Though have to say Odwa hardly has let his team down before that though, so hoping if Odwa does come on he is back to his best. Otherwise no weakness in this side.
GO MY SHARKIES GO!

Which Sharks supporters are showing arrogance here? Only Sharky and I that are Shark supporters here so not really sure where you coming from with that statement, as none of us have said we will win this. For me anything can happen on the day. It is a 50/50 game here who will win. Stormers have a excellent side and no ways will we rock up thinking we will just go on to win it. Also there is rain forecast and that alone most definitely makes it anyones game.
2 @ Sharks_forever:
Are they givin you uphill here bro? Just sort em out okay….hehehe.
Jeez been so busy today had no chance at all to look in here. Finally a bit of time to relax.
Pleased Plum is keeping with consistency, though he has gone with Deysel. Not 100% sure about that as Botes was really good last week.
6 @ Puma:
Typical only post a few times and already a typo….hehehe.
givin = giving

Easy now, there are more than you two decent oakes out there, I am surrounded by about 15 at work, know a further 30 odd and the forums are filled with them
Should have said in general, my bad, sorry
@ superBul:
Exactly, the Stormers can’t score enough tries to get to 50 points.
I wonder where R. Viljoen is? One bit of worry here is if Ludik picks up a injury then we will no doubt see Pat go to Fullback and Bosman come on at fh. That would be a shame again to mess Lambie about, so just wonder why we have not covered ourselves on the bench with a FB? I know Odwa can play there, but somehow doubt he will if we lose Ludik to injury it will be Pat shifted about. So Sharky if you reading here where is Viljoen these days?
@ Loosehead:
Looking at the Bulls I would not be laughing at the Stormers and their try scoring capabilities as the Bulls couldn’t even score 1. Only one they got was the one Peyeper gave them American footy style.

Sharks
Last week, up against their supposed “bogey” team (to whom they haven’t lost in 5 matches), the Sharks duly arrived, conquered and left with a win. They were surprisingly effective and well drilled for a first round game which would’ve restored a bit of faith in the hometown support. Pat Lambie appears to be as settled as ever and is now pretty much the commander-in-chief of the backline – the Sharks will be happy to have finally found a genuine number 10 who is less than 86 years old. On top of that, Cobus Reinach is doing an excellent job of keeping Charl McCleod out of the starting XV which will be pleasing for Sharks fans. Frans Steyn made an immediate impact in midfield where it often took more than 1 defender to bring down the 25 year old multi-millionaire. It could be said that he’s also making an impact on the food bill for the Sharks – the burly centre is looking rather heavy, although he has lost 8 kilos of hair.
Fans from the sunshine city will also be happy about the way that the beef up front executed their set pieces with a certain amount of dominance and will be probably even more delighted that there was a functioning lineout. Franco Van Der Merwe’s presence has been duly noted. Elsewhere on the field, Marcel Coetzee was destroying everything from defenders to entire rucks –he truly is a man possessed and probably suffers from A.D.D. and he was kind enough to reward Fantasy managers with a 5 pointer last weekend. Rounding up the Sharks collective, the outside backs had a solid outing but ultimately, it was Lwazi “Mvroom Vroom” Mvovo that bagged a 5 pointer and continued with his try-scoring antics – such a prankster. The Sharks would’ve been happy with the way they handled business last weekend and they will look to wrap up another day at the office when they run out onto home turf this weekend.
Stormers
High expectations but ultimately a rather misdirected performance – the Stormers were their own worst enemy last weekend and it didn’t help that Elton “The Hairstyle” Jantjies wouldn’t even have been able to kick an elephant in the ass. He had an atrocious kicking performance that was topped off by an even worse performance in general play. Elton is a confidence player and at the moment, it’s not there which could be a risk on Saturday. With their flyhalf misfiring, the rest of the backline had no chance. The good news is that Jantjies is very inconsistent so there is the possibility he has a good game.
Damien de Allende had a number of barn-wrecking runs but , he needs to learn to pass. The Stormers backline was so neutralized last weekend that we even forgot thatGio Aplon was on the field except for when he got taken off. Up front, the Stormers will look to their bulky loose trio to set up a platform which will give the backs an opportunity to do a bit of on-field tango. Siya Kolisi, Rynhardt Elstadt and Duane Vermeulen are 3 seriously big humans who can do some serious damage – watch this space.
The Stormers have lost an ace in Jaco Taute who is having some problems with his “man parts” but they have gained an ace in Peter Grant who is starting on the bench but rest assured – if Jantjies has a repeat performance of last week, Grant will be on the field in a matter of minutes. The Stormers have got the firepower but they need to find a way to put it all together – a six shooter is useless if you only have 2 bullets!

more,
The History
The tale of this tape is as tight as Piri Weepus rugby Jersey last season. 18 matches between these 2 and 9 wins a piece – that says it all! The Sharks have won 5 at home and 4 away from home so there isn’t too much to read into here – to make it more interesting, the average score line between the 2 teams is 22-20 in favour of the Stormers and these teams have had 11 matches that have ended with a margin of 7 or less!
Prediction
This game is hard to predict but regular readers will find it much easier to predict who we’re going with on this one. You may not buy it but we’ll try rationalize our decision anyway, based on form from last weekend, the Stormers are not looking good and at the end of the day, the Sharks seems to be sitting with 1 or 2 more chips in their poker stack. SHARKS to find some retribution for the Currie Cup final!
Margin
Less than 7 – these teams are both well poised and there will be no run away victory.
