Patrick LambieI am thrilled with the win against tough opponents in such testing conditions Sharks coach John Plumtree admitted after his team’s 29-22 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. “We just had to get the win, even if it was ugly he said.

He was quoted as saying “we were very nervous about this match as we did not get everything out of our pre-season games, the players are just very happy to start with the win which will without doubt give them confidence going forward.”

“I was concerned about our ability to attack and defend for long periods. We were pretty knackered in the second half and I hope we will be better off when we play the Stormers in round two. There is lots of work to do.”

One could see both teams were rusty and so it is understandable that it was not the perfect game by any means and as the game ebbed and flowed. It showed that both teams had a lot to work on before their next encounters. ”The Sharks will face the Stormers in their next match so hard work awaits us he said.”

“We were pretty inaccurate and sloppy at the breakdown in the first half and we didn’t keep them under pressure which was pretty frustrating because it is such an important area. We also coughed up possession when we should have been getting points and that was the message at half-time – to keep the ball and we would be all right.”

Coach Plumtree had lots of praise for Vodacom Man of the Match, Pat Lambie, who delivered a faultless display of kicking, converting all seven attempts at goal and marshalling general play with a mix of tactical kicking and a good running and passing game.

“I thought he was outstanding, in his kicking at posts and in his long kicking game,” said The Sharks coach. “He did everything right in this game and he is benefiting from having experienced guys alongside him, JP on his inside and Frans outside him. He is definitely on track and he’s going to get better and better.”

He also had words of praise for the players who came off the bench and contributed at a time when The Sharks were under a lot of pressure. “The fresh legs at the end made a huge impact. Meyer Bosman made one try-saving tackle, Jean Deysel did some really big things as did Pieter-Steph du Toit. The bench was important and I thought our scrum was outstanding.”

“The lineout was also pretty good. The two hookers have worked hard with Franco van der Merwe.”

The good news on the injury front was that there were no concerns to come out of the game. “There were a couple of hard knocks and bruises and Lwazi Mvovo had to come off but everyone should be ready next weekend.”

He also praised the Cheetahs for their fighting spirit and coming close to winning the game after being down 21-5. ”I was getting ready to prepare for a losing speech”, he said. “There is no doubt the Cheetahs will be winning many games this season.”

Only because he had to play that daft daft game plan. Now he is getting the kicking right he will be just fine.

Remember he was our best flyhalf that played for Boks last year.

@GBS – the only reason Lambie was ok in a Bok jersey is because of the scrummie he was paired with and his style of rugby not fitting the HM’s ethos.

    thats just my opinion Approve

So reading Sports24 it looks like Fransie and Jean might face each other in the 12 jersey in the Derby game in Durbs this week. That is if JdJ is ready to play it seems.

Have to enjoy Fransie as captain. When asked about Sharks to play Stormers this weekend he just said, “I can’t wait” hehe 🙂 Another captain would say we probably have to up our game or something, not our Fransie he just says it as he feels. Like a breath of fresh air as a captain I think. I certainly like him as captain so far.

If he has to face Jean well I personally think Fransie will win that battle.

Sorry Puma just had to run some errands only now back and seen your comment, looking good this side thanks mate, sun is shining so its really nice out there will go out walk dog soon, but chilly but I just love it when the sun shines. Plus it was a good weekend results wise with Bulls and Boks winning and the Proteas and my football team, also was a good result for the team from here you favour Glasgow Warriors who beat Ruan Pienaar’s Ulster, if you can try find on youtube sometime the 4th try that Glasgow scored – it was by Matawalu and was a super try, Glasgow are playing such a good brand of rugby at the moment and that without many of their top players who are with Scotland.
Anyway back to the flyhalves for you and Sharkie thought I would be cheeky and throw that comment in there but come on we all know that last year Morne just had a wee dip in form so Lambie and others got to keep the jersey warm for him, Steyn is back this year and so surely the others will have to fight it out for a bench spot where they can watch and learn from a master and occasionally come on and see if they can emulate him Happy-Grin

think the steyn jordaan combo is the best 12 13 combo in sa at the moment

Just reading SW and see Taute to miss this game this weekend after taking a hit to the groin in the Bulls game.

I don’t think it is a loss really, as I said on the Stormers thread earlier today, I would have had Taute on the bench and start with Joe as Joe can cover Jantjies with goal kicking.

Poor Taute though, he gets over one injury and into another.

I think so too. They will get a lot better as the season goes. That is if none pick up injuries.

Bulls should be playing Serfontein. Said so last week here already when they selected their team last week.

  • 81

    @ Bullscot:
die enigste mnr daar is mnr serfontein maar frans,ek is verlief op olivier, ludeke wil hom nie kies nie….

  • 82

    51 @ Puma:
Oh dear that’s not good news Puma, especially Potgieter and Stegmann, hopefully they recover in good time.

  • 83

    @ Puma:
serfontein venter or serfontein small-smith or serfontein mapoe

  • 84

    83 @ smallies:
Serfontein with Mapoe or Small-Smith would be a great centre pairing for Bulls.

    82 @ Bullscot:

Well so far that is what Sports24 has on the injury list. Wait and see later this week.

  • 85

I am always pleased once we have the Derby games out the way. That is where we pick up most our injuries to all our teams here.

  • 86

    81 @ smallies:
🙂 ja klink my Serfontein is goed miskien is die form kombinasie senter Serfontein/Venter teen die einde van die seisoen, as JJ Englebrecht uit is vir die volgende game soos Puma hierbo gese het was my eerste gedagte dat Ludeke Venter sal begin op senter and Serfontein op die bank, maar nou dink ek weer daar oor sal dit dalk Mapoe wees wat senter toe skuif.

Hey Puma I found footage of Matawalu’s try for Glasgow against Ulster I spoke about just above, its probably best to start it around 1 hour 31minute mark to see the build up, was just some aimless kicking from both teams and then just out of nothing the try was made, Peter Horne started it with a run and a pass to Matawalu who passed a great flick pass on and then just at the end was on hand to pick up the ball and dart through for the try, just a pity Peter Horne missed the conversion from right in front, would have denied Ulster a losing bonus point and would have meant only 2 points instead of 3 between Ulster who are 1 and Glasgow 2 at the moment, anyway here is the link:

Congratulations to the Sharkies, a good win to start the comp. but lots to improve on.

Lambie had a great kicking game, didn’t impress the socks off me in his tactical play where Morne had the edge this weekend IMO.

This was in some respects a lucky win for the Sharks, you guys know what I mean, I expected them to do better to be honest. They will get better though.

Jordaan has some serious pace, but needs to work on his distribution a bit. If he can sort that out he will be the preemminent 13 in SA in no time at all.

Botes had a great game, good on Plum for picking him and leaving Deysel on the bench.

Burden’s throwing in was fine, he’s obviously worked on this. we will be under pressure this weekend at the lineouts for sure.

    73 @ Bullscot:
Its great when the sun is out there, with the cold crisp wind blowing on your face with a warm scarf around your neck. I love those conditions a lot and sometimes wish I could be there.

My mate went to the Celtic game yesterday and sent me a sms straight after the game. Won 5 zip. So pleased about that too.

Will try and get a clip of Glasgow Warriors. Pleased they playing well. We don’t get much of their games here.

Well I think if Lambie can stay injury free and keep playing well this season, my feeling Meyer will go with him as first choice fh as he is young and can be playing for Boks a long time yet. Pat is consistently good and I think Meyer wants that in his flyhalf. Time will tell. Goosen and Elton could have blinders this season as well. Morne will be there too for now, doubt he will be around for next year somehow. So it will be they younger ones Meyer will look to this year and I really do think it will be Pat. He is really mature beyond his years and I somehow think Meyer likes that in him as a player and the really cool head.
