Alister Coetzee has confirmed that Schalk Burger and Juan De Jongh have been sidelined with injury and will miss the opening match against the Bulls.
The Stormers training camp on Monday had a few “walking wounded” after Saturday’s narrow loss against the Cheetahs.
Michael Rhodes has a slight hamstring strain which will leave him out of training this week, whilst Gio Aplon and Jaco Taute both missed today’s training session due to the ‘Flu.
Of the two injuries, De Jongh’s hamstring injury appears to be the more concerning as it is “worse than a grade 1” according to Coetzee. Burger aggravated a calf strain but should not be out for more than 2 weeks.
Promising young player JP du Plessis has injured his lower back and will be out of action until April at least.
On a positive note, Deon Fourie should be available to play this weekend against Boland. Coetzee is likely to play the remaining Stormers players who have not yet received game time this weekend. The squad will be looking to put in a strong performance against Boland with several positions still up for grabs.
The team announcement will be made on Wednesday.
Not good news.
I wonder if we will see Jaco Taute run out at 13 this weekend.
We’ll know tomorrow. Brian Habanna was trialled at 13 a few times last year, There is De Allende i guess, but I think that JP du Plessis was the back up at 13, so his injury isn’t great.
The good news is that Elstadt will play this weekend along with Kolisi and Vermeulen as the likely back row, which is a really good combo. With Deon at 2 the fetching duties should be well taken care of.
@ Stormersboy:
😆 why? was Taute that shit at 15 last weekend? so the need to move him??
@ Sharks_forever:
The question is rather who will play 13 this weekend since Juan is injured. Taute plays there for the Boks so AC may just give him a run. We have Joe Pieterson at 15 so that position has more options available than 13 at the moment.
I guess we’ll see tomorrow when he announces the squad 🙂
