RaboDirect PRO12 balls 5/8/2011Despite their loss to Munster at Thomond Park last Saturday, Ulster remain clear at the top of the Pro12 table as we start the New Year.

Ulster have a nine-point lead over second placed Scarlets, who they welcome to Ravenhill on Friday.

rugby365

That is just one of four games on Friday, two in Scotland and one in Wales, as the teams leave behind the festive local derbies and once more take to the road.

Edinburgh welcome Irish opposition in the form of European champions Leinster, whilst fourth placed Glasgow Warriors face Benetton Treviso at Scotstoun knowing the Italians defeated them on their last trip to the city.

The fourth game on Friday sees the second Italian outfit, Zebre, who are still looking for their first win in the tournament, take on champions Ospreys at Liberty Stadium.

There are two games on Saturday, both in Ireland, for Connacht and Munster.

Newport Gwent Dragons travel to Galway to take on Connacht, while the round wraps up in Cork on Saturday when Cardiff Blues will be hoping to improve on their record when travelling to play Munster as they have not won in the province since 2007.

Ulster stand-in captain Chris Henry admits he is relishing the chance to get 2013 going with a bang as the Pro12 leaders bid for glory on two fronts.

Henry’s troops return to Pro12 action on Friday, having lost their first league match of the season – against Munster in the absence of a number of first-team players.

On Friday they will look to get back to winning ways against the second-placed Scarlets before looking to reach the knock-out stages of the European Cup.

And Henry cannot wait for this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash.

“It couldn’t be any better at the start of the new year, first against second,” Henry told the Irish Independent.

“I suppose it will be a good time to meet them after their big defeat against the Ospreys and they will be hurting. They have had a bit of a dip the way we had ours in Italy.

“They will be desperate to get the points and obviously we will be desperate to keep or extend the nine-point lead at the top.

“We have to try and get a bit of momentum. We are back at Ravenhill, the crowd will be out in force, and there has been a lot of talk of where we are at present, and the players are loving it.

“But we need to win the game at home and that will lead us – with a positive frame of mind – into Europe. But first things first.

“Last week, even in defeat, we had more players putting their hands up wanting to be in the squad, so I just hope we get it together and produce a good performance.

“The two games following – against Glasgow and Castres in Europe – are also massive and there will be chances for people to claim a place.”

We look at all the Round 13 action!

Knock by Leinster and a good run out by Sep Visser, Edinburgh kick over the top by Francis and touchline just beats Fife who may have gone over to score if he could have caught hold of that

  • 32

62nd minute – Rob Kearney off now for Leinster, also Jacobsen being replaced by Hislop for Edinburgh

  • 33

Great run off that line out by O’Brien who takes play from deep in Leinster 22 to over the 10m line but Edinburgh steal the ball and get lineout

  • 34

Madigab on for Fitzgeraland and Bent on for Ross for Leinster

  • 35

Nice direct run by Francis and nicely through the hands by Scott, Edinburgh about 10m out

  • 36

Yellow card for Heaslip and penalty right in front but Edinburgh go for touch too far behind now to go for posts

  • 37

Looks like Heaslip was pinged for playing ball on ground with Edinburgh in strong attacjing position

  • 38

Edinurgh gain nothing from lineout close to Leinster line and now defending desparately in their own 22

  • 39

Madigan scores for Leinster just left of left hand upright, converted by Sexton Edinburgh 9 – Leinster 31 – 69th minute – Leinster just too clinical in recycling possesion

  • 40

Full time elsewhere : Ulster 47 – 15 Scarlets, Ospreys 16 – 15 Zebre that must have been a tense one

  • 41

About 70th minute Glasgow 27 – 7 Zebre ; still no 2nd half score for Glasgow

  • 42

Cross kick by Sexton well taken inside his 22 under a lot of pressure by Fife for the mark, Edinburgh on attack but kick possesion away

  • 43

74th minute try by Matawalu for Glasgow, Glasgow 34 – 7 Treviso as Weir also got the conversion over

  • 44

Penalty Edinburgh and they get touch a few metres inside Leinster 22, lets see if they can at least get a consolation score, they opt for short line out and Leinster steal it!

  • 45

Ball is kicke to Fife who makes good ground, OH WOW good hands by Edinburgh and WP NEL SCORES AN AMAZING TRY RUNNING FROM ABOUT THE 10M LINE OF LEINSTER GREAT BURST OF SPEED FROM THE BIG MAN!!!

  • 46

76TH MINUTE, Conversion is good Edinburgh 16 – 31 Leinster, will have to try get this try by WP Nel somewhere on a highlights package to show you all 🙂

  • 47

77th minute – and Nel is rewarded by being replaced with Cross on in his place

  • 48

Attendence – 3831 I think is what I saw on screen

  • 49

Penalty Edinburgh, Leinster offside, lineout for them about 10m out

  • 50

Nice move by backs almost went wrong, Edinburgh still have possesion

  • 51

Edinburgh are penalized 6m out and Leinster kick for touch

  • 52

That throw in looked so skew but ref was right there and let it go

  • 53

Edinburgh 16 – 31 Leinster final score as Leinster end it all by hoofing the ball way into the stands, well played Leinster just far too good for Edinburgh, but also some glimpses of good play by Edinburgh too, man of the match I think was Sean O’Brian, but the moment of the match has to be WP Nel’s try, am sure he will be talking about that one for year’s to come

  • 54

Ahh just seen the Nel try replay now, he even threw a dummy and then after that still had to get past at least another 3 players from the angle they showed it

  • 55

Final score – Glasgow 41 – Treviso , a 77th minute try by Hogg for his brace, converted by Weir.

  • 56

So thats a good bonus point win away from home by Leinster with a penalty try and further tries by D’Arcy, Sexton and Madigan. Leinster just seemed to be more physical and played the game at greater pace and recyled well making fewer mistakes than Edinburgh, good night all

  • 57

More news from Ulster/Scarlets game: Ulster got 5 tries, one of which was a penalty try and another by former WP man Robbie Diack. Ruan Pienaar contributed 16 points with the boot. Not good news for Scarlets and Wales – George North was stretchered off after apparently getting a knee on his head – sounds like he has head and neck problems and there is some concern about his availability now for Wales in 6 nations. Its never nice to hear about injuries like this all the best to North hope he recovers soon.
