Lions 51 (20) / (3) 13 Russia (Final Score)
The Lions and Russian Bears did battle in the first game of the MTN Lions Challenge at Ellis Park, Johannesburg at 19:00 SA Time.
This was the live match discussion Article.
The match was broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 1, SHD4 & CSN on TV in SA.
The Lions proved to be too strong for a game Russia side who never stopped trying. The Lions ran in 5 tries, and were awarded a further 2 penalty tries on a cold and damp Highveld evening.. The Lions still have a way to go before any possible promotion / relegation games for Super Rugby 2014, but after a display like this to build on, coach Johan Ackermann will feel they have started on the right path.

102 @ Scrumdown:
Yes I had read that about JC. I still wonder if he should have gone on ‘Loan’ as that would all it would be just to play Super Rugby and also Coetzee. Then again this tourney that Lions are playing will keep them in the eye of the Bok coach which they want more to see than anything else.
Rhodes was okay at the Sharks but you right he was very good at Lions then again he has plenty injuries so one never sees enough of him. I always felt for Cilliers, he was very, very good, but had to sit behind on the bench to a even better loosehead at the Sharks ‘Beast’ which is one of my favourite players as he is withe many Sharks Supporter, but always thought Cilliers was a top class player that should have had more game time. He never at the Sharks and did at the Lions. I think he went to Stormers to play Super Rugby than anything else. He would not have left the Lions had they stayed in Super Rugby imo. Cilliers was always class, we knew it here at the Sharks, just that we had a even better player playing ahead of him in Beast. 😉
116 @ Scrumdown,
Thanks for the heads up. I have Caylib and Nyakane pencilled in as the looseheads for the final squad. Coenie takes the one TH spot, just not sure who is staking the strongest claim between de Klerk and adriaanse.
If the game had to end now, my Bru would be spot-on
126 @ Just For Kicks:
Lions scrum monstering the Ruskies now.
Flip. No 24 already on for the Lions. Who is it?
25 coming on. Could be Tecklenburg returning. Indeed.
Ah 24 is Claude Tshibidi.
Impressive Lions scrumming…. but how does one measure their real relative strenght at this juncture.
Is the Russia scrum that bad, or is the Lions scrum that good?
Attacking line out. 12m out for the Lions.
TRY Hendrik Roodt.
Try Hendrik Roodt
Lions 34 / 13 Russia
Try Lions. Lions just too good.
Lions vark up the kick receive AGAIN!
Penalty Russia, obstruction at the kick-off receipt point
Vattikakkikov doing well
Lions defence holds and they turn it over, kick down field and win the penalty.
Marnitz Boshoff now on at Flyhalf for the Lions
142 @ grootblousmile:
That name is a ‘mouth full’ hahahahahahaha….
Now Russia’s defence turns it over.
145 @ Puma:
I’m having great fun with these surnames… hehehe
Lions make wholesale changes.
Try Tecklenburg.
Try Warwick Tecklenburg, under the sticks
