Lions 51 (20) / (3) 13 Russia (Final Score)
The Lions and Russian Bears did battle in the first game of the MTN Lions Challenge at Ellis Park, Johannesburg at 19:00 SA Time.
This was the live match discussion Article.
The match was broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 1, SHD4 & CSN on TV in SA.
The Lions proved to be too strong for a game Russia side who never stopped trying. The Lions ran in 5 tries, and were awarded a further 2 penalty tries on a cold and damp Highveld evening.. The Lions still have a way to go before any possible promotion / relegation games for Super Rugby 2014, but after a display like this to build on, coach Johan Ackermann will feel they have started on the right path.

Well, I recon it’s going to be open floodgates in the last quarter… Lions to canter to a comfortable win tonight
Vodka & Lemoenetyd for the Ruskies… hehehe
Seems just too easy for Lions, well much as I expected.
One has to wonder how JC Van Rensburg and Coetzee their fullback was not lured to any of the other franchises is SA for S15. They both world class.
Bugger, at this rate my Superbru is about to get blown out of the park (excuse the pun)
92 @ grootblousmile:
Hehehehehehehe. Sounds different hey! Not for me though, but you can bring on a red wine that will be good.
Goalless draw between Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde… goeie jinne
94 @ Cheetah4eva:
Mine as well… hehehe. Think it has already… 😯
i still hate a yellow card
it changes the game too much
95 @ Puma:
Vodka & Orange Juice is spectacular stuff!
It’s called a “screwdriver”
96 @ grootblousmile:
Not great really, our soccer team is in the ‘Doldrums’ they are terrible at the moment. Sad actually, as wanted to see them a force after 2010. Just not to be.
93 @ Puma,
In Coetzee’s case, I reckon it’s a case of too much talent at FB. Sharks have Ludik, Viljoen and Gouws (also a promising player). Cheetahs have Le Roux, Daniller, Scheepers, and Smit. Stormers have Aplon, Pietersen and Taute. Kings could do with him, but who the faaark would want to play for them?
JC is a loosehead? The Sharks could do with a back up to Beast. Cheetahs have Caylib, and Nyakane.
93 @ Puma:
JC showed commitment and refused to entertain any offers.
He said that when he was a “nobody”, the Lions took himin and gave him achance and for that he is eternally grateful and said he will stay and repay what he owes.
A rare trait in this day and age.
Thinking about it, Pat Cilliers and Michael Rhodes were nobody’s as well, but they showed the “true” sportsmen attitude and fukced off as soon as they’d made a name for themselves.
I hope they spent the 30 pieces of silver wisely!
2 Nd Half ON!
101 @ Cheetah4eva:
Caylib is a Loose head.
2nd half on.
104 @ Scrumdown:
TIGHT HEAD!
Penalty Russia… should be an easy shot at goal.
Tecklenburg bleeding for his new Union
Penalty Russia in front.
Yanyushkin for poles. Over.
20/6 Lions.
104 @ Scrumdown,
Jip I know, I thought JC was too? How highly do you rate Caylib? Is he as good as Marcel vd Merwe?
Very few sportsmen have that nowadays. Cheetahs had a few diehards. os, Juan Smith, Andre Venter (legend) and Helgard Muller. Muller is still involved with cheetahs rugby if I am not mistaken.

@ grootblousmile:
Hosts South Africa and Cape Verde Islands drew 0-0 at Soccer City stadium Saturday in a lacklustre opening match of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Outsiders Cape Verde were often the quicker and slicker side and midfielder Platini wasted the best chance of the match when he fired wide with only goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune to beat during the first half.
99 @ grootblousmile:
Oh crikey no man boet, I hate that…hehehe. Horrible just horrible stuff…. I have to educate you which is the best party drink boeta… hahahahaha. Absolute HATE vodka actually any spirit drink, don’t like any of it really. Wine for me or windhoek lager or a cider or when I am in Scotland love the lager there. I never drink spirits of any kind, just don’t like the stuff. Wine is my favourite drink, then a good beer or even cider before spirits. Would even have a good Port before a vodka… lol.
Not much happening in midfield for the Lions, Vorster is average
Lions tap the penalty. Another yellow?
113 @ Scrumdown:
Yup.
Russian No 2 cops a Yellow
108 @ Cheetah4eva:
A VERY GOOD prospect. Strong scrummager. Still young. He’ll learn a lot with Os.
Lions scrum taking control now. Could be a long 2nd half for the Ruskies.
Penalty try no 2 from the scrum.
Penalty try again… what else against a 6-man scrum
Lions 27 / 6 Russia
