Lions 51 (20) / (3) 13 Russia (Final Score)
The Lions and Russian Bears did battle in the first game of the MTN Lions Challenge at Ellis Park, Johannesburg at 19:00 SA Time.
This was the live match discussion Article.
The match was broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 1, SHD4 & CSN on TV in SA.
The Lions proved to be too strong for a game Russia side who never stopped trying. The Lions ran in 5 tries, and were awarded a further 2 penalty tries on a cold and damp Highveld evening.. The Lions still have a way to go before any possible promotion / relegation games for Super Rugby 2014, but after a display like this to build on, coach Johan Ackermann will feel they have started on the right path.

Quite a bunch of Russian supporters behind me getting VERY vocal.
Hell, I hope the Lions survive financially this season, hope they get good weather and good crowds in future
27 @ grootblousmile:
That is to be expected gbs, some supporters are hurting boet, also bad weather as well. See some of the box stands are full, so that is good. As the season goes I am sure more will come to the ground.
Go Lions!
Penalty Russia.
Kickable but they go for the corner.
Penalty Ruskies… and they don’t go for goal…. brave
Penalty to the Lions ON their own goal line
Penalty Lions. Showing defensive resolve.
Kokkerotski played the ball in the ruck…. hehehe
Just saw this on Fb, and thought it quite apt to share, since the muppets in our government are beginning with their quota shit in cricket.
LONDON TIMES – QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Interesting point of view Affirmative Action: “South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is in the favour of the majority who has complete political control. The fact that the political majority requires affirmative action to protect them against a 9% minority group is testament to a complete failure on their part to build their own wealth making structures, such that their only solution is to take it from others.”
…
Finally, a word recently coined to describe South Africa’s current political situation.
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) – a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
Skew throw in.
Lions old problems still there?
Good break-through by the Ruskie No 10
That was n great Break, almost trouble
43 @ Cheetah4eva:
Bwahahaha. Fell off my chair.
Sad but true!
11 Phases by the Ruskies… all comes to naught
Russians holding on.
Penalty Lions. Well cleared 8m into Russian territory.
Snotbeladze has a problem with his nose…. sorry could not help myself
Quite a few of the Ruskie World Cup squad of 2011 playing tonight
Lions looking more well-rounded and coached… more structure and finesse
Russian blood sub. Hooker off.
47 @ Scrumdown,
True that brother, it is a shocking indictment against our govt, that this gets written in a foreign press, not that it would bother those galoots, 95% would fail to comprehend the text anyway.
52 @ grootblousmile:
Was gonna say the same, then Cronje knocked it on!
Good Lions scrum and they get the turnover scrum
Lions throw it away!
Lionel Cronje throws a wild pass inside… and the Russians get possession
Try Deon Helberg!
TRY LIONS. Deon Helberg
43 @ Cheetah4eva:
Like your smiley, it is a crying shame! Against 9% well I never?
