Lions 51 (20) / (3) 13 Russia (Final Score)
The Lions and Russian Bears did battle in the first game of the MTN Lions Challenge at Ellis Park, Johannesburg at 19:00 SA Time.
This was the live match discussion Article.
The match was broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 1, SHD4 & CSN on TV in SA.
The Lions proved to be too strong for a game Russia side who never stopped trying. The Lions ran in 5 tries, and were awarded a further 2 penalty tries on a cold and damp Highveld evening.. The Lions still have a way to go before any possible promotion / relegation games for Super Rugby 2014, but after a display like this to build on, coach Johan Ackermann will feel they have started on the right path.

Try given…
Lions 51 / 13 Russia
And a commie sees red, very apt!
Final Score: MTN Lions 51 / 13 Russia
Great to hear some Russian support.
Halftime score was 20 / 3, right?
Well very happy to see some rugga again, looking forward to the S15 season in earnest now.
Cheers for now, nice to spend some time with the lads again, catch up soon
Good points & bad points….
Lions scrums were great, their organisation was better….
Bad points, well they still lacked some cohesion and some okes did not manage to step up to the plate… Vorster, Lionel Cronje (apart from kicking to posts).
Some players showed that they are ready for bigger… Hanekom, Tecklenburg, JC Janse van rensburg, Franco Mostert, Andries Coetzee….
Scrumdown, you finished with the Edit Thread?
Well that’s that for the first hurdle. Next week the Cheetahs visit. I reckon there will be more than a little needle after the SR vote.
So, final synopsis, anybody?
189 @ grootblousmile:
Yup.
Out of it now.
190 @ Scrumdown:
OK, for some quality opposition for a change…. recon the Cheetahs will be too strong…. but hey, the Lions will not lack motivation
Lions have lost too many of their real Super Rugby quality players…. but guts and passion can do strange things, so the Cheetahs better be prepared well!
191 @ grootblousmile:
Youngsters need to grow, and I’m not sure that the quality of opposition through the year will allow them to get to SR level.
I guess we’ll see when we play the Sharks and Stormers during the June test window. Problem is those will be weakened by National call ups.
I guess a first off win is OK. Let’s see how they play agaianst the Cheetahs next week, and the Bulls the week after.
194 @ grootblousmile:
This one competetive game may just tip the scale in the Lions balance for next week. Cheetahs will be rusty.
Hope conditions are ok for an entertaining game.
Right, time to shut down and hit the highway.
Think I’ll go and watch some Heineken.
SA Soccer and Cricket was a dissapointment today.
Right, GBS’s 200 up.
Time to go.
Cheers all.
198 @ Scrumdown:
Just have a quick look how I’ve changed the Article… halftime scores in, and how I’ve done the scoring bits…
200 @ Scrumdown:
Cheers… and thanks!
