Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers will make his Varsity Shield debut when his FNB UWC side take on the FNB TUT Vikings in Bellville on Monday. Two games will be Televised on Supersport.
- 16:30 – 18:45 SS1 FNB Varsity Shield – University Of Kwazulu-Natal v University Of Fort Hare
- 18:45 – 21:00 SS1 FNB Varsity Shield – University Of The Western Cape v Tshwane University Of Technology
The home side, with the backing of a partisan crowd, will be looking to give new coach De Villiers a winning start to their campaign.
Recently relegated TUT, also under new managment, are going to have to front up as UWC will be wanting to prove a point against the former Varsity Cup side.
De Villiers told varsitycup.co.za: “To me it is a challenge to do what I want there. The biggest challenge for me is to get the best out of the players, it is a different breed of players, a different challenge but it is still the same thing.”
The influence of the former Springbok coach will provide the home side with much-needed inspiration for their clash on Monday.
Former UCT second rower Pallo Manual who has moved to UWC will be making his debut against TUT. His experience in the Cup will be invaluable for the side this season especially coming up against a former Cup side.
The Cape side have managed to retain the bulk of their squad from last season which will be vital in the improving on their third-place position they obtained last season.

The FNB NMMU Madibaz went down to the Southern Kings Super Rugby squad 12-28 in a hard-fought training warm-up match on Tuesday.
The Kings came out all guns blazing and put the Madibaz under a lot of pressure in the first 30 minutes, with NMMU trailing 0-21 after three tries from the Super Rugby outfit.
The Kings’ try-scorers were Springbok centre Andries Strauss, exciting young wing Sergeal Peterson and Wimpie van der Walt, each scoring a try in the first two quarters, with Cornel du Preez adding a fourth late in the game.
Flyhalf George Whitehead kicked three solid conversions before making way for Wesley Dunlop in the second half, who added the final two points for the Kings after Du Preez’s try.
The Kings obtained a lot of very good ball from their set-piece and got a large amount of momentum with quick ruck ball, putting them on the front foot.
The Madibaz settled as the game wore on and fought back valiantly in the last 50 minutes of the match to bring the scoreline down to 12-21, attacking with more confidence in the second 40 minutes.
Brendon Olivier and Yamkela Ngam both got over the tryline for the Madibaz, while Bradley Kretzmann managed to convert one try with a solid kick.
Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons said the match had provided his team with a good base point that they could work from.
“The first forty minutes were a bit frenetic at times and there were three or four cold tries that we didn’t finish off, but overall the performance was good,” he said.
“In the third quarter, however we made too many mistakes; we lost possession in two attacking line-outs and our breakdowns need work,” he said.
Solomons said the NMMU team had done well and had provided the Southern Kings with a physical match.
“Remember, this is our first match, compared to their third and final match before taking part in the Varsity Cup next week,” he said.
All in all a good training match for both the Kings and the Madibaz that will stand them in good stead before their respective competitions commence.
The Madibaz will take a lot of confidence out of this game as they look to put the pieces of the puzzle together in the coming week to ensure they produce the right end product before they take on the FNB UCT Ikeys on Monday, February 4 in Cape Town.
The scorers:
For FNB NMMU Madibaz:

For the Southern Kings:

The FNB UKZN Impi showed great character in the driving rain to record a 19-7 victory over the FNB Fort Hare Blues in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.
Last year’s Varsity Shield Wooden Spoonists got their season off to a positive start by negotiating the sopping weather well and holding off a committed Fort Hare side at the Peter Booysens Sports Park.
The Eastern Cape side stayed in the contest right until the final 20 minutes when the Impi pulled away with a try and three penalties to secure their first Varsity Shield win since 2011.
The home side grabbed the early initiative in the difficult conditions by keeping things tight and close to the forward pack, which resulted in the opening try when fullback Jeandre Small was forced over the tryline by a mass of bodies to make it 8-0.
Fort Hare responded by sending the ball wide, and although handling proved more than tricky in the wet conditions they kept the pressure on and opened their account when flyhalf Oliver Zono slotted a penalty.
The visitors had the wind at their backs in the first half and it showed as they spent plenty of time in UKZN’s territory, forcing the home side onto the back foot.
That dominance paid off when fullback Khanyiso Komani sliced through the Impi’s defensive line and released Zono, who pinned his ears back to score an impressive try in the left corner.
The flyhalf could not convert his own five-pointer from the touchline, but Fort Hare were right back in the contest, with the Impi taking a slender 8-7 lead into the half-time break.
Both teams were struggling for continuity in the slippery conditions so the second half saw plenty of kicking as the battle for territory became the focus.
A combination of limited opportunities for both teams and some committed defensive work saw no change to the half-time score at the hour mark, leaving the game open for the taking in the final quarter.
The Impi showed plenty of intent after the final strategy break and sent the ball wide where replacement lock Gerrit Fourie popped up on the wing before beating the last defender to go over for a crucial try which stretched the home team’s lead to 13-7.
Fort Hare fell off the pace towards the end of the match and three penalties from replacement Jaco Potgieter put the Impi firmly in control at 19-7, and they held that advantage until the final whistle.
The scorers:
For FNB UKZN:
Tries: Small, Fourie
Con: Meyer
Pens: Potgieter 3
For FNB UFH:
Try: Zono
Pen: Zono

Former Bok coach Peter de Villiers making a big difference at UWC. Good defensive lines, spacial awareness & physical commitment
What a turn up for the books the second game was.
I don’t think that TUT knew what hit them.
The coaching of Div certainly seemed to have an impact on the UWC lads and they showed some true grit in the first half, and some true flair in the second.
They will have to work on the discipline in the future though.
Does Divvy actually coach the team this time?
