The HSBC Sevens World Series was in South Africa this weekend, with the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens tournament, the last Sevens tournament on the circuit for 2012.
New Zealand took the spoils after beating the South African Blitzbokke 12 / 5 in the Semi-final and thumping France 47 / 12 in the Final.
It was a better weekend for the men from South Africa though, getting through the pool stages unbeaten, also winning the Quarter final against the USA, but then stumbling against New Zealand, by only 7 points. South Africa demolished Argentina in the 3rd Place play-off, beating them by 35 / 0.
Pools:
Pool A: South Africa, Samoa, France, and Australia
Pool B: New Zealand, Fiji, Scotland and England
Pool C: Kenya, Wales, Argentina and Spain
Pool D: Portugal, Canada, the United States and Zimbabwe

Did anyone watch the Ulster game? Well did you notice how superb Ruan played there? Getting the ball out fast and good crisp passes. And the passes were not always going to a forward either. Now I remember that Ruan playing in our Bok game against England in the first test here. He played that style. In the RC and eoyt he was playing terrible. Why? It surely then has to be the game plan he has to play at the Boks. Well that is how I saw it.
331 @ Puma:
Ruan is a big fishy in a small pond, but not such a big fishy in a big pond.
THAT is Club Rugby, not Provincial Rugby and not Super Rugby… and definately not Test Rugby.
332 @ grootblousmile:
Well tell me why he played so well for Boks against England in the first and 2nd test here? Because he did, then his whole style changed. It has to do with the game plan boeta.
Samoa 14 / 5 Australia

333 @ Puma:
He played OK, not great, in those first few Tests… nothing special whatsoever.
Ruan Pienaar came on as a replacement in ALL 3 England Tests in June
335 @ grootblousmile:
I watched those games again a few weeks back, he was far better than in the RC or eoyt. Anyhow I still think we have some good youngsters coming through. Reinach and Groom. Though they need to play their natural style to play to their best. Think come the tours next June we will see some experimenting with our syle of play. We have too otherwise we will be left behind I am sure of that. Those tests are ideal to try out something new. Only of course against Samoa we will probably stick to our tired and tested game plan. Against a under strength Scotland and even a full strength Italy we should be try to bring something extra to our game plan. I feel we will.
Australia 26 / 14 Samoa
Final Score
Australia wins the Bowl
Wales vs Fiji in the Plate Final now on
Jano Vermaak, Sarel Pretorius, Cobus Reinach, Nic Groom & Schroeder… all better than Ruan Pienaar (and Francois Hougaard for that matter) at present.
Will be interesting to see how all of them go in Super Rugby.
