Australia and the South African Proteas do battle in the 2nd Test of the Series in Australia at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.
The game takes place mostly in the middle of the night for South Africans, so live updates will not be given accross the board, but updates will be done in the mornings.
On a belter pitch, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. After a massive start by Australia with the bat on Day 1, hitting close to 500 runs, South Africa was always going to be on the back foot. A super fight back followed by South Africa and on Day 5 of the Test South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers still had a mountain to climb to save the match with South Africa on 77 / 4, still 355 runs short and only 6 wickets in hand. Each batsman pitched in, dug deep, and Faf du Plessis (playing in his maiden Test) held out right until the end, seeing 4 wickets fall around him.
The match ended in a draw, well saved by South Africa.
Australia: 550 All Out & 267 / 8 Declared (70 overs)
South Africa: 388 All Out & 248 / 8 (148 overs)

protea’s 133/0
Smith 65no and Petersen 54no
Really good to see MOrne bowling with a lot more dissapline this morning, and it paid high rewards.
Also this was good for our team with so many injuries, now the bowlers have some time to get treatment and sought out stiff ham strings like Steyn has.
First wicket falls to a goddam run out, Petersen runs himself out, shocking, why the hell we always give the Aussies cheap wickets
sharky @ 33
add to that amla’s brain explosion and both wickets to fall was gift-wrapped. (couldve been worse though, gsmith could also have been out)
..
good news is gsmith just went to his century. am i correct in saying that we’ve NEVER lost a game in which he made a century? (in fact, i’m quite sure that we’ve won a huge amount of those games)
..
anyway, i think tomorrow will be the defining day of this test. batting conditions still good, but according to those who know, the character of the pitch is due to change dramatically from day 4 onwards. if we can bat out the whole of tomorrow (even at the current rate), i’m sure we’d be in a very good position come day 4.
Good Morning Asbakkie,
Yes agreed i just said as much to Pat Simmo on twitter, I get nervous with our running between the wickets too, lots of hesitation.
Smith batting ok, but he also like you say been very lucky
We need to bat right through tomorrow, we really need a lead on this wicket, lots of turn out there for the spinners
As far as I know, you are correct Ashley, we have never lost a test where Smith made a century.
I didnt watch todays first couple of sessions, just too damn early in the morning, but this is a weird game, after yesterday, I was sure Aus would get about 650, but a sort of mini collapse instead.
I reckon the main thing for us today is to occupy the crease, never mind the run rate, just bat out the day, and tomorrow.
One thing that does bug me is a run out in test matches. In 20-20, fine, take a chance every run is vital, but in a test match there is no rush, and no top order wicket is worth taking a chance that at best will only reward you with one run.
peter j, sharky
should we bat out tomorrow, and hopefully still have a few wickets in hand, we should be in the lead by then
and
can hopefully ensure that by the time the aussies bat again we’re the only team with a chance to win this game!!
but
until then, theres still a lot of work to be done!!
Article’s Score sheets updated as at Stumps of Day 2
So ‘n massiewe 172 lopies agter.
45: 162 lopies agter
I think we are in big trouble here, off to gym now, but I will check where we are a bit later. Unless our bowlers can perform some kind of miracle I think we are going to lose this one. I am still dubious about AB keeping wicket, his batting seems to have suffered, and especially after taking all the strain of that long Aussie innings. Rather let him be a specialist batsman.
Oh nooo Tahir got Cowan caught BUT it was ruled to be off a no ball!
2 quick wixkets for Rory,
Wickets becoming very difficult to bat on
47 @ Peter J:
Yes don’t know why he is keeping Peter J, sounds like he might not be keeping anymore after this series, some of us said he shouldn’t be keeper right when he took over so why couldn’t the real pro’s who select the team, and should know far more than us, see that it would be a mistake to make AB keep wicket?
49 @ Sharks_forever:
Helloooo Sharky thanks for that those wickets fell while I was typing my previous comment, good stuf, hopefully at the very least it will slow the Aussie scoring rate so they declare that little bit later to give us less time to bat out for the draw.
Looks like its going to be very wet at Twickenham this afternoon, so won’t be easy for them to play an expansive game. Also rain for Cardiff for Wales/All Blacks game – wonder if they will leave the roof open to try and make it a little less hard against the All Blacks. BUT nothing of the sort for the Scotland/Tonga game should be lovely and dry maybe a bit chilly though especially once the sun goes down which should be by 2nd half, mmmm kilt or trousers?
Aus 80/2 – leading by 242 runs
Another wicket for Kleinveldt, Aus 91/3
Good morning BS mate, and a pleasure lol, now our blowlers are fighting back some
we need to break their back gere though, we need clarke very quickly
That last wicket has Steyn fired up, Steyn needs to let rip at this Siddle clown,
We need to really close them down here, we cannot have them suddenly making fast runs
NO aggression from Steyn when bowling at Siddle,
Lyk my dit help as ek so bietjie raas, Steyn kry vir Ponting.
