Australia and the South African Proteas do battle in the 2nd Test of the Series in Australia at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.
The game takes place mostly in the middle of the night for South Africans, so live updates will not be given accross the board, but updates will be done in the mornings.
On a belter pitch, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. After a massive start by Australia with the bat on Day 1, hitting close to 500 runs, South Africa was always going to be on the back foot. A super fight back followed by South Africa and on Day 5 of the Test South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers still had a mountain to climb to save the match with South Africa on 77 / 4, still 355 runs short and only 6 wickets in hand. Each batsman pitched in, dug deep, and Faf du Plessis (playing in his maiden Test) held out right until the end, seeing 4 wickets fall around him.
The match ended in a draw, well saved by South Africa.
Australia: 550 All Out & 267 / 8 Declared (70 overs)
South Africa: 388 All Out & 248 / 8 (148 overs)

Phweeeew… die Ama-Blomme het geboul soos VERLEPTE PAPAWERS vandag!
Aaargh, we are getting hammered, at this rate, Aussie will put up about 650 then declare tomorrow late, and give themselves over 3 days to bowl us out twice. If they do put up a massive score like that, we cannot win, best we can do is draw.
2 @ Peter J:
At this rate the Aussies will reach 650 well before lunch on day 2!
Damn, you are right gbs, I just noticed the run rate is more than 5 per over, for test match that is incredible. OK, just dropped in for a quick check, now back to work again Will drop in again later.
Eina this is not looking good, heard a saying recently that applies to this game I think; “You don’t neccesarily win a game on day 1 but you can lose it on day 1” – going to be an uphill struggle from here, come on Proteas!
I note the mention of it being a flat wicket made for batting, guess that was the Aussies answer to our normally very good bowling attack ie. prepare a wicket that won’t offer the quicks any assistance and then its down to the luck of the toss if you get to bat first pile on the runs, so often have seen one team able to score loads of runs and then the other team come in and struggle to bat on that very same pitch – am guessing its down to the pressure created by the team batting first putting up a big total. The 1st test in current series between England and India is a prime example of this.
@ Peter J:
@ grootblousmile:
When I saw the score this morning these were just about my thoughts, although I was thinking that Aus could get to around 600 and declare not long after lunch tomorrow. Am sure wickets will fall in the morning on the 2nd day and slow the scoring rate a bit, hopefully there are a pile of wickets and Aus don’t even get another hundred…but thats probably wishful thinking
guys, think the best chance australia have of bowling us out twice is to declare by lunch or just before tea tomorrow.
think both captains wouldve opted to bat first had they won the toss which shouls serve as a good indication that this is a batting pitch. thing i picked up from this first day was that the “sweeper” hardly ever managed to cut off boundaries. now, either he was way out of position (think the commentators wouldve picked up on that) or its a good indication of:
1. how good this pitch and outfield are
and
2. how small this ground actually is!!
..
anyway, tomorrow is another day!! lets see what happens when we bat. would give a much better indication of where this test match is headed!!
..
go amablommetjie-blommetjie-blommetjies …. moer hulle!!!
yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa!!
bullscot @ 6
agree
Hats off though to Michael Clarke thats tremendous batting to get double hundreds in consecutive tests and also now is the 1st man to get four double hundreds in a calender year, this to overtake non other than Donald Bradman who got three double hundreds way back in 1930!
8 @ ashley:
Hi ya Ash how you doing man? Yes you’re right we should maybe just wait and see how tomorrow goes when we bat, but to be honest if I was a regular betting man I would not be going out now and putting anything on a win for South Africa.
bullscot @ 11
hey bullscot, fine thanks
anyway, i might be inclined to do otherwise … must be something to do with being a stormers/wp supporter … the next year syndrome kept us positive no matter how bad we did, lol
#12
o sh*t, just realised, we won the currycup in the year i gave them no chance and were quite negative around a few things in the camp (toetie coetzee included)
….
so maybe i should just write off the ama-blomme?
bullscot @ 10
yes, he’s propably in the form of his life
thing to note though is that all 4 double centuries were at home and in batsman-friendly conditions …. sê maar net!!
another record that may tumble this year
..

@ ashley:
Dagse Kaapseaapseklong 😆
poetry does not come easy 😆
Shoe maar ons word geslag in die kricket.
Maar moet se die kolfblad lyk dood vir n bouler, yes there is bounce and pace, but not much movement at all, so the ball is coming onto the bat beautifully
from cricinfo
…
This is the second time that Australia have scored more than 400 on the first day’s play in Adelaide. The previous time they achieved the feat was against India in 2003-04, when India went on to win by four wickets.
sharky @ 16
how goes?
sharky @ 17
huh?
sharky @ 17
ignore #21
…
my brain just, after you’ve called me kaapse klong for a few times, read exactly that (kaapseklong) and ignore the “aapse” …. had to search through ALL comments before i could find what you were refering to in #17, lol
@ ashley:
I know you caoe tonians are slow, you well boet??,
@ ashley:
Exactly, the wicket seems to be a batting paradise, Who knows what batting 3 or 4th will be like???? I reckon a draw is on the cards
12 @ ashley:
thats good to hear man. Think you may just find many bookies coming running to you if they know you want to put a bob or two on SA winning here. I’m normally so optimistic right till the end of a game but I feel that this one is so stacked against SA now, it would take real character from the Proteas to at least come away with a draw from this one, or many session lost to rain. BUT you should get decent odds in your favour is you went for an SA win and should the unlikely happen you would be a very happy man who could buy us the bears
Flip, I reckon my 10 year old daughter could bowl a more consistent line and length that Rory Kleinveldt!
Aussies gonna win this test EASILY IMO.
bullscot @ 25
if you drink papsak, then you’re welcome
@ ashley:
😆 ash
27 @ ashley:
No thank you ash no papsak for me, if thats what I think it is then used to mix oros with white papsak as a poor student just to get it to taste half good enough to drink
19 @ ashley:
Ha just seen this comment of yours about Aus scoring 400+ on day one of test and losing to India so maybe you could just be smiling as I seen one place’s odds for SA win is 16/1, should I or shouldn’t I?
