Springbok flyhalf Johan Goosen will undergo knee surgery on Tuesday which will rule him out of action for the rest of the year.

rugby365

The 20-year-old playmaker suffered the injury in a collision during the match against the All Blacks at Soccer City on Saturday, and after consulting specialists it has been decided that he requires surgery.

The young flyhalf who only recently returned from a shoulder injury and was hampered in the home Rugby Championship Tests against Australia and New Zealand with a bruised heel, limped off the field just before half-time with what has been confirmed as a Grade 3 medial tear.

This means that Goosen will not be going on the Springboks’ year-end tour to Europe, and his chances of being fit for the start of the Super Rugby season next year also appear quite slim as he may have to spend up to six months on the sideline.

The injury opens the door for Morne Steyn to make a return to the Springbok team when they tour the UK, although there are many who believe that promising young players such as Elton Jantjies and Pat Lambie should be given an opportunity in the No.10 jersey instead.

The fact that Goosen picked up two serious injuries in his debut season will be cause for concern over his future, especially as he has been touted as the long-term answer for the Boks at flyhalf.

HM see’s Lambulance as a 15, not a 10. So expect Steyn, the Bulls laaitjie and Jantjies to tour as the 10’s.

    Which Bulls laaitie, Loskoppie?

Surely not Louis Fouché, the donkey….

Only 3 matches up North… so there should only be 2 flyhalves… maybe 3 hookers, but only 2 flyhalves

2 @ grootblousmile:Ja the donkey. Seems to be HM’s type of 10. Wink

Really worried about Johan Goosen… this year alone he’s crocked 2 shoulders (2 different ones), one heel and now a knee.

By the time he’s 22 he’ll be on crutches, with his walker aid waiting in the changeroom after the game…. ready to move on to the retirement village!

GBS, I think that a good question to ask is what is going to happen to Houhah?
There are better 9’s than him in Sarel and Jano.
There are better wings than him in JPP, Basson and Ruhle.
Is his career over because he , like Lambie [perhaps] and Russel, are super players but not better than anyone else?

He has been crap for the Boks at 9 and on the wing.

Houhah, to me is not the right candidate for a Bok starter… but as a utility bench impact player… scrummie or wing, he is a marvelous asset to have

Maybe way to early but he reminds me of that brilliant fast bowler Nfeneko Ngam, that guy was way faster than Ntini, Steyn , Donald …. but somehow he had some bone deficiency , according to some because of malnutrition. Surely Goosen does not have that problem? But he is a bit of a “sick note #2”

I think some youngsters gym too early in life….

They build muscle quickly, have talent but THIS way of muscle buiding might be deficient in the sense that normal hard work, fitness and growth also makes for longlasting strenght whereas gym work sometimes looks impressive but does not have the real strenght of naturally acquired sinew and tissue.

We seem to be getting it more and more with young athletes.

    @ grootblousmile:
Jip, I can write a book about bodybuilding type gym training vs functional training. But Basil will sort Johan Goosen out. Basil is the best in the business when it comes to strength and conditioning.

    @ leon:

So gee my Basil oor Dr Derick enige tyd.

  • 16

sorry nie cristie nie jake 2002 en 2007 @ smallies:

  • 17

    @ superBul:

On the subject of nutrition I saw John Smit play for the Sarracens in Oxford on Sunday, not sure what his training regime consists of, perhaps a wander down the high street to Dunkin Donuts.

It was a bit sad to see him looking so out of condition.
