@ Scrumdown:
I have in the past jokingly intimated that Morne may be Meyer’s unholy, secret love child (with Smiles and Bidibi). Maybe I was closer to the truth than anyone thought
177 @ The_Young_Turk:
I hear what you’re saying, but I believe there are fundamental errors in SA Rugby in general that prevent them ever getting to the top of the ladder and STAYING there.
The arguement has been raging here about this player or that, and that all things considered there would only be 1 or 2, perhaps 3 differences in all of the “armchair” (or mouse) selectors to that chosen by HM.
That said, it points to me that SA Rugby is far off the mark. How can it be fixed?
I thought the mix in the loosies was spot on today, nicely balanced trio.
I thought the locks provided grunt up front and also made our starting props scrum better.
I thought our scrums went well.
Cardinal problems lay at scrumhalf and flyhalf….. and using Langbek and Greyling as subs
181 @ The_Young_Turk:
Hehehe. I can understand perfectly why HM carries on picking Mone Steyn, but why Greyling above Cilliers on the bench?
I can also understand his reluctance to start Goosen against the Aussies or AB’s, if he doesn’t get protection he’ll get varked badly, but a laaitjie like Lambie’s already shown that he can handle the BMT.
Is it blind provincialism, or fear of change from what he (HM) perceives to be a solid (if not match winning) pivot? The fear of change without success if you like.
@ grootblousmile:I wouldn’t
172 @ Just For Kicks:
Deans, Mallett, Plum or Mitchell. Would have the talent we have here winning just about every game. We could become a powerhouse with any of those coaches right now. Doubt they would select wrong either.
@ grootblousmile:
The biggest difference in this match is that our forwards fronted for the entire match instead of in spurts even tho we were playing with many new players and missing old stars like Bissie. Many people predicted before the match that the Boks would front up, as the passion and pride when playing the ABs is in a different league to anything else. Don’t read too much into this match. The Boks were wounded and gave their all against their ancient foe.
186 @ Puma:
Mitchell can’t work with people… sacked in NZ, sacked at the Force, now sacked at the Lions….
… and just how many games did he make the Lions win in Super Rugby?
187 @ The_Young_Turk:
Why should the passion and pride be anything different against the All Blacks than against, say Scotland.
The second you’re selected to play for your country, whether against Namibia, or New Zealand, the passion and pride in the jersey should be the same, as should the commitment on the field.
Maybe that’s part of the problem?
186 @ Puma:
Just one week ago Deans was on the verge of being sacked in Australia, everybody begging for his head to roll.
Wallabies are STILL kak uder him
You have a short memory…. either that or selective amnesia
@ Scrumdown:
You’re right, But I’m not saying that it SHOULD be like that, just that it IS like that.
@ grootblousmile:
All the other coaches have their shortcomings too but maybe they wouldn’t be so provincially biased or so fixated on particular players?
186 @ grootblousmile:
What makes Plum so good?
The fact that he coaches the Sharks?
188 @ grootblousmile:
He never had a full squad of Lions players to work with this year. There was so many injurie to his team to be competitive.
Not sure what went on there but heck he had them playing great rugby last year, that was with no-name players at the time. AND they are carrying on with his game style right now. He would do far more with our players than Meyer. Any of those coaches I mentioned.
Also if a player is soooooooooooooooooo out of from why the heck keep him playing? Morne has been given more chances than ANY other player ever. He has to be DROPPED and not dropped to the bench dropped out of the team. Greyling too must be dropped forever from the Bok team. He was totally useless out there today. Which coach would have taken Beast off for Greyling? WHICH? That was daft really.
190 @ grootblousmile:
But as has been pointed out by many on this forum, the Western Cape has MORE players than the whole of Aus.
I think what our erstwhile knock kneed friend was trying to say is that with the SA talent at their disposal, the coaches he named would be more successful than the current SA incumbent.
Personally I’m not so sure.
Our players are just not good enough. Flashes of brilliance lost in a sea of mediocrity.
When last was SA the top ranked IRB nation, and for how long did they stay there?
190 @ grootblousmile:
Deans does NOT have the depth of talent to work with in Oz like he would have here. He is doing okay with the Aussies. With the talent we have here he would do brilliant. So would Mitch, Mallett and Plum. We could then probably be playing ‘total rugby’ to just the kick and chase game.
Greyling won’t be available for at least a month after that STUPID liberty he tried.
He’ll cop a month ban at least.
@ grootblousmile:
In any case my wish would not be to see the back of HM but to see him be more flexible and open and not so extremely rigid and close minded. We don’t have many good alternatives besides Mallet and the other foreign coaches are far from perfect.
191 @ The_Young_Turk:
Your last line. That is it, spot on. Agree. We should probably have looked outside of SA for a coach.
Cheers all.
I’m going to light a fire and discuss the next CC game with the Captain.
Reen se moer.
193 @ Puma:
He still can’t work with people… not the players (clearly) and not members of the Media (my personal experience where I saw how blunt he is).
Clearly his bosses don’t like him either….
Take the blinkers off, seriously!
I think we should launch a petition that Smiles go and kick some sense into Meyer! Se vir hom hy moet sy kop uit sy gat kry en die walkie talkie ‘n bietjie uitlos.
194 @ Scrumdown:
Under Mallett. We won 16 straight games. We had one the previous game against Oz 62-21 something like that with C. du Plessis. We went on to a 17 streak win. That was our best. Then in 2009 with Divvy we were top of everyone.
At least Divvy won in New Zealand in his first year and the next year again. We should have won this game today, but it was Meyer stubbornness that kept us from winning. He should have replaced Morne and brought on Goosen after 30min or even after the break. We would have won it. This loyalty to Morne is just costing us and have no idea why he is so loyal to a player that has been out of form for almost 2 years.
Bringing on Greyling for Beast was mind boggling. Have no idea why Meyer done that. Greyling cost us huge too.
@ The_Young_Turk:GBS has fallen under the Ostriches evil spell before. It would be unfair to send him in again. Time to send in a super hero on this one. Anyone seen Loosehead?
@ Puma:
That is the great mystery, the persisting with Morne. He has alternatives in Lambie, Jantjies and even Grant but all of them were utterly rejected. He refused to even give them the slightest chance and only Morne was permitted to kick for goal with just Fransie for the odd distance kicks. He has clearly an abysmal opinion of these alternatives and only believes Goosen could one day step into Steyn’s boots. So the Boks winning or losing does’t matter a damn as long as they are doing it with Morne Stain.
200 @ grootblousmile:
Really can’t let a great rugby brain like that go wasted. He is living right here in SA right now and we should use him in some way. I know Meyer said that Mitchell is a very good friend of his. Why not use him in a consultant. Bring him in for a week here and there, to throw ideas about, where we could improve or where he thinks we going wrong. Yes, he is blunt and right now we NEED someone like that who could give Meyer some ideas, he would be very straight for sure. Bring him in as a consultant.
@ Just For Kicks:
True, Smiles does swoon before Meyers big blue eyes, doesn’t he. One can understand how they produced their love child.
206 @ Puma:
Mallett’s a great coach, but he’s burnt his bridges…
208 @ grootblousmile:Only with the big knobs, time for them to swallow some pride too!
205 @ The_Young_Turk:
Well that is really not on. Goosen has to start. He rates Goosen highly so I feel he will start. It is only the players he wants that will start. The treatment of Lambie is terrible. Just leaving him on the bench to cover for injury is crazy. He is pure class and would have been better than Zane at fb. Zane missed the tackle that lead to their last try. I think he is waiting for a player HE wants at fb and then will give that player a start. It can’t be Zane that is for sure, he is probably only using him until the player he wants at fb is fit and ready to play. Otherwise by now he would have selected Lambie if he wanted him to play there. But he has him there to use and he should have used him. Leaving him on the bench for 3 games is shocking. He would have offered more than Zane, much like Goosen would have offered more than Morne.
Bringing on Greyling was a mystery too. He gives some players game time while others just have to hang to dry on the bench. Shocking, as Greyling cost us huge today.
