Springbok flanker Schalk Burger is expected to be ruled out of rugby for the rest of this year’s rugby season after he was injured in the opening round of Super rugby.

Burger played in one match this season but has failed to regain fitness and his coach Allister Coetzee does not expect to see him playing again this season.

“Schalk is still out completely, ” said Coetzee on the Western Province rugby site.

“He had to stop the rehab completely because he wasn’t going any further so he saw a specialist last week and we are just waiting for the report on that.

“There is a possibility that he might have to clean up the whole thing again or the other option would be to just do nothing for a while and then reassess from there.”

“I think he will be out for the year… but that’s without even looking at the specialist’s report.”

This is a pity, what a good player he has been, in his prime one of the best in World rugby. Coming back from that neck injury shows how tough he is but if he has had an operation for this injury and now may need another one then its going to be hard for him to get back to his best. Maybe its time for him to reconsider things and once he is fit again look at coming to Europe to get a couple of seasons in if possible before retiring.
